It seems like you are confusing an issue here....passage of time since registering on here doesn't automatically mean that you contribute lots .....? a Resident is someone who has shared his/her thoughts with the open forum members, many many times (over 500) and the more you do it, the more you are recognized as a benefit to the community.....sitting and watching for ten years may get you lots of knowledge from the sharing members, but what personal satisfaction do you get from helping others if you don't offer up your knowledge too ?....thats what its about here.....we all share and benefit from the sharing........its a two way street, but you are always most welcome to be a wallflower if you so desire........I see you registered July 2002 and thats fine for you. You may have tons more knowledge than all of us put together, but we'll never know if you don't offer some of it up and share with the rest of us.....
Don't take this the wrong way, as every little bit helps, and if you only post once a week, its one more thing we wouldn't have acquired if you didn't....so thanks for what you bring to us...........

I don't think it's so much a matter of who ranks who as it is one of bragging rights.

Four times a week isn't that much..........Look at Andrew N.P. Esselbach........he posts daily and speaks up on every thread that he has a comment on.....he keeps nothing to himself........there are others on here too, who have interests in many of the forums.....look around and see what grabs you....that fourth star is waiting for you at 251...............

I don't look at it as bragging rights, but I do take pride in knowing a thing or two about aviation which I know not everyone else knows about, so I share it when a particular subject comes up......I think I know a bit about graphics too, but that remains to be seen.......

Of course, then some people split their postings up into 2 or 3 different parts so they get a higher number of postings.

Why does it really matter. I mean, if your contributing to our community-the rank shouldn't matter. I mean I don't treat someone who is a gold member than I treat a resident. All it is is a little yellow star and nothing more. I really don't think that I would call them "ranks" atb all since they really have no signifficance.

I think it's a bad system. It seems like all people want to do is get those five starts, so they start posting nothing but spam and useless posts. Especially posts that consist of "
" or "nice shots". No real valuable feedback, just spam. I just wish you could edit your title once you got to 500. Platinum Playa! That would sound cool.

I think I first 'signed up' around July 2002. the same time as Piper.
The fact that I have have some very lengthy discussions with the likes of Hagar, Hawker, Andrew etc. means that my tally of posts is pretty high (although not as high as some in shorter periods).
For instance, get three or four of us going on the BoB or the Spit versus the Hurricane, and it's worth a good 15-20 posts each by the time we've all exchanged ideas.
Some have said that they are bored with some of the discussions that we have, sometimes the same kind of subject (although to us there are subtle differences). Well, they don't have to even see it, if they don't want to.
I generally only post in General Discussion and Cafe SimV. The rest I only visit, very occasionally.
Some do get there numbers up by spamming, but as I've been 'accused' of being unnecessarily long-winded on many occasions, I dare say that in total words, I would definitely be well up front.................lol
As far as I'm concerned, give what you want, take what you need, and it should all come out in the wash.
Some of us have more time to spend here than others.
Age, school, work, family. health etc all effect how much we can give. So if some one can only pop in occasionally, that's fine, they obviously have something more important to tend to.
But then, if you can't or don't spend as much time here as others, then you aren't going to get the numbers up, if that's what really is important to you...........
To tell you the truth, I don't even know how many I have, right now.................I think it's around 1500......

I always thought this "feature" is the worst part of the Yabb board. I know Pete would remove it if he could. I've always said the number of posts means absolutely nothing, it's the content that counts. For some strange reason the majority of members associate number of posts with wisdom & knowledge. In the FS & Design forums I've spotted some of the people I most admire completely ignored just because they don't visit the forum too often & have one star. You tell me who's missing out.
I've been a member of the old Ultraboard & this forum from day one under various names. I don't particularly like forums & this is the only one I participate in. Until recently, I was on the list of top 15 posters under 2 different aliases. Adding the totals together would put me up there with Andrew & BMan. I take no pride in this whatsoever as it means nothing at all. If anything, it proves I have too much time on my hands. As with any community you have to earn the respect of the others. Because of this forum I've made some good friends & learned a lot. If I can help somebody in return I'm delighted.

I don't really worry about it, I just like to help people, or make them laugh (about half my posts on the way to resident status were in the Jokes Forum
, some of them even made people laugh....
).
I think for most people it doesn't matter, I treat everyone the same whether they're a new member or a hard core resident. If they have a question I can answer I do.
Probably why I ended up being a moderator, I opened my big mouth too often
Its not how much you post, its what you post. Rifleman had to point out to me that I'd broken the 4000 barrier, I hadn't noticed 'cos I didn't care. Maybe when I hit 10000 I'll get a couple of bars of chocolate to celebrate talking too much

My take on things is that it is interesting to know how many post's someone has made but it ultimately means nothing. At this time I have nearly 900 posts. Some of them were helpful, some were silly and some I have to admit should be removed for shear stupidity but they are all from me (except the ones from Sarah before I persuaded her to get her own screen name).
You soon find out who you like to chat with on here and who is a complete moron and that is about compatability not quantity of posts.

