I've seen various posts saying that Directx 9.1a is essential.
I can only find Directx 9.0a. Is there a Directx 9.1a and if so where can I download it?

I can't say if there is a Directx 9.1a. If so, it's most likely a beta. I'm using the latest DirectX 9.0a with no problems. This is the version included with FS2004 Gold.

I've also downloaded and installed 9.0a with no problems. Haven't heard of 9.1!?

Actually I'm presently using Directx 8.? and don't appear to be having any particular problems. What improvements can I expect if I download DirectX 9.0a? Will this download have any negative impact on other games that you may know of.

Will FSCOF also have different versions? Since you say Gold.
I also have the same question, I have direct 8.2 I think or .3 and I don't have any problems. What can I expect from 9.0?

Gold is the final release version. All M$ sims install the latest current version of DirectX by default. They won't usually run properly without it. I believe FS2002 installed DX 8.0 or 8.1
