Auto Installers MUST be outlawed (Read 1021 times)

The plane is autoinstalled in 3 parts but clearly there's a MAJOR problem somewhere.

The result is that after getting the same prog crashing problems as another user, in the end my whole computer system has been damaged.

And because the software was autoinstalled, I don't know how.

We place a lot of trust in designers whose software we place on our valuable systems in which we invest a lot of time and effort. Trouble is there are guys out there who clearly don't know as much as they think they do.

I can honestly say that my biggest problems have ALWAYS been with autoinstalled aircraft. When I've installed planes myself that have given problems, I've just removed them. Simple. Problems gone. With an autoinstalled plane, often it's not that simple - and you have no way of tellng just what hidden damage it may have done even if you think you've removed it.

I for one will NEVER install another aircraft with an autoinstaller after this - I don't care where it comes from because I've had problems with even some well-known names who use them. Not only that, I find it insulting that they think they know better than I DO where things should be installed on MY COMPUTER.

So what do you think? Are you a girlie who needs someone 'cleverer' than you to install an aircraft on your computer? Or can you do it yourself?

If enough people think the same, we can get designers to stop using these monstrosities.

I've never been big on autoinstalled planes either.  They're great if you're a newbie, but even then...you're not going to learn how to do it manually if it's autoinstalled.

So put my name on your petition!   Wink

I don't mind auto install aircraft but I find it easy just unzipping the file and moving them to the correct folder. I've done this since CFS1.

Exactly the point of the original post, I think.  It's not that difficult to do a manual installation (though it takes some practice if you're new at it).  So why bother with autoinstallers that could potentially crash your entire system?

I'll never download another "Self Installing" aircraft, ever again.

The only auto-install aeroplane I've ever used is the FSD T38.
Auto-install scenery never seems to cause any trouble however.
But yeah, I'm all for doing it manually so I can track what is happening.

normally I prefere manual that way if it screws up at least its my fault, but in some cases  I think theyre essential ie the fox four Korea campaign, must be  1000+ individual files involved Shocked

All members of this forum should know my inherent dislike of auto-installers by now. Too many designers do not know the best way of installing aircraft themselves so they're hardly likely to be capable of configuring an auto-install package.

This might sound strange but I've been configuring my own files & those for other designers as auto-extract for some years now. They were so popular at one time that not doing so meant that nobody downloaded the files, particularly CFS & CFS2 campaigns which are notoriously difficult to install.

As this started with the Beverley that Roger mentioned I decided to check it out myself. The package is in 3 parts but I only had time to get the aircraft itself. I would never use an auto-install package without having full trust in the guy who configured it. Therefore, I did the usual thing with this package & redirected the install path to a Temp folder & installed it manually. This proves there's nothing wrong with the aircraft.

I suspect this is the cause of the problem.

The default extract path is not directed to the FS2002 root folder as usual. This means that a new folder named Beverley will be created in FS2002\AIRCRAFT. If you redirect it to a different directory you must manually add the extra AIRCRAFT\Beverley entries to the end of the path or the files will not install correctly.

My Go!zilla downloader offers me the choice of un-zipping or installing the program after downloading it.
I ALWAYS un-zip it to my desktop and then manually move the folders around as needed.
BUT...
I'm wondering if what Roller is talking about are cases where the downloaded program only contains an .exe, (installer), file, and you have no other choice but to "install" it or ignore it...?

Yes Foz. This is an auto-install package. It was configured using the popular ClickTeam installer. This simply extracts the files to the locations decided by the person who configured the package. Providing it was configured correctly it's perfectly safe & there should be no problem. Being the nervous soul I am, I always redirect the extract path for this type of package to a Temp folder & install the stuff manually. (This is not always possible with files configured using other auto-install programs.) I only tried the aircraft itself. From what I can see  it should install OK - providing your FS2002 is in the default location & the default extract path was not changed.

PS. Gozilla used to be known spyware. I don't know if they changed it but I wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole. I recommend DAP.

Hi all

I'm back with my XP system but I can see from the number of system files that it has had to autorepair, truncate etc that I'm gonna have to get yet another new hdrive and reconfig my system yet again after this. No choice, because if I lose the lot a major chunk of my business goes down the Swanee.

Fozzer, yeah you're right. It's the *.exe installers that I'm never gonna touch again.

Doug, I think that the aircraft itself is OK. It's something to do with the panel/gauges. I noticed while it was running that the engine gauges changed like a rocket whenever you revved the engines. Also the sound was very good.

But it crashed the prog when you tried to start from cold with the plane loaded (ie panel problem?) and when I switched to it after starting with another aircraft, my whole display crashed while the panel was in view.

The main files I've had to reinstall so far have been my NVidia display drivers - my screen went to 4bit 800x600 until I did!!  Usually I'm 16 or 32 bit 1280x1024 (or higher if I want, but higher res means slower fr)

But my views now are absolutely rock solid. If it's got an autoinstaller, it's NOT going on my machine.

You're right about most autoinstallers - you can direct them to a temp folder. But this one's a bit of a bu**er because parts 2 and 3 depend on where you sent the first part to. If you try to use a temp folder for part 1, there's no telling where the panel/gauges and sound will end up because parts 2 and 3 send files to positions relative to where you sent the part 1 files to.

THAT'S the problem!!

I'll bite the bullet & check out the sound & panel files. There's nothing in the ClickTeam installer that should affect your system.  It's a simple auto-extractor which works much in the same way as a Self-Extracting zipfile. I prefer these as they can be unzipped in the usual way. There is an Uninstall option with the ClickTeam installer which I suspect could cause problems. I always disable this when configuring packages myself. The aircraft I tried also has this option disabled.

Hi Doug...
I have used Go!zilla for years now to download all my FS "stuff". Had no problems with it so far... Smiley...!
I like the interface, I can see exactly what is going on... Grin...!
I tried DAP but found it a bit confusing to use...a bit like Winzip... Cry...!

I have the early version of Go!zillz, (3.9 i think), which contains the lovely, simple program, Zip!Zilla, which fires up directly the download is completed. It just has two buttons, one for un-zipping, and one for installing programs...
I just press "un-zip" and it puts all my folders straight on to my desktop ready for shuffling around...!
I love simplicity.... Grin...!
