Nice setup Swanny.  8) Looks like you even have a cooler for your video card. I guess now your going to have to get an FX5900 so you can overclock the hell out of it.  Grin

I keep looking at the Koolance cases but the price is quite steep for a case with now power supply. I think the cheapest I saw was $310CND from TigerDirect.ca. I'm going to wait. With the upcomming release of the Pentium V, liquid cooled systems are sure to come down in price as their popularity rises.

I don't get into this Forum area all that often, as I'm not big into the Hardware scene, but Gees, I really was surprised to see that PCU's are now requiring Liquid cooling to keep them 'at temp'.

I'm a Refrigeration Mechanic by trade (although many years since I worked in the trade). The principals of heat transfer (or dissipation) are the same regardless of what you're wanting to cool or keep cool, and what you're using to do it.

I can't help imagining the horrible consequences of a Glycol leak, though (I presume Green Glycol is the coolant used).  Cry

One of the important governing factors in any 'cooling situation' is the ambient (surrounding) temperature of the item. You can go cutting wholes for ventilation (which can only help, even if only slightly) but if the temperature of the air outside the box is still relatively warm, there will be little benefit,

If anyone was to ask me the single most important factor (apart from the actual temp of the case inside), I would have to advise that keeping the surrounding air in the room (particularly around the PCU itself) as cool as possible. (Even if you have to wear a coat while you work on you Computer.....lol  Grin Wink

5 - 10 degrees difference in ambient temp means 5 - 10 degrees further the the item has to go up in temp. before it 'overheats'.

For what it's worth!!   Grin Grin Wink

P.S. Of course liquid cooling will be far superior to air cooling, however I imagine the Glycol has to be run through a 'coil' of some type for the heat to be removed from it, before being recycled to the PCU. If this is the case, once again it can only be more efficient if the air over the coil (once again the ambient air) is as cool as I can be, within restraints.
In refrigeration, especially outdoors (Frig Vans ect) you have no control; over the ambient temp, but in a room in a house there are windows, air cond or in winter leaving the heat off etc.

liquid is not required. just i do some major stuff on my computer that requires it. I am about to do some overclocking, I just did a tiny bit earlier today. about 200 Mhz difference at the moment.

Without going into too much technical stuff. What is 'Overclocking'?   ??? ???

Hi Bren...!
Overclocking is like when you are too tight to buy a car with a bigger engine, so you supercharge your little Mini and risk destroying it in the process... Wink...!

I read somewhere that liquid cooling systems use either water or a mixture of antifreeze and water.

My current room temperature is 78F due to electrical usage restrictions after last Thursday. It's usually between 68-72 in the winter and 74-78 in the summer.

Commenting on Brensec's Glycol leak statement. I would think any leak in a computer cooling system would be a disaster. Water conducts electricity and electrical short equals fire. I suppose if your cheap like me, you could buy a mini bar fridge and stick you computer in there. That's such a silly idea, it just might work. I'm not going to try it though.

I wonder what they use to cool super computers. I always thought they kept them in refrigerated rooms.

I still hold on to my prediction of liquid computer cooling becomming more common. AMD has already announced the release of it's Athlon 64 and there are rumors of a Pentium V comming soon. I know AMDs run quite hot already and although P4s run cooler, there is still a limit to what conventional aircooling can do in an enclosed area.

Just some thoughts. I never realised how complicated computer cooling was until I started this thread.

The AMD Opteron 1.6 Ghz....500 dollars. Awesome

Super Computers... They are pretty much in a water resistant case so it cant leak, and a special type of non conductive fluid runs throughout the entire case and these things a friggen huge. I am almost sure there is a seperate part for all the RAM and another part for all the CPUs...

And on my liquid cooling it runs through a radiator, which has fans attached from the inside of the case. Gets rid of the heat then goes at the CPU and Graphics card again... Almost forgot, the liquid is part antifreeze part purified water. When I change the liquid, I am going to use Zerex Racing Super Coolant and Purified water. 5% Zerex Racing Super Coolant   to 95% Water then I will add a little bit of UV Reactive die for when I get a UV light and put a window in  8)
