Problem, I have a decent machine but slow fr's and my textures tend to blend together except for the area around the aircraft.. I have a decent system.......
Pentium III 900M
512 Mb Ram
geforce 2
and a 20 gig HD...
Okay I admit it's alittle outdated, Ok alot but it holds up well under everything else. My game settings are at medium and I have done quite a lot of tweeking and can only average about 18 fs. in dense area's and if I fly a fast jet I.E. milatary forget.
Other than the obvious processor what more could I do to get juist a little more preformance.'
Also went to download new drivers for video card and they won't install the kernal says there is an error aftor about 10% completion. Other than my OS what could the problem be here?

I think that apart of change your processor you should have to buy a new graphic card, like a ge-force 4, you have enough ram to run fs2002, try downloading directX 9, and close your running programs , some of them use a lot of ram that can slow down the game

thanx do have directx9 havn't upgraded card though, most of my programs are closed except for those in the background i can't find. my pc idle's at about 80% with no screen saver and active desktop off so i know there is something somewhere. Other than my cable connection still haven't figured out how to pause it when not online guess could just turn modem off.. OK so I don't claim to be a computer genius and somtimes the obvious just goes over my head

Try diffragmenting your computer. The last time I did it, my frame rates jumped up by 5 f.p.s. Just a little tip, if you plan on flying in the Flight Simulator community for a long time, i.e. (buying Flight Simulator 2004), then you might really want to consider buying a new computer with above 2 GHz. Your memory is fine. I had a 1.1 GHz, and was averaging 20f.p.s. I bought a Dell 8300 Desktop with 2.6Ghz, and now I average 60f.p.s. anywhere I fly. I know its hard to buy a new computer, but if you seriously want faster frame rates, you should consider it. Happy flying. Peace out. 8)

Thanx Speed, Sometimes the truth hurts
. Again I know the obvious. And Maybe its just time to break down pull the padlock off my wallet and buy a new machine. I can tolerate it for now. As I said its not really to bad but i am a bit of a perfectionist... And sometimes it gets annoying that everything in the distance is blurred. But I did find a quick solution last night. As I said last night sometimes the simple solutions go rite over my head.. I locked my target fr's at 15. This seemed to optimize everthing- sure the fr are slow but for now the graphics are good and the game will hold 15 fps. without lagging. This will hold me over until. I get a faster processor. Thanx agai n for all the advice and help.

The Geforce 4 can vary in preformance. MX chipsets are slower while Ti chipsets are quite good. If you want a mid range card that is quite cheap, the GeforceFX 5200 is one of these. Radeons are good too. A 9000pro or up is good.
BTW, I have a similar setup and get about 20-30fps air and 8-20fps at the airport.
I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday.

You have a good system but try turning down AI as this will slow your PC Down.
I have a lot of AI but I use POSKY aircraft and these lower the fps quite bad but i still get about 15FPS in between a POSKY 747 and a 777.
Your choice!

Again thanx to everyone for the advice. After a little more research and the tips I have come to average about 20-fps from the cockpit no matter the scenery density. and from the spot view it drops and hovers rite at 10fps even in dense areas. I did some tweeking on my video card with more quality advice found in these forums, Yank everything off my HD that is just there to take up space. and dusted the months of funk of my mother board. Everyhting is fine now. Or at least till I get in another picky mood. Then maybe I'll go shopping
