This also ocours partialy in other missions like bombing ships. You do find a couple of goal target ships but there is always at least 8 ships (destroyers and cargos) or 1 cruzader an 2 destroyers.

In those cases I advice you to fly to your waypoint and then fly arround in a methodic way. Use the map (press M key) to orientate yourself. It takes alot of patience, I already spend 15 minutes trying to spot ships.

I've heard that when you fly a reconaissons mission you need to circle above your target for at least five minutes.  If you use the warp you know you'll always come out of the warp 7-5 miles from the target, so after you've flown that 7-5 miles, just circle over that spot for a while.  It works for me.

hmm.. I'm flying a recon flight tonight and check it out. It could be a mission bug, I had a few missions I would hit warp at take off and when I reached destination I would get "Mission Failed"... .. what did I do wrong? ???

something I remembered, maybe your pilot has poor vision. Vision is important for these kind of missions.
Also, dont thrust your tactical display alone when searching targets, use your own eyes. Jump for Spot View and circle arround your aircraft scaning the sea (assuming it's sea). Boats are visible at a much much longer range than the tactical display.
