I've (kind of) made it a mission to have the flags of all four major nations of World War II, and if I'm feeling particularly zealous, maybe Russia too.
I'm just in wonder about just what those flags are. I have the German naval ensign, and the modern American flag. I know what the WW II American flag looks like (48 stars), but has the British flag changed any? And what do (did) the Russian and Japanese flags look like? I'm thinking the Japanese flag looks like what it does today, or the one with all the rays coming from the bottom.
The Devil's Advocate.

The German Flag was a black swastika in a white circle, surrounded by a red field
The Japanese flag was pretty much the same as today but had red "light beams" comming away from the red "rising sun" in the center.
The British flag was the same.
The Russian flag was the standard communist flag. Red background with a gold scycle with a hammer going through it was a single small gold star by the top of the scycle, these were in the top left.
French Flag remains the same.
Canadian flag was red with the union jack in the top left corner. It had the canadian coat of arms on the right side.
Italian flag same as today.

I believe the Japanese had a couple three. At least two of the three for sure.
All white with the red meatball in the center.
White with red meatball and red rays.
White with white circle and red rays.
And wasn't the German one still the double headed eagle - or the red one with the cross like in the game - the swasticker was for the Nazi party - at first anyway.

The German flag from 1933 onwards was the Swastika.
The one in CFS3 with a swastika instead of the iron cross was the navel ensign. In the first world war the austrian flag was the double headed eagle I think...
Oh and I have a Union Jack (From pre WWII) and a nice big Communist flag. It is my mission to put the Commie flag up a flag pole out side of my school.

The national flag was the "basic" Red Sun in a field of white. THe others - with the "rays" were "battle" flags.

Ok, thanks. I had a good idea of what they were, just needed some confirmation.
Germany: Had a good idea what the flag was, but thought it might've just been put up at Hitler's speeches only.
Britain: Little doubt.
Japan: Meatball, or meatball with rays?
Russia: Thought it looked like Red China's flag.
Good I could get that cleared up! But just so we're in accordance, this is what were all talking about?
On second thought, that Russian flag is really ugly. Think I'll save myself the 15 bucks.

I just knew I could get this question answered here quick. I've noticed that the Simviation forums always fumble over general topics (for example, what happened during the invasion of Poland), but should I ask any specific question (like "What role did Panzer Division 'blah blah' take during the invasion of Poland') it'd be answed in 60 pages! Just struck me as funny how the little things get discussed over. It's also scary that you guys can know so much detailed info on such a wide variety of topics! Namely Felix! Can we we ever ask a question he doesn't know the answer to!?

I have a book (one of the thousands) that deals with the Third Reich.
Of course the German national flag during the Nazi years was the plain swaztika type, however, the Germans apparently had a real fetish about flags.
There was one for almost every branch and unit of the Party. There would be at least 50 different flags listed for one organisation or another, ie the SA has theirs, SS had theirs, the Luftwaffe had theirs etc.
They all seem to be based either on the swaztika or the 'maltese' type cross, or both.
Here are the 'State Flag' and 'War Ensign' respectively:

I would suggest getting the russian flag. Its really cool. Just get one with a bigger hammer and sickle.
I really like that german battle ensign though. I might get one if I get the chance.
And Scorpion, there should be NO doubt on the british flag. Its been the Union Jack ever since the UK was founded which was about the same time as american history starts...

I think it's longer than that, isn't it?
My primary school history is a little rusty. I know it's a combination of the crosses of England (St george), Scotland (St Andrew) and Wales (St Who??).
As my grandfather used to say "it was way back when everyone was a Catholic".......lol
P.S. Aussie kids had to learn stuff like this in the '60's because we still liked Britain then..............lol. It wasn't just an island full of whinging Poms.

