I am going have a poll on this but they really do rock.
Kashmir is THE GREATEST SONG EVER along with Travelling Riverside Blues.
Vote yes or no and if you say know tell who you think is better and it has to be a rock group no younger than 1990.

I do like Led Zeppelin. They were pretty much Kings when I was "stomping around", but to say "the best Rock group ever" well.......................a bit too far.
The Beatles of course would, for many reasons, have to be the overall owners of that title, but like all things, music is very much a matter of taste.
As for LZ's best song, it would have to be something off th "4" album. Stairway.....but not rock as such. Battle For Evermore.....again not rock as such. I think "Rock'N'Roll".
My vote for the best "Heavy Rock" band must go to "Deep Purple".
P.S. The original term is "Heavy Rock" - "Heavy Metal" is a distortion bought about by groups (and fans) of the '80's and '90's to, for some reason, separate their "music" from that of their parents.
Who is the lead singer of "Poison" trying to be, anyway.
Me thinks a cheap copy of Robert Plant.
(now I have to sit back and wait for the deluge)

Depends what you mean by "Rock" group. I always thought the Rolling Stones held that particular title. As Brensec points out, Led Zeppelin fit the Heavy Rock or Heavy Metal category.
Were the Beatles a rock group? Maybe they were in the early days when their music would be more accurately described as Rhythm & Blues. Some of their stuff is pure pop. I'm not sure which category their later efforts fit into. ???
This topic makes me wonder where all the young talent is. Most of these guys you're all raving about are my age or older. I bet this will make the fur fly. LOL
PS. I always liked The Who. The sight of the mad Moon in full flow was a wonder to behold.
This man was arguably the finest bass guitarist in the world. He will be sadly missed.

Hagar,
Your question regarding the Beatles being a rock group is, unfortunately, the impression many people have.
They were best known for their "Popular" music, some of which was pure rock and roll, but also there was the pure "pop".
As for their later music, indeed all their music, the majority (90% or more) is on albums, that some people may never have heard, or if they did, not realised who it was.
Take it from someone who has played their music on and off stage for years. They were foremost and always a "Rock and Roll" band.
P.S. The "distorted" or "overdriven" electric guitar that epitomises the sound of "Heavy Rock" was first used in a song called "I Feel Fine" in 1964.
There are many little known facts such as this, that illustrate how much is owed to these boys (and GM) and their pioneering spirits.
P.P.S. I like The Who and love the album "Who's Next".
First song - "Bad Man". Really a beautiful song.

Brensec. You are not alone. I was in a Rock & Roll group all through the 60s & although we never had their success or songwriting talent we were contemporaries of "bands" like the Beatles & Rolling Stones.
I have every Beatles single & album ever published in this country. As you say, they were originally a rock & roll group. This was later more popularly known as R & B. What the music they (or more correctly George Martin) produced after they gave up live perfomances would be described as is anyone's guess. I never liked categories myself. It's all music to me.

The Who. 30+ years and still going strong. Concert for NYC sounds as good as anything recent.
Pink Floyd and Led Zep were great in their time but their music would not evolve. The Who went from bubble gummy pop in the early 60's to the first rock opera in the late 60's to Woodstock to Who's Next (the one with all the synthesizers and Baba O'Riley, popularly known as Teenage Wasteland) to Quadrophenia to a couple of decent albums in the 80's.
OK, they have spent the last 10 years just rehashing the old stuff and getting busted for child porn, and who wants to hear 50 year old guys singing "hope I die before I get old" but Won't Get Fooled Again and Teenage Wasteland have got to be on everyone's top 10 list.

T of C,
As we have all said in this post and many others, everyone has there own private taste, and most things (particularly entertainment) are a matter of taste.
That's why I would never go so for as to criticise someone over their choice of attire, car, food or music.
So I won't.
I am glad for you in seeing your favourite group live.
I have seen many, many live performances by nobodies and international talents, but I've never seen a live Beatle. So good luck to you.

If you listen to Pink Floyd's tracks in the 60's and compare them to what they did in the 80's you will realise that the music has evolved hugely. Especially with the departure of Sid Barrat and the incomming of David Gilmour.

Seeing a few comments regarding individuals who are considered the "best" with their particular instrument.
I have to add my tuppence worth.
Deep Purple (the most successful and I think the No 3 outfit) of Gillan, Blackmore, Lord, Paice and Glover must be considered as the single most "multi-talented" groups ever to have graced the earth. My analysis may be common knowledge with some and unknown to others, but it goes like this.
(Once again, many aspects of talent are a matter of taste, but there is also plain "raw ability").
Ian Gillan - If none of his DP work makes your grade (which much of it should) check his vocals on the "all star" British recording of JC Superstar. As an ex-professional vocalist, I know no other "rock' voice which can compare.
Ritchie Blackmore - Considered by, not only critics, but by his peers, as one of the most talented and versatile R & B/Rock/Blues guitarists of his time (and probably others).
Listen to the solo on "Place in Line" on the "Who Do We Think We Are" album. It contains every conceivable style of modern guitar picking I can imagine.
Ian Paice - What can you say about the man that the professionals went to lessons for?
John Lord - Classically trained and accomplished pianist before he even saw a Hammond.
Roger Glover - Alas, I don't know much about Roger. I can't say I have read or recall any accolades or complimentary accounts by his peers or critics, but to be in such company, he just had to be pretty good, I reckon.
