Can't they teach him how to pronounce "nuclear"?
I cringe every time I hear him say nuc-u-lar.
(I'm not anti-Bush, in fact I voted for him. Jimmy Carter had the same impediment despite the fact that he had a degree from the USNA in
nuclear physics
! It just annoys the %$(& out of me.)

Dave, please forgive me. I acted out of frustration, which is no excuse so I've edited my post.
I didn't mean anything, but should have realized that I would start another political flame war.
once again, sorry about that....

Don't bash his Southern accent, it's not his fault. Trev that truly wasn't a nice thing to say
. (He flew 1/3 of the way out to the boat so HA!) But besides that this is the first president to "trap" aboard an aircraft carrier. I'm sure the pilot was either the airwings CAG (Carrier Air Group Commander) or the S-3B's Viking squadrons CO. The squadron was VS-35 "Blue Wolves", and president Bush didnt fly F-4's, he flew F-102's for the Texas ANG. He wanted to fly in an F/A-18 Hornet but the Secret Service said no because there would be no room for a Secret Service agent.
Here's some facts about the Lincoln's latest deployment, she has been at sea for 10 months.
FACTS ABOUT THE USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN
Builder: Newport News Shipbuilding Co., Newport News, Virginia
Power Plant: Two nuclear reactors, four shafts
Length: 1,092 feet
Width: 252 feet
Speed: 30+ knots (34.5+ mph)
Takeoffs and Traps: 12,675
Sorties: 16,500
42,107 gallons of Milk were consumed
27,275 pounds of steak were consumed
29,000 pounds of hamburger consumed
2,403 gallons of ice cream consumed
227 root canals performed!!!
Neat photo of the S-3B's tail camera for refueling.

Check this out:
Quote:
Bush had left from Naval Air Station North Island (San Diego) after being brought there from Washington via Air Force One. Just before he left for the carrier, Bush was briefed on what he would have to do to eject in case of emergency.
Officials also told CNN that in preparation for the flight, Bush underwent water survival training, which involves sitting in a simulated cockpit that fills up with water, then spins around, while the person inside has to escape and come up for air. To pilots, the training is known as "panic in a can."

Since GWB flew 1/3 of the way to the carrier do you think he can add that to his flight log?

AS for the word "nuclear" I think most of the U.S. pronounces it wrong.

(Captain Queeg removes the steel balls from his pocket and he spins them in his palm insistently as he speaks.)
Ah, but the strawberries! That's where I had them. They laughed at me and made jokes, but I proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, and with geometric logic, that a duplicate key to the wardroom icebox did exist! And I'd have produced that key if they hadn't pulled Caine out of action! I-I-I know now they were only trying to protect some fellow officer and!.....

he wanted a F-18 but he got a S-3
The secret service kept him from having been catapult-launched, and he was angry about that...
still he has a reason to be jealous: Putin flew a Su-30, which is a fighter-bomber, not a ASW aircraft

what i find funny is the whole secret service person having to be there. what use would he or she be if there was a problem with the plane? and arnt there some hornets with two seat two controls? where the RIO can actually fly it if there is a problem with the pilot. And in some ways being in that bigger plane would have meant alot more trouble with a bail out wouldnt it as they dont have ejection seats?? and have to jump out the door, correct me if i am wrong here

Right then.........For all of those out there that seem to think that i was bashing Mr Bush jnr, i would like to offer my apologies.
I personally think he is ok as a president and he is doing a pretty impressive job.
The comments were meant 100% as a joke.
Obviously some people didnt take it the way it was meant, i'm sorry.
On British TV, when he was 'elected', they made quite a thing of an interview where he was asked to name countries and other world leaders, nearly every answer was 'er, dont know'.
He may be the 1st President to 'trap' a landing, but his old man i believe used to do it all the time in an TB-5M Avenger.
Once again for the benefit of Oso, Jaffa, Blade and any others that i may have offended, I'm sorry.

Actualy.... The S-3B has 4 ejection seats. 2 up front for the pilot and Tactical officer and 2 in back for the sensor operators. I can see why they picked the S-3 because of the aformentioned USSS officer that must be with the president at all times. if he flew in on the COD (C-3 Greyhound, freighter version of the hawkeye) there is no provision for bailout.
As to the saying that he was AWOL... I think that roumor came out of someone (political oppenent) saying his connections got him out of Vietnam duty. Actualy the Texas Air Guard at that time was an Air Defence unit flying interceptors. The F-102 was tasked to provide continental air defence so I doubt that he missed vietnam duty since only one squadron of F-102's was ever posted to vietnam and it was a regular air force unit. Durring Vietnam most of the air defence duties were shifted to the air guard to free up regular air force planes and personel for combat in SE Asia.

THe two-seat Hornets have dual controls so if there was a problem the Pres. could fly it. But landing it would be another problem. Being 15 some years since piloting a fighter, let alone one as advanced as the F/A-18, he would likely eject than attempt to land it.
