That's not so bad. We had to do 40 hours of community service to graduate from High School.
I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday.

Remember that you were one of those dumb little first graders once
Where are you at? What country/state/place reqiures community service? Its a great idea though. I think if every kid had to do community service, we wouldnt have all the problems we have today

Yep, and thats still the rule. 10 hours for 6th and 7th, 20 for 8th and then it goes up to 40 or more. I think in my are its now 50.

Nowadays 'comunity service' is understood to be taking care of your neighbors baby, not recycling and growin trees..
I know some schools offer comunity service hours for helping a school-based group to grow trees and such and for sending your parents to donate blood. Then again, some people just lie about their actions

When I was at school we did a work experience week, and as I was an Air Cadet I got to do mine on an RAF base working with helicopter groundcrew (no chance of an aircrew job!), but after each heli had been worked on it had to go for a test flight, so I logged about 30 hours of flying in Chinooks and Pumas on this, and loved it. Other people were working in offices and shops, and I was buzzing around England in a chopper

Community Service has a different meaning here in England...
...
If you burgle my house in the middle of the night, remove my belongings, and the police find you, (which normally is very unlikely), you appear before the Magistrate, who has the choice of sending you to prison, therefore putting you in a two-man cell with a very large African gentleman, a bucket in the corner for your ablutions, and feeding you once a day on watery porridge....
...
OR...
The alternative is, the Magistrate, whilst smiling lovingly at you, will give you COMMUNITY SERVICE, which means you live at home, and get taken out during the day, after a nice egg and bacon breakfast, to cut the grass and plant pretty flowers on roundabouts...
You also go home every night to Mums nice cooking, and get into your cosy, warm bed and cuddle your teddy bear...
...
Sometimes the authorities affix a cool little tag to your ankle which emits a radio signal to the authorities to let them know exactly where you are, (a bit like radar), with which you can impress all your mates.... 8)...
Cheers...
Paul.
(England).
P.S. ...by the way, the villain has a very nice time, thank you very much, and the victims very rarely get their property returned...
...
So much for Community Service...!

LMAO Fozzer old mate. You have a unique talent for hitting the nail squarely on the head.
Ever thought of standing for magistrate or is that "honour" reserved for the chosen few? ???

Katana. Apart from humiliating yourself by asking for money I fail to understand how this made you suffer or lose your dignity. I would think the whole purpose of this "community service" is to teach you something about helping people by your own efforts. It seems this idea is doomed to failure & just as crazy as the rest of them.
PS. As Fozzer points out, in our country Community Service is seen as a punishment (some punishment
) & nothing to be proud of or boast about.

well that's not as bad as me!
i'm doing the international baccalaureate.. so we have to do a minimum of 150 hours of service
i did 230
over 1.5 years.. beat that
and in answer to OZ...
community service here is not taking care of the neighbours baby 8)..
and we can't lie about it coz it's supervised by teachers.. we have to visit mental institutions, and elderly houses as well as sponsor an aid group overseas (in my case i helped an organisation in cambodia).. i even went there to build houses for them
it might not sound like fun.. but at the end of the day, it;s rewarding

I know its not taking care of a baby, im just saying that some
other people
that are too lazy to do it think it is. And sometimes the activities are not supervised by teachers but by any other adult person who knows you did the work. Helping out the community is a great thing (even if its a pain..) cause your improving the place you live in in some little way.

Fozzer you should be a magistrate, you could wear your leathers (like Judge Dread) and announce things like "I am the LAW!"
And then you could sentence bike theives to really fun community service such as cleaning out the pits in the local sewage farm so they know exactly what they are. Personally I liked the old Roman technique for thieves, tie an ox to each limb and make them head off in 4 different directions. Ouch.
Maybe we could do a modern version with Mr. Hondas machines?
