Hi Craig...!
To avoid the pop up ads from the site, visit your local music shop and ask for a copy of.....

500 Chord Shapes for the guitar. Compiled & arranged by Keith Papworth. Published by B. Feldman & Co. Ltd.

My copy has a price of 3/-, (three shillings)....!!

You will quickly learn all your 3 chord riffs with the help of this book.
Highly recommended for all budding 'Strat players... Grin...!

Cheers mate... Grin...!
Paul.
(England).

P.S. it might not stop the pop-up ads, but at least you will be able to play the guitar just like Jimi Hendrix... 8)...!

Hi Craig...
are you just running the Simviation site while all this is going on...?
I've been logged onto Simviation only, since 7:30 this morning, (12 hours so far), with no annoying pop-ups in the background.... 8)...!

Cheers...

Guys. From reading Craig's original topic carefully he suspects the spyware or whatever is causing these pop-ups came from the guitar site - NOT Simviation. Once these things are on your system it doesn't matter which sites you subsequently visit. I recommend trying AdAware as has been suggested. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
It's also possible this could be a virus which should be picked up by a scan with anti-virus software.

PS. I've just visited the site Craig mentioned. I notice it offers free software for download. It's quite possible one of these programs is the cause of the problem. This is a well known marketing ploy. On the other hand, the site might be completely blameless. This could have come via e-mail or some other source.

with the help of one of my friends I might have solved the problem, but somehow I just don't trust my computer anymore. I tried an anti-virus scan which came up with nothing, and tried ad-aware twice, got rid of a few unwelcome guests Grin. But how can I know if it is gone?
Also am I right in thinking the browser security settings are controlled from: explorer, tools, internet options?
if so I have no security tab, only General, content, connections and programs ???

I think they are from an ad on the home
page for  'singles' the ad is gone now
but thats when it all started,
If you open"cookies" there are
a bunch of default cookie files
if you check they are the poppers
we're getting, just delete all of them!!
when they come back do it agin
"clear cookies" will not delete
"default" cookie files, but they are not
good for anything so get ride of them

I dont get a lot of ads cause i got Norton Internet Security and man is it an ad-killer. I still get some from time to time but nothing very bad. I think McAfee or Norton might have an internet security demo, go to their site to check it out.

Free surfer is the best free pop-up killer. If anything gets past it and anoys you, you can set ti so the ISP its sent from is blocked. Smiley
Perhaps getting a (better) firewall too, Zone Alarm is good, and free Smiley

Thanks Maccers. Not that I'm bothered by the problem myself but this looks well worth trying.  Wink
The alternative would be to use Opera for browsing instead of IE & forget about pop-ups for good. http://www.opera.com/

I've never seen a single pop-up while using Opera. It's reckoned to be the most secure browser available. http://www.opera.com/support/service/security/

Andrew. There are freeware versions of all security software mentioned in this thread, including the Opera browser. Check out the links.

Zone Alarm might not fix your problem but it's well worth installing. IMHO

Just to confirm - simviation only uses a single pop-under on the main page. Once you close it that should be the end of it for that session.

& please remember simviation depends on this. The ads are non invasive, no spyware & very carefully controlled for content.

Please just think about that for a moment ....

I do use WinXP, but to enable/disable the firewall, you have to disconnect and then re-connect. I also like to fly FS2002 online, and if I remember right, it works better if I disable the WinXP firewall.

Craig. First of all I'm glad you seem to have fixed the problem. I think some confusion arose from people misreading your original topic which sent the thread off track. Can you please confirm that "this site" referred to in this quote is the guitar tab site & NOT Simviation. Quote:
ps. this has never happened before from this site, I've been using it for over a year and its never given me any trouble

For the sake of Pete's sanity I'll try to clear this up once & for all. I've been visiting Simviation almost every day for longer than I care to think about, long before this forum existed. Despite my comments on Opera I prefer IE. It's quicker for me & I use it 99% of the time. I find pop-ups annoying in general but most are quite harmless. The pop-under Pete mentioned as used by Simviation is the least offensive type & never bothered me. I run no special security software while online apart from Zone Alarm & of course Norton Anti-Virus. I run Ad-aware or similar anti-spyware utility before I shut down.

Anyone who's visited a warez or porn site, either intentionally or by accident, will be familiar with the pop-ups Craig is talking about. These will multiply faster than you can shut them down. Clicking on one makes 2 more appear. Some display full screen with no obvious way to remove them. I'm not sure quite what triggers them or how they work. They're a darned nuisance but comparatively harmless. I'm sure they do no permanent damage to your system.

I think clearing your History & Temp Internet files +  running Ad-aware should remove the problem. Also check your Favourites list for links you didn't bookmark This is another "favourite" trick of the scoundrels who do this sort of thing.

I realise that simV is blameless but the way it was working was to open on those pages visited most, for example it was taking longer and longer for me to be able to access this thread, same goes for http://www.biohazcentral.com/ (SFP1 site). Also by "this site" I was refering to guitar one.

I assume you are refering to flightsim.com
I have noticed that it seems that the pop-up are heavier at differant times of the day. Kind of like TV commercials. the amount and type vary by the time of the day

I have been off work for the past month due to a back injury so I have seen the commercials during the day. If you are watching any "Judge whoever", The Maury who's my daddy Povich Show", or the best "Jerry Springer" the commercials are mostly for Lawyers, and some kind of tech school. During Soap Opreas, its women prodects.

Advertisers obviously cater for the typical audience at the time their products are shown. Most ads during the F1 Grand Prix are for cars or accessories. There wouldn't be much point in advertising household goods.  Wink

i still wish F1 had stayed with the BBC those ad breaks ruin F1, by any chance is it on a broadcast delay of say 5 mins or so, just incase they were to goto an ad break and something major happens, because it if was real time live your gonna miss out some pretty important points of the race, i havent been able to catch a race in full in a long time due to other commitments on a sunday so someone else may know this one

i still wish F1 had stayed with the BBC those ad breaks ruin F1, by any chance is it on a broadcast delay of say 5 mins or so, just incase they were to goto an ad break and something major happens, because it if was real time live your gonna miss out some pretty important points of the race, i havent been able to catch a race in full in a long time due to other commitments on a sunday so someone else may know this one

I agree. The ITV commentators make a point of telling us we won't miss anything important. I'm not convinced this is true during a live broadcast. They most likely record the complete race for edited highlights. Even then it's not certain you would see specific incidents. Whichever channel it's on, the director is at the mercy of the broadcasting company of the home nation.

I've been using a freeware pop-up blocker called stop-the-pop-up from http://sureshot.sureshot.xaviermedia.net/stopthepop/ for quite a while, this thing doesn't let anything through unless you hold your ctrl key, I recommend it.
You can configure it a little, but for free you can't beat it.

Well, flippin' well...
This is a first for me today....
Just got the usual junk mail,  re: the dreaded "Viagra", on Outlook Express, but this time it was different, the senders address was completely blank...
A right click to bring up properties for the address found nothing.
And because of that I couldn't even Block it, or create a Message Rule for it....!!
Things are getting really dangerous now, when you can't even find who is sending you mail...!!
...no IP address...!
These annoying buggers are resorting to some dubious tricks now to hide themselves from us...!
GGrrrrr.....!!

Cheers...
Paul.

Regarding Spam it's worth checking this site out
http://www.nonags.asi.fr/emas.html

& this

Another point: Spammers can tell if you've received the mail - & therefore you can be logged as a valid email address - I use a POP3 email checker that allows you to view mail before you download it & you can delete the unwanted stuff. There are several of these available & I've found it has considerably reduced my spam ...
