I'm just wondering what everyone's real world experience is.  Please be as specific as possible.  (ie what type's you flew, where you were a controller, who you  fly for, etc...)

I myself do not have any real world flight experience (though once while working as a flight attendant for Continental, my captain wanted me to talk to ATC for him.  lol)  I learned most of my instrument stuff from asking the various pilots that I worked with.  The technique side of things was learned by trial and error.

What about you?

Hi there,
I have my private pilots license. I have about 200 hours. I have my float rating and night rating. I do not have my instrument ratings. I have not flown for about 1 year due to a lack of funds but plan to get flying again soon. FS2002 has got me excited about it all over again. I learned on a 152 and have flown a number of hours in a 172sp. My home airport is ZBB (Boundary Bay). Just south of Vancouver, B.C. near the U.S. border.
Have a good day
Eric

Currently don't hold a licence (nothing to do with certain stunts seen here!), was training with the RAF when one eye went slightly short, so ended up as a loadie. Great job Grin
Currently clock time (when possible) on AN-2s at the local parachute club, but more normally clock time jumping out of them Grin Grin Grin

Close to 1000 hrs -- obtained CPL in 1968 which I allowed to expire by 1982. Have flown C150, C152, C172, C182, Cherokee 140, Cherokee 180, Piper Super Cruiser, Citabria 7GCBC (with 15 hrs of aerobatics course completed), Aeronca Champ, Piper Comanche 260, Grumman AA5 American, Grumman Tiger, Cheetah & Traveller -- all flown as PIC.  Also had 10 hrs dual in a Robinson R-22 helicopter and approx 150 hrs "stick-time" on an S-55 helicopter (prior to learning to fly) and I am a survivor of a helicopter crash that demolished the aircraft but from which 3 of us walked away.

At age 64, I am working getting my PPL privileges renewed which I will complete within the next couple of months here in Abbotsford, BC or at the Langley, BC airport.

Let's see, I've got almost 1000 hrs of simulated time. I've been up a few times as a passenger in 152 & 172s, but only have 1.6 hours total of left seat time in a 172 while flying with a good friend of mine who is a CFII Grin

No real flying time but I'm waiting for my TIF to happen - in 4 weeks hopefully - if I don't become a cripple again............ Grin

I'm 44 and have the time and the funds (sort of) to have a go at my PPL over a reasonable time, so I'm going to give it a go.

But as some know, my claim to FAME, is my ride in a Spitfire V (RAAF trainer) at Richmond RAAF Base just west of Sydney (it's in FS2000) in the early 60's with my grandfather.

I've done 33 hours altogether so far, 2.5 in a C-182, and the rest in the C-172.  Done 10 solo as well.  I tell ya, you'll remember you're first solo for your whole life, an incredible experience Grin Shocked 8).  Would like to get my CPL and all those other ratings, including a float (that could be cool), but I don't think I'd really like to go all the way to ALTP, away from home too much, and it also takes a long time to get there.

I got up to commercial and instrument for single- and multi-engine airplanes.  I nearly got my CFI but I just got sick of flying in general at that point and haven't flown a real airplane since.

Polio left my eyes "fixed" Straight ahead!
I have 20/20 vision but have to turn my
head to see to the sides, a no no for flying!!
The army did not see it as a problem!!
This is the only after effect of the polio
I had when I was 2 years old, I am very
lucky!!

I have had the opposite experience with eyesight.

I'm almost blind in one eye, but this is OK for most things including flying (PPL anyway), but none of the armed forces would touch me with a barge pole.
But I've managed to find myself (for better or worse) in action, without the help of the military.  Grin Wink

brensec;

The movement of the eye is what tells
the brain how far away an object is,
My eyes see a flat plane in front of me,
making even driving a car a bit of a problem,
I just keep plenty of space in front of me,
The screen on the FS is very real to me
because of this and about the limit of my
angle of vision. With a 22" screen I have to
move my head a bit to see all of it.
Also where you live can have a bearing
on passing the "test"
Maybe I could move to Outer Slovibigaki,
and be a airline piliot!! Tongue

I can see Ozzy now...

Instructor:  Ok Oz, we're going to practice straight and level flight today.

Ozzy:  Right, we're going to buzz the tower.

Instructor:  No, we're doing straight and level flight.

Ozzy:  Right, we're going to fly inverted the length of the runway.

Instructor:  No, we're doing straight and level flight.  Please turn the engine back on.

Ozzy:  Right, we're going to do that helicopter stunt they do at air shows.

Instructor:  No, we're doing straight and level flight.  Please close the door and stop spitting on people.

Ozzy:  Right, we're going to fly inverted the length of the runway, buzz the tower, and then do a 'helicopter stunt' with the plane.

Instructor:  *Sigh*  and to think I left that good job in the sewer department...

I fly R/C and I believe that counts as real world experiance. RC aircraft are getting more complicated and more realistic every year. From actual turbojet engines to miniature autopilots that have the same capabilities as one on a commercial airliner would. They've evolved from simple toys to hightech models that are used from everything from surveylance (USAF's predator) and testing new full scale aircraft designs. If you still just think they are just toys, go to the Top Gun RC airshow, held every summer at West Palm Beach, Florida and then tell me what you think. I'm looking at a picture of a US Airways R/C A330, if I didn't know any better I'd swear it was real.

I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday. I see (pardon the pun Grin). Thanks for the explanation.
I know what you mean about the 'test' being different from place to place. But I suppose, in your case where it's a question of depth and perception, it would be critical.

I may just have to agree with some of this.....you would never believe the total complexity of a high performance glider and its wing functions.......I have flown them, and I can tell you that it wouldn't even be possible without the help of a computer radio.......ailerons mixed as spoilers, ailerons mixed as flaps, flaps mixed as ailerons, giving full camber control to suit the flying conditions.......all this with total compensation of the pitch attitude and rudder thrown in for when you need to make a co-ordinated turn at low speed in a thermal.....makes my head spin faster than the A/C.....as as for the Polo Grounds in Florida where they fly the Top Gun Competition, I have a friend, Graeme Mears, who has won it and know the 1/3 scale Tiger Mothhttp://www.davepatrickmodels.com/tigermoth/tigermoth.htm he won with.......as an idea of the value of this bird, he was offered $35,000 USD for it Shocked , at the Toledo Expo.....the premier model aircraft show in the Eastern U.S.....this is no toy......
.......so Yep Orenda, I can agree with your observations......flying R/C should count for something...... Wink
