Moon Landscapes (Read 2138 times)

I have been trawling through some of the download sites for FS2K2 and found various aircraft models for things like the Eagle from Space 1999 and several ships from the Star Wars movies.

Does anyone know of any scenery add-ons of the Moon or Mars or similar?

Nope, it would be a pretty cool idea but no ones done it. The only thing out there is the 'Coruscant' star wars scenery at surclaro.com

I downloaded a cool scenery for FS5 a long time ago.  It was really awsome!  There were satilites that you could land in (like 50,000 ft up).  The best part was the moon though.  It was a huge circle somewhere in the middle of the atlantic.  It was big enough that when you were anywere near the middle, you can't see the edge.  They had the landing sites you could fly over and a futuristic spaceport.  I wish I could tell you where I got it, but it was from a personal webpage.  I haven't been able to find it in the major sites.  (probably too out of date for you anyway, but back then it was awsome! lol)  Grin

I decided to work on a moon scenery to practice my GMax skills.   Grin  Here's a screenshot of it so far.
...

I don't know if I'll upload it if there is already a scenery, but I guess it is good to give ppl a variety.

Ok, lol

But I should say that there are a couple of limitations to this scenery.  For example, there is no real way to fly to the moon in FS, so this scenery is about 1,000 ft above the atlantic somewhere.  Another is that I've been having trouble with crash detection, so if I can't get that fixed, you would fly right through the 3d objects if you hit them (though I will make some areas that you can land at).

But there are some good things, too!  I've already changed to a higher resolution moon texture and I'm going to add a starport and the Apollo landing site and such.  Maybe a govt satillite or two orbiting the moon.  Grin

Wow!  That's awsome!  Keep up the good work!  (I wish I had CFS2  Cry lol)

I'll post a screenshot of the starport when it's done.  My moon scenery is supposed to take place in the near future, so I'm trying not to make it look too 'sci-fi'.  (Although you would think that we are in a sci-fi movie now, the way the cars are starting to look. lol  Roll Eyes)

If you check around I think you can find CFS2 pretty cheap nowadays.

Here's a shot of the Battle of the Airlines scenery (per Astrogeek's post).

...

All you would need is the scenery package from the final mission at http://www.planetaviation.com/virtualairlines/battle/frames.htm

I learn a lot by seeing what others have done and trying to improve on it.  The screenshot looks great but it ran at about 4 fps and the lunar landscape was just a couple of craters that repeated endlessly. You can't see it in this shot but I think the McDonalds slowed it down too.

You also have to have the flight file (included in the mission dl) because it's at night and it looks like crap in the daytime.

BOTA also had an interesting space vehicle, kind of like a Harrier.

Anyway, keep up on the moonscape.  BOTA was fun but not really suited for general use.

Ah, ok.  I haven't dled it yet, but I was going to do it after I checked my email.  Wink  Well, my scenery is kindof the opposite.  It looks good during the day, but doesn't look that great at night.  (It doesn't really look like crap, but it doesn't look right without stars in the sky).  Anyway, I'll check it out and keep on my project!

(I have a couple of new shots of mine if u are interested at my site. http://fsimages0.tripod.com/Sceneries.htm#The Moon) Just so I don't have to keep posting here.  Wink

If you really want to fly to the moon, you must get Orbiter. It's a freeware space sim. There are a variery of space craft that you can get from Sputnik 1 to the USS Voyager from Star Trek. You can travel the entire solar system if you wish. Flight is realistic and the sim virtually has no limits. Good graphics and realistic flight preformance. It comes with the Atlantis Space Shuttle, ISS, Mir, as well as a few other fictional spacecraft and stations. There are several land based stations on Earth (including a highly detailed Cape Canaveral) as well as one on Mars (At Olympus Muns) and the Moon (At the Sea of Tranquility).

You can get Orbiter from www.orbitersim.com
Avsim (www.avsim.com) contains a large library of addons for orbiter. I believe that Flightsim.com may have some Orbiter addons as well.

I have orbiter, too.  It's a very cool program!   8)  But, I've been having trouble with all the physics involved.  Embarrassed  But I have managed to travel from Cape Canaveral to the moon in the cargo ship once.  Grin

Well, I've been taking a break from it for a couple of days.  I've been experimenting with colorizing USGS satilite pictures for photoreal sceneries.  8)  But I haven't given up with the moon yet!  My next steps are to find a good place to put that spaceport, texturize the lunar lander, and put in a satillite or space station a couple thousand ft above the surface.   Grin

Well, I'm back with good news  Grin and not so good news  Undecided.  But the bad news isn't really too bad.  I'll start with the bad news:  I've been designing this scenery in slew mode and didn't really realize how small it was.  It's big enough for a slow cruising (150-maybe200kts) spacecraft to explore, but I forgot to take into consideration that most sci-fi add-ons are fast.  But maybe it'll work out.

The good news is that I'm done with my break, and I just finished two satillites today.  How do they look?

...

...

these things aren't small, but when you're talking about space, they are still hard to find.  It makes for a nice little challenge to keep the scenery interesting.  Grin