My apologies Crumbso. No real offense intended. I have used the term occasionally amongst my other English friends here and they understand that I mean no disrespect or animosity.
However, you are right, I should be mindful of the fact that there are more than the 5 or 6 English people that I know well enough to joke like this with, and not all of them know me as the inoffensive person I try to be.
I am sorry for the use of the offensive expression.

St. Andrews Cross for Scotland (White Saltair, Blue Field)
And St. Patricks Cross for Ireland (Red Saltaire, White field)
Wales is not included as it is a principality and not a Kingdom of the Union, which incidentaly was formed around 1742 long before the colonists in north america expressed independent thought...
And long after the reformation (16th Century)
As for Whining Poms, I've known enough aussies to get used to that one LOL.

Thanks Crumbso,
I didn't for a moment think you were being "snotty" or anything like that.
I was concerned that I had actually overstepped the mark and upset you, and you hadn't "cooled" enough to address the incident.
I'm glad to hear that wasn't the case, and that we're fine.
Thanks.
At the risk of upsetting a Frenchman or two. It does seem they weren't much of a help (compared to the efforts of the US, Briatain, USSR and yes, even Australia).
They did crumble pretty quickly.
However, let's not forget that out of all the occupied countries, France was at the forefront in Underground, Guerilla and Partisan fighting. In fact, the Normandy invasion would have been far more difficult and costly had it not been for their activities.

I'm not sure that that is a totally fair statement Brensec. In 1940 the only country that really understood the use of armour in modern warfare was Germany. Britain and France still felt that the best use of the Tank was to split them into "penny packets" and disperse them amongst the Infantry. Thus when the Germans forgot to attack the Maginot line and conviniently (for them at least) invaded through the Low Countries there was little in the way to stop them except for Infantry organised on WW1 lines.
If Britain had been attached to France by land this forum would (probably) have been discussing the fall of London three weeks after the fall of Paris.

You may well be right, Smokes. And probably are.
I don't mean to say that they didn't fight, or that they were by any means lacking in courage. After all, as you say, the British would have gone down in the same way, and did, to a degree if you consider the Expeditionary Force.
I think my bewilderment (admittedly with total hindsight) and frustration at the way in which the French allowed the Nazis to march into the Rhineland without so much as a protest, tends to get me thinking of WWII France as just "not having the stomach for it".
The Nazis were under very strict orders from Hitler himself to turn back if they met the slightest resistance.
They didn't come up against so much as one shot.
I often think what would have been had the French not been so desperate to avoid another war.
This was at a time when it is widely agreed that the French Army could have beaten off a German invasion. The German war machine at this time was still very much in its' infancy.
All this considered, I concede your point. They don't deserve what may have been misconstrued as scorn in my post.

The evils of appeasment. Hitler spelled his aims very clearly in his book Mein Kampf. It was all there for whoever wanted to read it but easier and politically safer for the leading politicians of the day to hope that the little Austrian Corporal would stop after each abuse of trust and power that he displayed.
30,000,000 lives were ruined because we sat on our 1930's butts and did precisely.........nowt.

I've seen the 30,000,000 figurealot. I don't think it takes into account the "sketchy" Russian figures of civilians.
Most of the authorative books and indeed the acclaimed "World at War" BBC series (the one narated by Lawence Olivier, put it at an even 50 million.
For the purpose of these discussions, though, 30 or 50 is academic.
I know, once again, my comments are made with "20/20 hindsight" but sometimes I get so very..................disappointed with those who were, not the "architects", but at least the "building permits department" of that terrible 5 years, 8 months and 1 week (Sept 1 - beginning of hostilities - to May 8 ) in Europe. I mean, those that allowed events to take place, that in any other place and time would not have been allowed to continue, at least not completely unchallenged.
I suppose Hitler or "fate (if you beleive in that philosophy) chose exactly the right time, place, people and climate.
In discussions, I often say to people, with occasional quizzical looks, that WWII was ordained to be, the day WWI finished. So much unfinished business. So much malice in the Armistice to be avenged. So many dead for nothing.
