I was wondering if anyone is interested in makeing the SimV dogfights a reality again. I remember how much fun they were before.
Sugesting this might have somthing to do with me searching throught the dead posts on the Screenshots fourm looking for a few pics for Space Ace's 'best CFS kill' topic. Grin Went through absolutely tones of pages and even went back as far as DTWD's fall-out sessions Grin
These were the two pics in question i was looking for.

Maccers, choose which CFS and post something. If the timing is good I'm on for a scrap.

I only got into the SimV dogfight a few weeks before it stopped. I got shot down loads, but really, really enjoyed it. I'd love to see it come back. CFS2 only though because I can't run CFS3.

I'll definitely be in on it. I only took part in two of the earlier ones and got the crap shot out of me.
(but I got my own back by ramming people on the runway)..........God I'm useless!

Can it be done with CFS1 - I'd like to give that a go.
I've never multi-played with that before. I like CFS1 better than 2.
But I'll defer to the majority, of course.

Let me know when.  Grin Grin Grin Wink

The timings for the fight will have to be discussed. We shall have to take into consideration the groups of people who will be taking part.

The only thing wrong with sunday night is that most will have either school or work to go to and therefore will not be able to attend too long if at all. It seems that saturday night gets in the way of peoples work also.

I would suggest either saturday or sunday afternoon. It's off peak so thats fine and no one should have work. The only problem then is timezones. I think it would be saturday morning for the americans and probably an unearthly hour in australia. So maybe in the early/mid evening of the week end?

We shall try to work somthing of a compromise for all the people who shall be withany luck taking part.

And it will be CFS2. Wink

Hi Maccers! Smiley

I'm still trying to repair that rather shot up Lancaster of mine, the service crew just ask me to avoid you if she ever manages to fly again!  Wink Grin

As most of you guys know, I'm not on-line (STILL!) due to my rather messed up home affairs.......

Anyway, I'll certainly be up for the old dogfight, just as soon as its up & running, I'll try to be there.

As Woodlouse says, Saturday is better for most, Sunday night for me isn't a realistic option, unless, I have yet another all nighter......... Roll Eyes

CFS3 on line isn't bad, I strongly say we keep the dogfight CFS2.

Paul.

For some reason I can't get CFS3 to work with Multiplayer, probably because of my slow internet connection.

CFS2 doesn't run well. It will exit's the game for no apparent reason???

Thanks very much! (j/k)  I know we're often forgotten about in terms of timing, but it's really very easy. Sydney is 10 hrs ahead of GMT Perth 12 hrs. (we're 2 hrs wide Grin)

Assuming you mean Saturday (US time), that's about 8 - 10 am Sunday in Sydney (depending on US east or west coast) and around 10 pm - Midnight GMT.

If it's all the same to everyone, why don't we, for the purpose of this exercise, all speak in "Simviation time". That way we are already converted and there will be no mistakes. (Just have to get the day right  Grin)

P.S. I'm not sure there are many people who have CFS3 running  fast enough to use online.  Embarrassed Cry

To play CFS3 online effectively you need a super-computer and broadband. If you don't have either then you get a slow connection and a really jumpy game. So we stick with CFS2 I'm afriad.

I'll try to catch Maccers or Scania on MSN at some point to arrange the finer points. When that is settled the details shall be posted and we'll see what happens.

The fights will be timed with GMT cause its simple that way.

Colicab, why don't you buy CFS2? Its only about £15 now that CFS3 is about and is great for Multiplayer.

Count me in gents.

CFS2 is, as you largely agree the king for online. I'm UK and Sunday evening is just perfect (for what it's worth).

Name the date and I'll be there, as a slowly moving target for all you pilots, of course.

I'll be the guy you see swimming in the Pacific every 30 seconds, I think there are sharks out there you know!

I would host CFS3, but so many people dont have the system to run it... and i definatly dont have the system to host a session. Roll Eyes
ADSL, 1.5 Ghz, 64Mb Geforce4 and 1Gb of RAM isnt really enough, next on the list is a GeForce4 FX5600 with 256Mb RAM Grin 8)
I'll try and be on MSN for the next few days if i can to organise a date.

