Has anybody noticed the historical references in Simpsons? Its interesting to notice.

For example

The evacuation of Saigon

...

...

Then had anybody noticied in one of the itchy and scratchy in the wacking day episode the name Oliver Stone came up. I think he was the guy that filmed the Kenedy assanation.

There is more, but I'll post it when I come across them.

Oliver Stone directed JFK, a movie about the Kennedy Assassination.

There's the one with the Wright Brothers plane.
"Not the Wright Bros Plane!! The Smithsonian's going to have my ass on a platter."

The Kennedy Assassination was filmed by a guy named Zapruder.
I remember us watching him get shot a dozen times in History class last year. "Back and to the left, back and to the left....."  Tongue

What I remember most is "Bert the Turtle". "Remember kids, when you see the flash, just duck and cover." My history teacher has a cabinet full of historical footage.

Hi all,
"The Simpsons" seem to have a wickedly good time poking fun at our cultural icons.  No one is spared from their good natured ribbing.

Another more suttle historical reference (or i guess you would call it a artistic reference) is Side Show Bob's prison number-24601.  If you don't recgonize that, it's the number that Jean Valjean from the play Les Miserables also wears.

Don't forget about the moon landing when homer was sitting in his bean bag singing and eating and not watching it happening. ;

The Simpsons is most likey the only TV show that will, without hesitation, attack, pun or make fun of any and everything. It does not matter the country ( Marge saying "I would expect this from a french poodle, not an american dog") the person (Just pick a celebrity!), or the leaders of countries( agian, pick a leader) and lets not forget poking fun at their own network FOX. That is why they are so popular. The ability of Matt Groeing to make lite of any subject. The only subject I dont think he has touched is 9/11.
BTW, I LOVE THE SIMPSONS! Grin

Yea, like the Model UN club one. Milhouse is talking about Poland "I heard they set a rocket to the sun once, at night. And there was that submarine with the screen door." Speaking of making fun of Poland, "All in the Family" was another show that would poke fun at everything. "God made woman from Adam's rib, see, cheaper cut"

Hello all,
A little current world affairs.  Here in the Seattle area, just this past Memerial Day, the local Fox station aired the Simpson episode where Homer had to go to New York to pick up his AWOL car.  In that episode the Twin Towers figured very prominently.  I thought it was a very fitting homage for that holiday.

That one with the number I would never catch.

Remember the episode where homer got a trampoline from Krusty? There was a scene where  the camara backs and shows a field of wounded people. I think that was taken from the movie Gettysburg, where the camara backed up showing many wounded people.

There was anonother episode when homer rides a nuclear bomb with a cowboy hat, just to bomb a group of beatniks. I think that was taken from the movie "Dr.Strangelove" where the character Kong rides the bomb because the rail wont release.

Then there was another Dr.Stangelove reference, when Side Show Bob stole a nuclear bomb, then the mayor and military staff meets in a war room with the world map against the wall with a circular table and a circular light fixture.

well it wasnt exactly because of homer, burns decided he wanted the plant back because homer and pals in moes were taking the piss out of him and he wanted the respect back, and then the germans wanted to sell because the plant was in such a poor state and would have cost them double the cost of the plant to fix, that and the racoons:)

Another histoical reference (sort of) was the Haloween episode when Lisa managed to get guns banned in Springfield because she found the grave of a 20 year old man who had been killed by guns-his name was William James.  Later William comes back to life and it turns out to be Billy the Kid, there is also an appearance of Jessie James in his group and they also allow Kaiser Wilhelm to be a part too (after he convinces them he's a cowboy).  Then they basically take over the town.  Anyway, thats kind of a historical reference.

Funnily enough, the name of the movie is "Soylent Green"  Grin Grin Grin Grin

Charlton Heston stars as a character in 'futuristic city' where the planet has been completely stripped of it's beauty (nature) and is dark and dirty and there is little food or anywhere to grow food.
Along came 'Solent Green' a protein and vitamin rich, processed food which is virtually feeding the entire human race.
Long story short, Heston's father goes along to a place where you can 'cash in' when you've had enough of the miserable life. Heston follows his fathers body to a "Soylent Green" manufacturing plant where he discovers that 'Soylent Green' is made of reconstituted Human remains.
The movie closes with an apparently 'crazy' Heston screaming "SOYLENT GREEN IS POEPLE" over and over.

Good 'b' grade film in the seventies.  Grin Grin Wink

The 'Model UN ' episode where the kids get marooned on an island has a number of obvious references to "Lord of the Flies" (not historic - but a book)
Nelson - "The hunt is on" while painting his cheeks with charcoal.......... Grin

The 'B Sharps' episode is very obviously a 'hystoric' satire of the Beatles career. Harrison even makes a last minute appearance.

