Where I live, during certain times of the year, deer run acrossed the road like you wouldn't believe. Consequently, a lot of people hit deer.

My grandparents have lived in this area about 30 years and they have hit so many animals while driving, it's amazing. They have hit over a dozen deer between the two of them, once my grandfather hit 2 at once. my grandmother has even hit a couple moose Shocked. My grandfather has ran over dogs, hit horses, and once even ran over a baby bear!

last Sunday, the rest of my family drove to Spokane early in the morning. My brother has been working on his driving permit so he was driving at the time. About 5 minutes after leaving home, a deer ran out in front of him with out warning. My brother wasn't able to miss him, but was able to slow down a little. He hit the deer going about 45 miles and hour, killing the deer, and doing around $2,000 dollars worth of damage to the Explorer. luckily, the insurance is covering almost all of it.

ironically, our mechanic told my mom that there were 3 other people that day who hit a deer also. That night as I was coming home from work, a deer ran out in front of me, but luckily was just far enough out that I didn't hit him.

How about all of you? Is anyone here roadside aces like my grandparents? Grin

In my time I've taken out a deer, a remarkable number of rabbits, and a few birds!
My uncle once hit a cow, that destroyed the front of his Land Rover (he was motoring!). But otherwise no.

Mark you are a deer behind me ....I only need three more to become an ace on that particular type.....insurance write-off on both of them too......On an interesting side note though, on a major hwy (401) in Ontario, if you travel west from Toronto to Detroit, you will come to the city of Windsor on the Canadian side of the border with the US......as you drive into the early part of that city and on the main roadway, you will pass a little restaurant, called the Roadkill Cafe......Honest.....someone actually named their place with that name..........I didn't have the time or nerve just to go in and look at the menu, but I guess I should have

Hi Dave... Wink...!

As a frantic biker, hitting or running over furry/hairy  animals*, or feathered birds is my biggest worry, especially at night when they all come out to greet me....!
Hitting a little bunny rabbit whilst banked over in a corner is sure to lead to lots of pain, (for me), a broken bike, and rabbit food for the fox.... Tongue
And as for hitting a deer, (there are lots of them around here), that is sure to lead to certain death, (for me), and venison for the next motorist who passes by... Tongue...!
LOL...LOL...LOL...!

Cheers all... Grin...!

Well one of our school minibusses hit a deer once. It went straight under the bus and got stuck under the car behind. It took the teachers 1/2 and hour to get it out!

Hi Maccers...!
Make sure your steering is not out of alignment now...!
Even a little tap of the kerb with the front wheel(s) will affect the steering, you will notice it in un-even tyre wear and heavy steering.
If the garage fitters replaced the wheels due to damage, they should also have checked the wheel alignment.
...blimey...you haven't had this car more than five minutes and here you are running into stationary kerbs...
Whatever next... Grin...!

Funny thing about English law is that if you stop after hitting a pheasant and pick up the corpse to eat it, it is considered poaching!  If you pick up a pheasant that has been killed by someone else it isn't.  This used to result in my brother and I going out in one car and some mates in another, we would then desparately try to hit pheasants LOL.  It was fun at the time honest.........

Moose are a problem in Northern Ontario. Apparently it's like driving into a brick wall if you hit a moose. Funny thing is that the Natives will actually drag the carcus off the road and cook it up. True story.

In a car, I have hit a deer. Served it right. It was in my way. It had absolutely no right to be on the sidewalk.

Andrew,
I live in Federal Way and over the past ten years its become pretty "urbanized", but you'ld be surprised at the number of possums and skunks that get flatten on the main drag around here!!  Its just goes to show you how wild life continues to survive, even in the city.

its still better than hitting another car, which has already happened to people i know who have been driving as long as me. Undecided
Scratches, dents, big cave-ins, etc. out of a group of 10, only 3 of us have no visible damage or anything serious happen (i dont count 2 hrs stationary and fully driveably stright after serious Smiley)
Its definatly a lot better than going out on your first drive after passing, taking your girlfriend along, crashing and having her leg amputated Shocked which happened to my boss's oldest.

I have only had one road kill. I was driving about 75-80mph when a duck crosses my path. The duck "exploded" when he hit my windshield. but the windshield  never broke or cracked. That in it self is amazing considering the white tail deer population here. I have had many near hits.

While on vacation with my cousins in Maine I was driving along nice an comfortable. Then all hell breaks loose. An Explorer comes over the hill infront of me, going 70 on a country road (complete idiot). Out of the blue this deer comes out behind me right when the guy is about to pass me. BANG! Well I stopped to check on the guy, he had a broken arm so I called an ambulance. He was LUCKY. The entire engine block was destroyed, and the passenger side was, well lets say no longer existed.

A while ago I was in Australia for a year, and you get roadkill galore out there. I hit snakes (boink.....boink), broke the windscreen hitting a parot (thnk god they are laminated!), but by far the worst was *almost* hitting a herd of cows at night, 200km's from anywhere. I was doing 110Kph (about 68mph) and saw them at the last minute.  I stood on the brakes, and we stopped about 10 feet short. I filled my slacks that's for sure.  Shocked

You see some pretty terrible things on the highways out there. Even the roadtrains (Big-Rigs with 5-7 trailers on the back) get flipped when they hit herds of cattle and Kangaroos.

Probably the best roadkill I've had in my native England was a pheasant, which I hit at about 100Mph, out in the country. It just atomised on impact, and I had to SCRUB it's remains from the front of my car. Messy.  Roll Eyes

I once hit a sheep on my pushbike, but that's a different story!
