USA Terrain Mesh or not to be? (Read 601 times)

I have been eyeballing the USA terrain mesh in the Simviation downloads section for FS2K.

Considering that it is at least 50 pretty big files - that will be a chore downloading and installing, even with broadband.

So, I was wondering - any one here got it? Is it an improvement? Worth the effort, or the big hit to framerates?

Dunno - but I got the huge Alaska and Canadian Rockies meshes last week and can't wait to try em.

As the ones you mention are the best available for the US you've just gotta go for it from my experience of mesh so far

I downloaded the section for Colorado, thought I would try out one section first - I am very familiar with the terrain there.

Well it says it is for 2000 and 2k. The instructions are for 2000. The file structure seems to be different enough to render the directions unusable.

Anyone care to give this poor old dummy some help here.

OK, don't know this exact software but this is the usual way for terrain mesh which usually only consists of bgl files

Create a folder in your ..\FS2002\SCENEDB folder for the scenery

eg

...\FS2002\SCENEDB\usamesh\scenery

Then extract the bgl file(s) into it.

Start FS2002 and go to Scenery Library either through Settings in your welcome screne or through World in the FS2002 menu you get from hitting Alt while running FS2002.

Activate the scenery in the usual way by browsing the path to the 'usamesh' sub folder mentioned above.

That's all! Enjoy it and let us know how you get on, pref with some screen shots.

Didn't work.

Either it goes somewhere else or the path isn't right from me doing something wrong.

Thanks for the help though.

Anyone got any other ideas?

I have downloaded every sector available for the USA.  I like it a whole lot better than the default.  In my opinion it is worth a download.  If you are able to find someone that has a cable or DSL line, it will make your life a lot easier than a 56K.

I installed the mesh by using the SCENERY folder in the ADDON SCENERY.  Don't have to bother going into scenery library...etc....

Some meshes won't work by doing this, but the USA stuff seemed to be fine for me....

Thanks for the advice Codered - it is getting closer. There are actually Rocky Mountains now. And the frame rate hit was not too bad - busiest graphics in the mountains took me down to about 13-15 fps and I just have a Radeon 7200 card and an AMD Duron 900. with a little over 500 megs DDR.

The size of the download does not intimidate me. I am blessed with a RoadRunner connection that can give me a little over 2 megs a second on a download if the server can do it.

Well I think I have found my problem!!!!

...

Now - if someone could just tell me how to fix it.

I put the files where Codered suggested - they work now. But I keep getting messages during flight that say "Object not found, some buildings may not load etc etc".

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\FS2002\ADDON SCENERY\SCENERY\Pikes Peak\SCENERY\

That is where i put 'em.

Hep me! Please!

Remove the Pikes Scenery folder from FS2002\ADDON SCENERY\SCENERY\. Cut all the files out of the Pikes Scenery\scenery folder and paste them into FS2002\ADDON SCENERY\SCENERY\.

That should sort it out.

FSTipster - Thank you - Every thing is beautiful and works great after I did it your way - but - when I fly over a city I keep getting game pauses with a screen saying an item couldn't be found and some buildings may not load - etc etc.

I will post some screenies tomorrow of a little trip I took across the Rockies - I got stopped 13 times crossing Denver but after that it was smooth sailing.

It sounds as though all the files are still not where they should be. Was there a texture folder? If so, in the case of the way you have that scenery set up, it's contents would need to be in the FS2002\ADDON SCENERY\TEXTURE folder - not inside any others.

Otherwise, if you're sure that all the files supplied for the scenery are now in the correct folder, you may be missing some generic add-on textures like Nova or Vodtex30. These are texture packs that are sometimes required to be downloaded separately. If they're needed it should say so in the readme file that came with the download.

Don't have all the probs worked out yet. I sure thank you for the help TIpster.

Here are some screenies for those that are interested in seeing what the mesh does for the Rockies.
