Well i finaly got hooked up to vatsim last night, iv had the game installed for about 24 hour's now so i dont realy get a lot of things and shouldnt realy have flown on vatsim but i couldnt resist Smiley

basicly i caused mayhem LOL but some guy on ATC over (KORD) gave me a helping hand and i started getting to grips with things a little better (a big thanks to that guy)

anyway here are my questions

1.i  logged in first with a lancaster from my addon planes, but all i saw on the server was lancaster's?

am i right in thinking if i use addon plane thats all i see in game??? and can the other guys see my plane as a lancaster (or what ever) or does this mess up the server?

2.COMSSSSSSSSSS!!

im taking all my lessons ingame riht now so im still leaning about all this radio gear, but im a little stupmed on how vatsim does this...

that guy on ATC told me to tune to 133.00 on my com1 radio (all ok we had contact) but what happens when i clear his airspace???? will he inform me of the next guys airspace freq???

"SQWAWK"??? what does this mean actaulay?? is this the transponder??? and am i right in thinking that the transponder makes radar contact with ATC so they can see you?? and does this freq change?

last but not least Smiley im flying out of AP "A" i tune to there ATC roger wilco and all the other radios, when i clear there AS how do i get on the next ATC's RW chann??? , i know how to do it as regards look at the channels in SB but will they update channels near me as i fly from point A to point B??

thank you for ANY! info, i just spent the day going through this learn to fly thing, just getting my head round these radio's Smiley

Best regards

Hey Gizz-

That's very common for VATSIM controllers to be very newbie friendly.  I'll never forget this one controller in Boston who has to be sick of me, but he never hesitates to help me.  It's very nice.  (Sorta like people here at SimV!)

Squawk is exactly what you thought it was.  It lets the folks in the tower see who you are, giving them information other than the blip on their screen.

You should be able to see other planes, and they should be able to see you, provided they've got your plane in their library.  (Someone else can explain why this is...I never understood it.)

To get to the next Radio Frequency, open up SB, or maybe it's RW, I can't remember off hand, and just double click on the one you want to talk to next.

Sorry my answers were so vague...I'm at work (as always) and I can't remember without seeing the screen what everything is.  lol  (Gettin' old.)

I'm thinking Gizz only sees Lancasters is because he didn't install the Common Shapes Library.

But, I've heard that this causes a big slowdown in framerates.
Do you install the CSL, or not. I've got it, but I don't want to use it, until I know for sure.

I believe they will give you the next freq, but if they don't, go ahead and ask 'em for it.  They'll  give it to you if you've got it.

As for the attitude on VATSIM, I agree completely.  They're all VERY professional, and VERY courteous.  I've yet to run into a controller who would even dream of giving me the slightest little bit of attitude because I didn't know something.

That's why we (Hyperion Airways) proudly support VATSIM and all it stands for. Grin

Yes, VATSIM ATC will hand you over to the nect controller when you leave his airspace, PROVIDED there is one on duty to hand you over to. On a recent flight I had, the controller advised that I was leaving his airspace and there was no other contoller to hand me over to and I should resume my own navigation. You had better know where your going, or your gonna feel pretty helpless. He also advised I switch to Unicom, but I didnt know what that was, or how to do it. Eventually I cut the sim in midflight since I didnt know where I was going. In my haste to fly with real ATC, I hadnt properly prepared for the flight, but it was still a lot of fun. Good luck with it.

That one is pretty simple. The game takes textures from your machine instead of sending everything over the internet. All that is really sent over the internet is your position and general info on what type of plane (data not graphics).

If you don't have the texure for that plane then your game uses a default (usually a Cessna) to represent the other player's plane. It has work this way because of the speed and bandwidth limitations. Just think how long it would take on a 56k modem to download all the textures for everyone's planes and it would have to stop and redownload every time someone changed planes or a new player popped into existance.

I've entertained thoughts about how this limitation could be overcome but about the best thing I can come up with is an automatic download with airplane designers creaing a low resolution texture to be used in multiplayer. Only problem here is that it would still take up a lot of bandwidth and drag the game down unless everyone had high speed hook ups and the best textures that could be used would look even worse than seeing a Cessna flash past at Mach 2.

Another VATSIM Q....

If you've taken off from airport A with UNICOM due to no ATC, when should you change frequency to your arrival airport which has ATC?
