I had one introduction lesson in Lelystad Holland with Martinair. It were the most beautifull 20 minutes of my life. So I'm gonna take lessons in about a half a year.
In the controls poll someone said that real flying is nothing like F$, but that lesson I took was almost the same, we had strong winds so the movement of the aircraft was different. Flight Simulator is for as far is I know really realistic.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Second got me launching myself bodily out of aeroplanes.
Fun if someone else is paying you too.
Still fun if you have to pay for yourself.

My first excursion was from the rear door of
a C-130, with a very large, very black,[very good man] sargent, yelling "RUN! RUN! RUN!", I was
well away from the AC before I saw the ground,
after that, it's no big deal!!! Grin

Well, my old boss & flying instructor once told me he would never consider jumping from a plane with the correct amount of wings still attached. Some 40 years later I'm still inclined to think he was right. Roll Eyes Tongue

PS. I might make a exception if it was on fire.

I've got about 10 hours on various light aircraft, C172, 152, Piper tomohawk, Jodel etc. I also flew grob Vikings in the ATC. And like Ozzy I willingly fall out of C.206s. Another couple of jumps and I'll be able to start AFF Grin.

1 Hour in a Beechcraft Skipper. MY recent TIF. The bloke let me fly the whole hour, even the landing (with some assistance). All he did was take off and get it to 2000.

Nifty thing, this flying, I really like it. I'll have to try a bigger plane though, the Skipper was way too small for my bod.  Grin Wink

I was going to respond, when I caught BRENSEC'S penguin thing, and just about peed myself. That de-railed my train of thought.              Oh yeah, I fly for a living, but generally the passengers don't like it when you roll inverted and crash the airplane, so I have my real fun when I come home and get on the computer. Cheers mate... Grin...!
The Gipsy engine was installed up-side-down, (so as to afford the pilot a better view from the cockpit, but still didn't help very much 'cos the Austers were tail-draggers), and being up-side-down the oil was able to drain out of every available orifice, (which it did), wether on the ground or up in the air.... Cry...!
Large patches of oil were a trade-mark of Gipsy-engined aeroplanes...I could show you my oily Army overalls, but they've long since rotted away, a bit like the rags on my Austers.... Wink...!

Hi Bren....
...been there, seen it, done it, ever since 1951.... Grin...!
UNTIL...
I bought my first "Japanese" bike in 1984.... Shocked...!
No more oil leaks, break-downs, plastic tyres, magneto's, dynamo's, leaky carburettors with punctured brass floats, floppy chains everywhere, 6 volt electrical systems= no lights, crankcases joined vertically (what gaskets?), naff brakes, kick-starts, (kick-stops), gravel=sliding down the road=getting out of ditches,...you name it, I've been there, from the original 350cc Royal Enfield Bullet, to the 1000cc Vincent HRD vee-twins, done it, don't EVER want to do it again... Angry...!
The Japs might have made a mess of Pearl Harbour, etc, but they sure made a good job of designing LOVELY super-bikes... Grin...!!!

I'm going to begin my flight training within the next week or so (I was going to go yesterday, but the forecast called for rain, so I postponed it...and of course it didn't rain).

As far as passenger time, I've got time in a Cessna (1 flight when I was like 4...got me hooked even then!), a few in hot air balloons, and literally thousands of hours in commercial planes ranging from the B1900D to the Boeing 777-200ER.  (Flight Attendant for Continental.  lol)

Most of the time I was with CAL though, was spent in the pit....it's much more fun there than in the cabin!

Do you blokes in the US have to 'sign up' for a course or something? I get this indication when people are saying things like 'Have to find $XXXX before I can ..........".

As I said I have had a TIF and will have my medical (fingers crossed, for me), shortly. But all we have to do here is buy the 'Student kit' with the log book and manual etc for $140-00, and from then on you can take 10 years to get to your GFPT if you like. Then another 5 years to get your PPL, if you choose.
I'm planning on having around 1 lesson every 2 or 3 weeks (quicker if I come across some extra $ in some way) and I can discontinue any time and take up again years later.
With a minimum of 30 hrs to get my GFPT, it will probably take over a year to get there, but that's OK.

Is it the same in the UK and US or is it, as I said, a bigger committment, short term, money wise, to go for a PPL?  Grin Wink

P.S. I don't want to seem facetious, I know there are people whose financial situation doesn't allow even a long term committment of a small amount (I've been there). But now that my kids are all grown up and there's just the Mrs and I, and I am still able to work (semi retired), I'm able to do it over an extended period (otherwise i couldn't commit either, to a short period involving $000's). So I'm just wondering if that's not possible in other places.

I see. That's pretty cheap. The lessons here are usually the hiring cost of the plane plus about $30 or $40 for the instructor. (That's Australian dollars, of course).

Yep, I saw the GRITS site - I said so in a post just after you gave the link ("I see, it's all clear to me now") is what I said. Sorry, maybe not clear enough. But thanks, now I know another wonderful fact..................lol Grin

Hey! it isn't too bad to get your ppl and work your way up that way, but I'm going to school to fly, and manage an airport/aviation related business...

I'm working towards a degree in aviation management with minors in flight technology, and communication studies...eventually I hope to be part of a Missionary aviation service...

Unfortunately as of right now the school doesn't accept pilot training from anywhere else...something about regulations...

Also the money gets pretty tight when one is working 15-20 hours a week to go to school...luckily this coming semester I hope to work 40-50 hours a week...we shall see!

The "first" leason is $49!  all included,
That's 30 minute ground school, and
a 45 minute flight!! Kimbers first leason
ran about 3 hours and was with all her
books, CD, Eguip, log book, and  nav.
aids, $450, I haven't looked at the break

If you just take the First leason it is $49!!

When I was 8 I lived in the Texas Panhandle, just outside of Amarillo, on what used to be one of the biggest cattle ranches in the US.

One evening, just before a really nasty storm a cropduster landed on the road right outside our little cluster of houses Shocked.  He tied his duster up outside and spent the night.  In the morning it was halfway across the field and sitting in a puddle of mud up past the axles. Roll Eyes  Myself and two other little boys assisted in the digging out and recieved as payment fifteen minutes in the air each.

My turn consisted of him taking off, making a 90 degree turn and then bouncing off the roof of the barn.  (Yeah, barnstorming!)  Then he let me handle the stick while he did the rudder.  Didn't last too long.  Ten seconds after he let go I dipped the wings to about seventy degrees and we were about to go into the ground (about 300 ft) when he yanked the stick away.

After landing I noticed his heart beating through his shirt.  Lots of FUN! Grin