No, the number of postings you have makes no difference at all. A person with one posting has just as valid an opinion or is just as capable of giving good or bad advice as a person with 7319 (ahem, no names but his initials are ANDREW N.P. ESSELBACH!). It's just fun. It makes for some funny comments from time to time; nothing is there for people to be really competitive about so just sit back and enjoy it. The whole subject is really a non-issue.

I agree with Ozzy and the others who said that the number of posts really doesn't matter, if I see something here that I feel like commenting on, I post a reply, sometimes I start a thread but not very often.
I just enjoy being a part of this community, I feel like I fit in here and can be myself.
Unless I am missing something, I don't think this is meant to be a race to see who reaches a certain number first, a little friendly rivalry is cool, but in fact, it's a bit childish to post a complaint about who has more stars or a higher number of posts anyways.

As long as we're on the subject of things that are a pain in the neck; you know what's annoying? When people change the subject line of a posting on a reply.
There's nothing like going into your mailbox and finding eight messages with four different titles, all leading to the same posting.

Let's understand one thing - from day one, ANYone can be a "resident" - it's all on how the basic forum is set up.
you can have it set up for 1 post you're a member, 2 posts, you're a jr member, 3 posts.. and 5 posts you're a "resident"....
Going after the 5stars means nothing. You can easily reach that by replying to every post with a "Huh?", "Good post", "Nice" ... etc.
You can be a Jr Member and still be more "productive" than some "Resident"...
I know of one poster who is not even halfway to being a "Resident" but each of his posts are helpful, and to the point.
For example, at the new FFDS Forum, I've started each FFDS Associate as a "resident" (Actually I call them "Hopeless Fanatics") with 500 posts each...

Sorry to be so sarcastic but this is kind of a silly discussion. I've been a member for a while, longer than it says. That's because of the Battle of TITS which I'd rather not bring back up.
The stars don't mean a thing, unless you go nuts like Andrew "Nice Pic" Esselbach. I don't mean to be rude but I bet Andrew would be a great telemarketer.
I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday.

Yes, the stars mean nothing like I am better than you. For me they just show how much I have contributed to the site. I don't care if it was all questions or it took me 10 years it just means how many times I have read something and posted. I don't know. I feel proud of it. It might be wrong but I just find it cool.
I have to disagree with the spam thing. Spam is this:
Get 10 percent off so and so
Saying nice shots keep them coming is called Motivation IMO and not spam. Even saying: Your pictures suck get out of here is not Spam. It is a comment, a part of ones thoughts. and NOT SPAM.

I do not even look at the number of posts..
This place to me is a place that I come to to interact with fellow freinds who have a common interest....aviation.
There are many forums and we each gravitate to what we like. We also gravitate to the "Virtual" freinds we all have. Comments, pictures, suggestions.....and ultimatley.....FUN!,...that's what it all about!!
Of course We all have freinds that go way back and the # of posts represent that. But to me, It is not the # of posts...but the "person" you are here at SimV..
It is funny, I see people with over a thousand posts and never have anything interesting to say, (in my opinion, do not mean to offend),..who seem like they have been here forever!!
Then you have somebody like Brad "AKA X" who only recently joined, and he immediatly has many freinds....!!If you did not see his # of posts, wouldn't you think he was here forever?
Just an observation....
It is all in how you "present" yourself.

Of course, then some people split their postings up into 2 or 3 different parts so they get a higher number of postings.
If this is referrencing me,.....I lile to post shots!!!
I always try to tell a little story to make it interesting for viewers. I think that when somebody tells alittle story, or even shares some info in the graphic posts,..it makes the post more interesting. I think it is better than 5 or 6 pictures "slapped" up there on a blank slate. When somebody takes the time to "express" or "share" in where or how the pictures were taken, it adds a little life to the post!
Since threads are limited to 500k, I see NO problem in starting another thread to "finish" or "tell" a story. The last thing on my mind when posting is trying to "add" to my # of posts....believe me!!! I could really care less!!
Now you all have me looking at the # of posts....shame on all of you
Holy mackeral,
I am almost at 1000!!!!!
If I ever complete my Alaskan Vacation.......I will be most likley be drooling on my keyboard at an "old age home somewhere".........hey but I will have 1,000,000,000,000 posts!!!! LOL

The stars don't mean a thing, unless you go nuts like Andrew "Nice Pic" Esselbach. I don't mean to be rude but I bet Andrew would be a great telemarketer.
I resent that.
Why can't you just accept that fact that i've been here longer then you have? I also spend a considerable amount of time here during the day. Spend 4 hours here everyday and your posts will increase dramatically.
How would you like if nobody ever, and I mean ever commented on screenshots you post? A "Very Nice Shots!" post is appreciated more then nothing.
It seems that my little stars and my post counter does mean something to you or you wouldn't make a big deal out of it. I have already explained that I rarely notice it. Pete could turn it off and I would probably be more happy about it then sad.
If you haven't noticed by now, Simviation is the majority of my social life, 'nuff said!

