Does anyone know of a good freeware (or reasonably priced payware) application that can be used for repainting? I just don't think that PSP is worth $100...it's a good program, and I'm hardly a cheapskate, but I think $100 is a bit much for what you get in return...thanks

Try Pixia
http://www.simviation.com/fsdesign_utilities.htm
or PhotoPlus 5.5. (Similar to PSP)
http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/serif/ph/ph5/index.asp
Both full unrestricted free graphics editors.

You might want to check out the G.I.M.P. (General Image Manipulation Program) It is just like Photoshop, with the same features for free!

Thanks Christian. I didn't suggest The GIMP as it's a Linux based application with a Windows front end. Also a big download compared with Pixia or PhotoPlus 5.5. I'm told it's excellent but I never figured it out.

I didn't realize anyone here used Photoplus ???
I used to use it back in the days when the freeware version was able to edit GIF files.
But last year I found a used version of Photoshop online cheap

For PSP read Paint Shop Pro - not Adobe PhotoShop. I use PSP7 (Paint Shop Pro 7) & swear by it. Professional quality & user-friendly with all the features of PhotoShop at a fraction of the price.
The free PhotoPlus 5.5 has a very similar UI & features.
The latest PSP8 is available for $99 direct from the manufacturer, possibly cheaper if you look around or are a student.

There is a trial version of PSP7 and 8. Personally, i love PSP. Ihavent tried Photoshop but PSP is so easy to use and innovative. I suggest it.

The paint program itself is nowhere near as important as your ability to use it. As I'm constantly trying to point out, it's no use having the most expensive equipment if you have no idea on how to use it. I've been using various versions of Paint Shop Pro for years. The tools & functions are second nature to me. I've tried most of the alternatives, both free & commercial programs, & found nothing that compares with it.
This is purely my own preference & others feel the same way about their own favourite programs.
I ended up purchasing PSP5 when the time limit on the free trial expired as I felt lost without it. It suits me & I'm comfortable with it. I know all the standard image formats + special FS texture formats & what they're used for. I've even written tutes on the basics of repainting aircraft textures. That doesn't make me any good at doing it myself. For that you need a special talent which sadly I don't possess.

Very true my friend! A talented person at using paintshop pro can do better things then a newbie using photoshop.
I personally like photoshop over paint shop pro because I used to use it when I worked in a desktop publishing department, but when I quite that job, all I had was a 'trial' version of psp to use so I bought a used copy of photoshop