I suppose the episode where a St Patrick's Day celebration results in Springfield declaring itself 'Dry' is a pretty good satirical look at 'Prohibition' and the exploits of the 'Bootleggers' and the 'Untouchables'.

Yes I suppose it is a historical reference. Grin Grin

My dad tried to "lecture" me on the themes for Soilent Green when I was a kid.

There are some references to JFK in simpsons. Like there was a small thing where JFK is on a PT Boat and I think it was numbered 109.

I'm not sure who said it in Simpsons JFK or mayor Quimby but one of them said. 'Ich bin ein Berliner'

Another episode when Side Show Bob ran for mayor. When there was a televised debate between Side Show Bob and Quimby and Side Show Bob win because of appearance, they copied the debate between Nixon and Kennedy.

In the same episode when Side Show Bob became mayor, Lisa went to the library to do some research and fell asleep in the center of the library, they copied the scene from the "Presidents Men" Goldstien was reading the votes. Then Lisa and Bart met "Deepthroat".

Again in the Side Show Bob mayor episode, he said "You want the truth, you cant handle the truth. You need me." That was Nicolsons line in a Few Good Men.

There was another episode when Burns ran for mayor and had that big black and white photo of him in the backround.

There seems to be alot of political references

it was quimby who said ich bin thingy when the germans bought the power plant.
they also had two presidential candidates endorsing beer, cant remember who it was, i think nixon was one of them . infact they take the pee out of nixon alot in both the simpsons and futurama, and same for clinton, like when lisa looses the band competition because of glow sticks, then clinton comes along at the end awards her the prize and says something like if you cant win always complain and you will get oyur way, marge says thats a pretty lousy moral, and he says well i'm a lousy president. or something like that:)

The JFK character also said it on the PT 109 when grandpa was telling his story about WWII (The Hellfish). They then accused him of being a Nazi and beat the crap out of him.
Quimby also says "ich bin ein Springfielder" at some point. I think in the episode where they celebrate either Jebadiah's Day or Whacking Day.

There's the one where Lisa sneaks into college. At the gym she dreams about Kennedy. He calls here Leeser.
Then there's the Jebadhia Springfield one where they expose him as Hanns Sprungfeld. He fights George Washington and tears the painting.

There's also the one where Homer and Apu go to India. They're riding on the camels through the desert to Sringfield Airport. Apu says something like "I'm sorry we couldn't take a cab but I spent the last of my money on airline tickets." That scene is  from Lawrence of Arabia.

Theres reference to Ghengis Khan on one. Lisa's dreaming of what the school can do with more money and invisions virtual reality helments. "Ah yes, hello Lisa, I'm Ghengis Khan. Today you'll go where I go, defile what I'll defile, eat who I eat. Eh."

Then there's the Duff Gardens one where they visit the Hall of Patriots or something. It has Babe Ruth, Abe Lincon and a bunch of others, and they're all drunk.

The whole episode has a kind of historical reference (movie history at least) in fact.
You may not know but the movie that Mel stars in is a remake of 'Mr Smith goes to Washington' which starred James Stewart.

Barts grandfather was talking about his experience in WWII, where he had to clear landmines. He pointed the tank in a direction and it hit a mine anyways. He then finished off the story by saying, "Thats how I got the Iron Cross." Which was strange because the Iron Cross is a German award.

Speaking of war, I think Skinner was having a Vietnam memory and he was trying to break out of prison, one of the POWs mention that Jane Fonda was partying with the VCs.

Then in the Valentine episode there was an Apocalypse Now reference where Skinner was on a boat in a river and one of his closes friends gets shot.

I'm just curious which one of the Chicago 7 went to North Vietnam as a political statelent? Was it the one that tried to raise the Pentagon?

Remember the one where Homers power plant goes on strike? They made a reference to the labor union strikes in the early 1900s. Factories needed a private police that controlled protest in front of factories. So, Mr.Burns said something like "Smithers get me those labor police like the ones they had in the 1920s." Then they get Grandfather Simpson, and three other men telling them a boring story.

In that same episode, Mr Burns has a flashback to his youth. His grandfather is taking Burns on a tour of his "Atom Mill." The grandfather accuses a young worker of stealing atoms and walls him up in "the abandoned coke oven." While being dragged off the kid says something like "You can't treat the working man like this. One day will from a union, and then grow corrupt, and the Japaneese will eat us alive!" To which the grandfather says "The Japaneese! Thoes sandal wearing goldfish tenders? Bash, flimshaw!"

I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday.
