Here are two shots 1 from my stock setup and the second with the new graphics card...
Note the squareness of the elevator against the fuselage, flaps, etc - this is before.
And these are the types of graphics Im getting now...
I know these are two totally different shots, but they were the best I had that showed the differences.

The card is a PNY Technologies Verto GeFORCE FX 5200. It is very similar to the GeFORCE 440 se but with 128 mb ddr. I got it for $119.00 at best buy. I have the pci version - but they also have an agp version for the same price.
Here's pretty much the same shot w/ the new card. I used slew mode to line it up as similarly as I could remember.
The biggest difference is the water effects and the reflection/glare on the fuselage. Note the elevators and flaps are slightly less grainy from this distance as well.

St. Maarten - Princess Juliana Intl. Its under "carribean" region. I found out about it by seeing some real pictures of 747's coming in over that beach about 40 ft msl with folks just standing underneath them like it was no big deal. If you go to
www.airliners.net
and click on most popular pics theres a bunch from this airport - something to behold.

Thanks for the info... I don't have any screenshots of my before and after, but I went to the same airport and used the same plane as you and took a screenshot of what I'm running just to compare with yours... I've got a 900 mhz Duron w/ 512MB SDRAM, 40 gb h/d, Win XP, and a GeForce 4 MX440 w/128 mb sdram (not ddr, but sdram), and I had onboard 32mb sis video that would absolutely scream through CFS1 and FS95, until I upgraded to this GeForce. That's a good card you've got!! The water detail gives it that tropical vacation feel to it!!8) Yuh mon!! (By the way... this is slew mode).

Well - you might just have your water details turned off. Go into your settings tab on the main screen and go to display - then slide the water effects thing over until it says reflections and detail.
If your already having problems w/ graphics it will probably slow you down - but thats how the water gets the look I have. I had to turn it off before because I was using the onboard graphics.

I went to my settings and checked the water details settings... they were turned up all the way... not sure what else it can be unless I've got something else configured wrong or the card is doing it's best to run this thing. My comp will generate that kind of water detail with CFS2, but not FS2002... ???

Here's a screenshot I got from CFS2, not even 2 minutes ago, and it clearly displays the water with more detail... I'm thinking I might not have enought comp for fs2002

Well - I dont know the specs on cfs at all - but its a possibility that it doesnt need as much stuff as fs2k2 so it runs better - did you check to make sure the display settings were the same?

yeah... CFS2 and FS2000 are pretty close when it comes to the graphics engines... FS2002 is a couple of notches above this, but below CFS3... (WAY BELOW!!)... but anyways.. I can manage... I don't want to get too close to the water unless I wanna go swimming.... hehe... after all, this comp is nothing but a 900mhz Duron trying to feed a hungry graphics card. I can get some nice cloud shots though!! This is over the same airport that this post was started on...

Rgr that!! Nice shots by the way.... I was in the air doing some aerial photography of the area to post in the airport below for the tourists, hehe... (thanks for putting a smile on my face!)
Hope my excessive chatter didn't interfere with your communication to the tower... LOL!
Looks like your and my card put out about the same as far as water detail goes.

My detail level has stabilized since I started to fly at 1600x1200 in 2002 and CFS2.........for posting I only break them down in Photoshop to 800x600 or less depending on image size......this program does it faithfully to the image quality and I get no moire effect in the reduction......

FS2004 seems to be more graphic-card dependent compared to CFS2 and FS2002...
but if you want to go to St maarten in the new version, i really recommend it. The default scenery even has the famous warning sign in place

If I'm flying low to the ground, I'll average 15-20FPS with medium to high details. I can't get my aircraft detail to the high postion as I think the card doesn't support it. But I can turn on the scenery detail all the way up and still average 15-20 FPS with anti-aliasing on, and tri-filtering turned on. Up in the air tho, the clouds are turned up to 100% density?... Hold.. here we go... i got some screen shots of my settings hehe..

I think you may get better water detail if you click on the reflections box. Mine seemed to improve after I did this.

Angel_Maker, your framerate will improve if you set the limiter to 20, and if you DISABLE (yes disable) the antialiasing option in FS. use the one in the graphics card driver instead

Ok.. i disabled anti-aliasing in the fs settings and lowered frame rates to 20, and did see a stabilization in the frame rates, but as far as antialiasing in my graphics card driver, I turned it all the way up to 4XS (Direct #D only). There are other settings on this tho... anyone know what they do? Here are the other antialiasing settings... Antialiasing 4X, Antialiasing-Quincunx Antialiasing(tm), Antialiasing 2X, Antialiasing (off), and Antialiasing application (which is what I had it set on before). Thanks for your help guys.

Hmmm...
This is making my good ole GeForce 3 Ti200 64MB DDR look pretty good. And I was thinking about changing it.
I'm running the latest v44 nVidia drivers which have given quite an improvement I think, but as well as good sharp screen images I've got great reflections, more water detail than you can shake a stick at and resonable FRs
I've had to reduce the pic down to only medium resolution to keep under 100k (it's actually just under 90k) - but I think I'll be looking at cpu before g/card now

Its interesting seeing how different hardware configurations come out with different results.
Rifleman, im supprised at your pics, i run pretty much the same card as you and mine curn up stuff like this with bearly a stutter, is it because you have it on such a stupidly high res, or do you have a smaller processor?

What is it that you're saying ?.....is running 1600x1200 not a good thing to do on a 19" monitor ?......I think I get fine detail level with a minimum of jaggies anywhere......water reflections are not high on my list, but when I see your shots it looks to me like you have no ground shadows on.....I have every slider maxed except for ATC.....
BTW My sys is almost identical to yours but for Ram. Since I run 98SE I only have 512,...

Maccers, I've been thinking...maybe its time of day, and sun angle which are giving us a difference ......if you look in my " Thanks Fireman " post, you can see a definate difference between the first and second shots, if you look at the water reflections.....these two shots were taken on the same approach, with just a height and sun angle difference......? ?....waddaya think ?

Hiya Rifle,
Have to say, with a GeForce 4 (even the MX) I wouldn't be happy with what appears to be your water. Also your closer-up ground textures
seem
to be a bit smudgy but I might be wrong. Are you running the latest drivers in your setup? The ones I've got only came out VERY recently and they're much better than v43.
I've also got a 19" (screen that is...) and I run 1280 x1024 x32

Hey Roger, I think that the water reflections are a personal thing.....I asked Stormy about the water textures and she prefers the ones that Maccers has shown, but for my liking, its too blotchy for what I would like to see.....I remember flying into Vancouver and never seeing that sort of effect.....its a personal thing I guess. On the ground textures though, I do agree that mine seem to look like they leave a little to be desired in the way of definition......but then I usually fly for the flying and not really taking too much notice of Terra Firma, other than to avoid running into it too rapidly...