I know we've been thru this before Woody, but I think the Hurricane (with its' sharp turn, without bleed-off) is the best for out manoeuvring anything.

Guess it won't be stock only then  Wink

Best get myself to the download section and get me something other than flying boats and twin engine soarers then.

My P40 from the 'Defence of Australia' will be well out of its depth as well!!  Cry

Well, it's almost as good looking as me so it is about time I got me a Spit to burn the English countryside with Grin

Well I experimented with a large amound ot aircraft in the dogfights and I found a Hurricane to be ineffective at getting behind someone. And in a turning match nothing beats a tigermoth! Grin

I use "Schuftie" as often as I'm in the Sim. I love the P40. In terms of the look, it's IMO, the best looking fighter to at least start the War. (I even like it over the Spit - for looks). It also turns sharper too, IMO. Just that lack of power.
I've often said that someone really should have spent more time in the early war, trying to get another engine, or a super charger into it.
I've read that the only reason it couldn't have one as standard fit, was the fact that every single one was needed for the P38's (2 per plane, of course) and there just weren't enough.
We have a P40 in the Australian War Memorial. And I keep one in the top left corner of all my posts......... Grin Grin Wink

...

P.S. As far as I know, there aren't any mods allowed in the SimV Dogfight, are there??  ???

I keep forgetting that CFS1 planes count as stock. I never had the game but I have downloaded the converted stock CFS1 planes for CFS2.

I'm fairly new to this FS thang (bought the game for myself last xmas) so I guess I'm playing catchup on most of the good stuff out there.

I'm about half way through 'Defense of Australia'. It's a wonderful compaign, I just made a horrible attempt at the two bomber intercept missions. I can bag 6 zero's but I get walloped but the bombers every time. I've generally emptied all my ammo into one and it's nothing more than smoking and spitting lead back.

I don't know how those real pilots did it against real lead that hurt and killed!

Brensec, where you from in Aus. I did a very quick 3 week trip around the main tourist route last year. Australia is a fantastic country and the best kept secret in the world.

Kevieb, you do not need to use stock aircraft in the dogfight. As far as I know (Woody will correct me) the only rules on planes are no mods and no jets.
There are some fantastic CFS2 Warbirds here at SimV. Download a few and try them out.

I assume then that by mods it is meant planes with 'bad' dp's etc so they can climb forever, turn on the spot and generally do unrealistic things rather then simply not stock?

As I said, fairly new to this so I guess I haven't got all the terminoligy right yet!!

I have downloaded several of the very good planes from here.
I have just got the excellent Mosquito's that went up in the last few days. My favourite plane as a kid and I wasn't disappointed. It looks amazing and sounds like heaven. This is the first plane I have seen with realistic glass, with reflection and everything. the vc looks fantstic but as the maker said it is a bugger to get of the runway. Took me 3 attempts and even then the runway was a thin line way out of the right window.

Not much use in a dogfight of course (no guns at all) but nothing will catch me. So 0 kills and 0 deaths.
I rarely break even in online ffa so for me that would be a result!!!

You can use any aircraft as long as it was in WWII. So you can Fly a 262 if you with to be a spoil sport. I must say though for those who may want to try a 262 I have a nice plane that can keep pace with it. So I'll be right on yer arse with 4 cannon. Grin

Any piston aircraft are allowed aslong as it is an actual real aircraft.

Those that want to be moving targets come in a nice big bomber. Give the rookies some practice and get blowen up for the cameras.

Also a good screenshot manager is a good. We like to laugh at your misfortunes at the receiving of a vast array of guns.

Its not too bad with a 56K. CFS2 only allows up to 8 players at a time to ping times are usually quite low. And when there not you rarely notice.

I've got a 1mb broard band so I don't mind hosting, I've done it a few times before. In fact I ended up hosting on my first ever SimV dogfight because Scannia had to go. I had no idea what I was doing and got stuck in the ready room for about half an hour because I didn't know that the host can't get out of the ready room until every one else comes back in!

Sydney, mate. Thank You, yes we do have a beautiful country. (Some interesting picks in one of my posts in the "Where are You From" post.