Funny how we are all trepeating ourselves from the last time this post was started.
I will say to Andrew again, Thank You
I once said in the SAME thread.....:"I would rather see that somebody took the time to respond with a "Nice shots" rather than to see 25 views of something I posted and not one response!"
Keep posting Andrew!!!

Hey,...maybe Pete can change the color of the #'s to pink and blue.......which would make as much sense as the post # itself!!!!!!!!!!

At the speed that alot of our P.C.'s download pages in the 'Screen Shots' forum, you'd have to be crazy to use that particular venue to 'run up your numbers'. It takes ages just to see the pics that you might think about commenting on..........................so I can't see how the critisisms that have been brought up (serious or not) could be aimed at those who make any comments in the Screen shots forum.
P.S. Back to a comment made by someone earlier about them not liking it when thev "subject" section of a post is altered. I'm afraid I must agree. I have received countless 'auto email' responses with subjects that are not listed on the main page.
Again, with the speed that my P.C. runs at, I'm not always able to do a search for a subject just to see if it pertains to something important or that I would like to see. As said by my friend, just a little problem for some people.
Andrew, I've never seen you Spam. So you must spend alot of time in here. I hope it's worth your while, and I'm glad I can at least be here occasionally to help pass the time, constructively with you.
(I did see Stormy Spam once.........................Oh it was really, really, really bad too...........do you know what she did, do yo, well do you.............She made all the posts in the "Raw Screen shots" go out of order, and , and , and......no-one knew what was going and, and , and..........everyone got really, really upset about it, but Rifle stayed out of it because he has to live with her and then, and , and then she got all defencive and told us all to stop being childish and to pull our heads in, and , and , and then.........do you know what happened then, well..............do you?...........Well then, then ..............
I kill me...........if Stormy doesn't get me first.
He runs away.........................................................ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

That has to be the easiest way to run up numbers, LMAO or LOL does not take that long to write after all.
As for these attacks on Andrew, my first few posts on the forum where screen shots, they weren't very good. This is not false modesty, none of my screenshots are very good. Anyway, the only person on the forum who had the time to reply was Andrew. Made me feel like there was some point to my posting them.

When I said this is my social life, I really wasn't kidding. I have managed to make several friends who live locally, but they're all going off to colleges in a couple weeks
I know this is kinda off-topic, but Ken started it
Actually, he mentioned that I don't keep anything to myself. Here in the real world, I tried my best to 'look normal' and to keep my obsessions away from most people, but it didn't work. One of my co-workers thinks my obsession with Aviation is 'silly', and that all my time flying 'stupid' little games is nothing but a waste of time
When I told him about the airshow and all the aircrafts I got to sit in, he thought I was pathetic.
He's obsessed with girls, and when he starts talking, I always break in and start talking about other things. This has annoyed him to no end
He tells me to get a life. What do I tell him?

He sounds like a perfectly normal insecure young man. The one's who shout loudest about girls are usually the least succesful. I get loads of grief at work from colleagues who do not understand the hobby at all, but let's be honest it is the same with most hobbies. I cannot understand the obsession some have with fishing. I just appreciate that they like it and leave it there. I would try and find out if this colleague has any other interests beside girls, whenever he laughs at you for your flight simming draw comparisons to his hobby, even if it doesn't work to keep him quiet it will make you feel better if you can get him back some times.
With the old "get a life" routine, are you happy with your life? If you are the best reply is "Already got one thanks, it's great fun." or something along those lines. If he really bugs you interupt him with something when he is talking to a pretty girl and start talking to her yourself, you have an interest which girls DO appreciate (Kimber, Stormy and Shorty to name just 3) and if he's into nothing but "girls" he'll lose out in the long run.

Yep, as Pete's signature says, beware of the normal person. If this guy is just your typical manly man, it's probably because he's trying to be that way. Insecure is probably his condition. Good diagnosis Dr. Smoky.

simply put, girls are great and all, but lets face it, flying is just so much better:) leads to alot less trouble to

Andrew,
My Mrs can't see how I can get the enjoyment that I do out of simming (or the excitement with which I talk about my hopes with regard to real flying), but she still loves me and we still share other things that we both enjoy. Frankly, I can't see how she enjoys some of the things she does either, but that's what makes us all interesting.
If we were all the same, the world would be a crappy place.
As far as young blokes and hobbies and interests are concerned, there will always be people who have to have a go at those who are interested in things they aren't, or don't understand. It's usually the way they build themselves up, by making others seem small to themselves, or to others, even better, if possible.
If you see this bloke talking to a girl, go up to him, ignoring the presence of the girl, acting as though you're a good friend, then ask him if the 'herpes' have cleared up yet!
Believe me, it works.........and he'll leave you alone for good.

LMAO!!!!!!!!
Actually, he's a coworker that I work with almost everyday, so I really shouldn't make an enemy out of him.
Earlier, he just couldn't stop starring and checking girls out. When I started talking about getting the simulator, he told me to get a life. I then told him to get a life, he was quite suprised, but even though everyone thinks i'm crazy, he's still the one who needs a life
