& please remember - someone has to pay for this so please respect that large downloads cost & you aren't paying....

As ever - only download what you really want - otherwise you're acting against the interests of this hobby..

Why would anyone want the very largest files anyway? Some of those things rake havoc with your framerates, unless you have an exceptional PC.

Hmmm

Thing is you don't know what you've got til you've tried it.

In my monster US fast cable session I ended up downloading 3 CDs (that's 1950 MB!) of stuff - scenery, aircraft and panels. And I went out of my way to find the big downloads, like mesh scenery and stuff that I normally can't touch with my dial-up.

I've installed a h*ll of a lot of it and on the whole I've been amazed by how much it's added to my sim and my enjoyment of it. After all, designers don't go out of their way to work for months creating monster packages unless it's gonna be worth it!

I'm now running out of hd space (I've only got a 40GB drive) and I accept I'll have to go to 60GB. I've got a 1.75GHz CPU and I also accept that I'll need to go up to at least between 2 - 3 GHz. But this is my main hobby - one of my few real, harmless pleasures in life.

So isn't it worth it? I don't smoke(!!) I don't drink a lot (!!) and my wife won't let me spend my money on loose women. So I say, to h*ll with it. When the time comes I'll upgrade (and it'll be soon I guess) and I'll pass my machine on to one of you poor b*st*rds who wants to fly around all day with all your sliders turned right down  Wink Smiley Cheesy Grin

BTW - just so I don't get hate emails, the last comment IS a joke........

Yes, totally respect the fact that hosting costs money and I wouldn't leech for the sake of leeching but some DLs I just can't touch on dial up because of their size.

I would have missed out on so much if I hadn't got the Falcon mentioned above, what a fantastic add on aircraft which you couldn't tell from just a description, downloading is sometimes the only way to evaluate an add on.

I just got the Falcon myself. It's on it's maiden flight as I type this. Had a little problem with the patch (had to reinstall it a second time) but it's working great now. I fell in love with the plane the second I saw the amazing detail of the cabin and the walkthrough is my favorite part of the package.

By the way, I downloaded it on dialup. It only took about 28 minutes using Fresh Download. It's a freeware (no spyware or advertisements) utility. I've had good performance from it so far.

There is a pattern - it's all very high quality stuff.
Do I need it all? I don't know until I try it. It'll keep me occupied for many months - I doubt whether I'll need to download anything much for ages.
Is it a bit random? Yes to some extent. There's stuff there that I'd never thought about until I saw it that'll take me into new simming areas (Turkey? Costa Rica? French West Indies? Dominican Republic? even Finland).

And my simming experience will be all the richer for it. And therein lies the justification.

Roger

BTW - the cost was mentioned.

We all know that we can't pay directly in monetary terms. What we can do is give something back to the hobby itself - and that's what I continue trying to do with painting and scenery design. I'd encourage everyone to do the same. There can never be enough good quality freeware - we all know that. So have a ago yourself. Who knows - you might turn out to be the next Chuck Dome!
