I'm sure this has been done somewhere and sometime, but I thought I'd give it a shot...
What is your favorite airplane movie?
Mine are:
The Bridges at Toko-Ri
12 O'Clock High
Airplane!
Honorable Mention goes to:
Apocalypse Now
Blackhawk Down
Flight of the Intruder
BTW, the Internet Movie Database lists a 'Movie' called "Uncrating and Assembly of the P-47 Thunderbolt Airplane" I would love to get ahold of that one!

You forgot 'Battle of Britain'
I voted for Airplane as the entire movie is based on one. The next movie id pick would be The Bridges at Toko-Ri. I like the flight scenes in 13 Days and Tears of the Sun, they're quite impressive

Yes, those F-18 clips gave me chills! The words going through my mind when the loads were dropped were: "Behold airpower!"

Mine by far is 12 O'Clock High. I don't know why but I think one reason is the cast is great-especially Gregory Peck.

Some others are that get honorable mention:
Empire of the Sun
Bat 21
Memphis Belle
Anything Spielberg touches is gold, but I consider 'Empire of the Sun' one of his best works. Especially with that P-51 fly-by.
Bat 21 has some fantastic footage, and Gene Hackman is practically a god...

Why Airplane of course! But I love the P-40 flying sequences in 1941, and where oh where is TopGun?

Rex Kramer: "Striker, listen, and you listen close: flying a plane is no different than riding a bicycle, just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes."
Ted Striker: "Surely you can't be serious. "
Rumack: "Yes I am serious...and don't call me Shirley. "
Rumack: "You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital. "
Elaine Dickinson: "A hospital? What is it?"
Rumack: It's a big building with a lot of sick people, but that's not important right now. "

With the exception of seeing some F-14's in action, I never really did like Top Gun that much. I don't think it has held up as well as some others have over the years as say, Midway has. Any movie that asks me to believe F-5 Tigers are Migs is utterly ridiculous.
Aside from that, the scenes that are not in the air are mindless and predictable.
Great flying scenes though!
Other movies that use F-5's for Migs...
Iron Eagle
Iron Eagle II
Iron Eagle III
and on, and on, and on...

if you really want a list of problems with topgun i could give you one, but in the end most movies involving aviation are inacurate. the thing with topgun is simply if your a russian official would you like to see a bunch of accurate mock up migs being blown to pieces?
although half those movies on your list i have never seen in my life so i cant comment.

I'm reading the book '
We Were Soldiers Once... And Young
' by (ret) LT. GEN Harold G. Moore and Joseph L. Galloway. Very interesting. In fact, I happened to read on page 24 about a Captain Louis R. Lefebvre who was a native of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. That's the town I live in
I read further later on that he was wounded and had to be evac'ed out of the La Drang Valley on November 14, 1965 which was the first day of the battle portrayed in the movie
We Were Soldiers
. I looked in the phone book and found a couple local listings for Lefebvre but no Louis Lefebvre. My grandmother told me that he died a while ago.
She also told me that a husband of one of my mom's co-workers went to school with him.

that has a simple reason: the red-flag OPFOR did use Mig's in the past, but had great difficulties in finding the parts for them, so they reverted to F-5's and F-18's in russian splinter-blue Su-27 schemes.
The only migs used in US Airforce training at the moment are the german ones, usually in europe because they are pre-M models without air-refuieling capabilities and small fuel tanks.

I dot remember seing any F-5s in the Iron Eag;e seriesand I'm convinced they were shot in Israel. This would explain the Kfir (Mig23s in Iron eagle 1) and F-4s (Mig29s in Iron Eagls 2) that and the second one was shot on an IDF base

I stand corrected. I remembered it was something ridiculous though. I loved the 'Mig 4 Phantoms' I understand it may be a little hard to get ahold of some Russian Migs for a movie, but I've been able to identify an F-5 since I was 12 years old, and an F-4 Phantom maybe even longer. Admittedly, I may be a little more of an airplane nut than the average Joe, but I think most people would recognize an American plane when they see it.
