Interesting isn't it...

GENEVA (Reuters) - Traffic kills four times as many people as wars and far more people commit suicide than are murdered, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Monday.
In two reports on injuries, both accidental and deliberate, the United Nations agency said they killed more than five million people in 2000, one tenth of the global death toll.
Nearly 90 percent of injury-related deaths took place in poorer countries.
Road deaths, totaling 1.26 million, claimed the highest number of victims, followed by suicide at 815,000 and interpersonal violence at 520,000.
Wars and conflict ranked sixth -- between poisoning and falls -- with 310,000 deaths.
WHO said age, sex, geographical region and income level all played a part in the distribution and incidence of fatal injuries.
Such fatalities were twice as prevalent among men as women, the reports said. Three times as many men, for example, died in road traffic accidents as women. And men were also three times as likely to be murdered.
Death rates from road accidents, burns and drowning were particularly high in Africa and Asia, and homicides were three times as frequent as suicides in Africa and the Americas.
But in Europe and southeast Asia suicide rates were more than double murder rates.

Forget the obvious question (why are these statistics being studied in the first place ?)(you can add any tiny "qualifcation" to any criterea and come up with "results" you want)..
The real question is: Why would the results be released in a way that labels private automobile ownership right up there with war and suicide ?
It wouldn't be, maybe, that the WHO has an "agenda" ?..Would it ?

Cheery fellow, aren't you Andrew! Such fatalistic posts!
Well, ultimately life itself is the most lethal.....nobody gets out of it alive!!

Maybe to show you that war isn't even the leading cause of deaths.
All those anti-war protesters should probably have rallied for better traffic safety instead of protesting the war. (And i'm not trying to start a fight,it's just an observation)

I hate statistics. They prove nothing. As Brett points out, the same stats can be interpreted in countless different ways depending on the hidden agenda of the interpreters.
As an aside, how come our wonderful TV weather forecasters can get it wrong in so many different ways? They're all working from exactly the same data provided by the Met Office. Makes you wonder if they each have their own hidden agenda. LOL

I think it was J. Stalin (Or Marilyn Manson
) who said
"The death of one is a tragedy, the death of a million is a statistic".

A great man once said "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics." You can bend and play with stats so they work on your side. Cars kill many though because there drivers don't pay attention. I've seen some interesting things. I got cut off by a school bus once, believe it or not.
I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday.

As Andrew points out, what this all really means is that before everyone devotes so much time, effort, money and resourses (not to mention passion) working towards an end to war, we really need to first devote all these things to:
1. The road toll (car safety, driver ability and attitude, road conditions etc).
2. Depression (and other mental illness) along with the stress and emotional pain involved in normal living.
3. Anger management, conflict resolution, domestic violence and general violent crime.
4. Access and handling of poisons and education regarding their use and storage.
5. Some other unmentioned accidental or deliberate cause of death (maybe some suggestions as to what it may be?)
Ahh! Now we can finally devote the relevan t amount of resources to war and the horror which surrounds it.
After all, if we are to treat the "culprits" of mortality in an order befitting their contribution to the "attrition" of our race, we must first deal with the five highest causes.
That is of course, if the figures are in any way accurate.
Like you said Andrew, INTERESTING!
I love statistics. Especially those which are based on the "law of averages" (which many statistical studies can be, at least in part).
You see, the law of averages states that if you have one foot in freezing water and one foot in boiling water.................you should be comfortable!..........?

(Before i start i'd like to say i've been on the booze, os this may explain what im abvout to say LOL
).
Does this statistic only count towards soldiers killed in action? I'm starting to think that this statistic is flawed. Find me a majpr war in the last century that was not started by mass murder and genocide. WWII, Gulf War's I & II (both becauyse of WOMA, and one becasuse of invasion, but Sadam has been killing inocent civilians.) Kosovo, Vietnam, Korea. If you take the casulites before each war started, or of non-combatants. Than the statsitcs will start to be majorly biased towards the other side.
Read it while you can, sometime tomorrow it will probably be deleted by me! 8) lol
