How did you save/export your gmax file to an mdl file?

If you just renamed the *.gmax to *.mdl it won't work.

Check the thread "gmax to FS2002"   Unless you installed the proper converter dll from the FS2002 PRO disks, you won't get the gmax file converted to a format that makemdl.exe can "read".

I think Felix missed this. You would need the Gamepack included only with FS2002 Pro to export in MDL format. There is no other way to get it.

No, certainly not. This would be illegal. Go purchase FS2002 Pro.

Actually I didn't miss it - this was his second topic on the matter.  This time he said he'd made the MDL.... I was curious to know how he did it WITHOUT the gamepack.

#1 - It is

#2 - We're not going to risk damaging Simviation's name by remotely suggesting that someone send you the necessary converters.

Why not go the route of asking someone to help you converting the model?  Sure it'll take time, but on the other hand, FS2004 isn't too far away and MS should be releasing the gamepack for public download anyway.

I realised that. Just wanted to make it absolutely clear. Apologies for my abrupt reply. I could be wrong but have an idea Mr Snooganhead knows more about this than he's prepared to let on.  Roll Eyes

It could be.

THe other method is described in a Tip/Tutorial at the Freeflight Design Shop pages, ... using an available MD3 (Quake model) exporter, then using an old 3DExploration to convert the MD3 file to an X file which makemdl can read.

What I haven't checked out is whether texture mapping and animations come through as well.

After trying this & all alternative methods I can find I've come to the conclusion the only practical method is with the FS2002 Gamepack. I just wish it was clear if the new FS2004 Gamepack will be included with FS2004 or a separate download as with CFS3. Also whether it will be capable of exporting FS2002-compatible models.

From all I've seen and heard, gmax, nor a gamepack are being included, so I expect Microsoft to release an FS2004 gamepack separately.

I would expect that a FS2004 model should work in FS2004.  For example, there is no difference in FSDS to make a FS2004 model.