IMO, the secret (if there is one) to taking out the Betty is come in from the front or the top. I think there's a very accurate 20mm in the rear turret.
If you have a plane with 6 x .50 or cannon, go for recision shots on one wing. it doesn't take much to knock a wing off if you have some fire power (which "Schuftie" does have in 6 x .50).
But basically, as with any bomber, hit and run is the safest way. You won't put them down immediately but you can put them off the "bomb run" and you'll notice alot will go down after some time.
If you sit behind a bomber and try to line him up from within 500 or 600 yards, you'll be meat.  Grin Wink

The biggest problem with almost all WWII planes is they didn't or couldn't carry anywhere near enough ammo for "air to air" attack (bullets, cannon). I think the MK1 Spitfire had only something like 15 -18 seconds of fire.
Even the P47D with it's 3400 x .50 rounds had only 30 seconds or so with the 8 guns.
Those that had a long duration of fire were those with only the two guns (mainly for "bore-sighting") backed up by cannon with, again, limited rounds.
The plane with the most or longest duration of "effective fire" that I have noticed (in my limited knowledge) is the FW190 (not sure which Mark) but it had something like 1000 x .50 thru 2 guns and about 450 - 500 20mm cannon. (maybe someone can clarify which of the 190's this was).
Download it and try it against the Betty's.............. Grin

I remember that day very well, Hakwer.  Grin

I'd had a shocking morning. I came home from a nightshift and logged on about 30 mins late, and as it was my first time, I didn't know the password (the question wasn't there, then).
Then after I finally got on, everything just stopped for, as you said, about half an hour.
Then when we finally got going. I got my arse shot off. Although I did get a couple of really good kills.

Was that the day, due to lack of people, we decided to do some formation flying and someone got some really good formation landing shots (1% Spits)?
Then I kept running into everyone on the runway while we were trying to set up for a formation takeoff.

I had a really bad morning................. Shocked Lips Sealed

You may well be right there brensec pal. I remember you saying how you had problems getting in and I also remember those formation Spitfire shots that someone posted.
If it was my fault, I'm sorry about that pal. Hope to see you at the new dogfight sometime.

Thanks Brensec. I got there aventually after I'd gone through a few P40's.
Having dived from above pulling up sharp and climb was quite successful too, soft underbelly and the engines are a nice clear target. Gotta watch your speed though.

I have a couple of fw190's. Haven't flown them much though. Usually fly against them or ME109's in QC when I fancy a fly in something British made!

I spent a week in Sydney, I've got a mate living on Bondi Beach. Stayed off Hyde Park, opposite the Anzac Memorial (Btw, I saw your post on Anzac day). I got engaged right at the top of the Harbour Bridge just under the New South Wales flag (Corny I know but I'll remember where I did it).
The evening light at Darling Harbour was great for photo's of the city.

Kevieb,
Sounds like you stayed at the Park Lane Hotel or the one next to it (Something on the park).

There's nothing that beats the views of Sydney Harbour. Most people only see parts of it in photos, films etc and don't realise how big and beautiful it is. Hope you got some good shots.  Grin Wink

I'm assuming that the SimV games will be taking place on the Zone. Or am I wrong as usual!!!

I have only had the sim since xmas so I missed the previous round of games so I'm not sure of the format.

Is anyone available this Sunday so we can get the ball rolling.

I've always found the "realism" a bit more "real" online than on my P.C. Don't know why.
Before the last SimV Dogfight I took part in, I made sure I spent a few hours the preceding days on 1% planes as much as I could.
I found myself more "used" to the extra realism that I feel.

My memory is that planes tend to stall more easily in a turn online. Beats me. Grin Wink

As you all know I wasn't around last time the SimV games were happening.

Will these games be taking place on the Zone, here via the 'flightboard' or somewhere else?

I guess any other technicalities (fun/ no fun, etc) will get discussed on Sunday.

I should be there. Bank holiday in the UK on Monday so won't have to get up early for work Grin

Looking forward to being shot down by you all. I've got my life raft and shark repelent and I'm all ready to go!!

It's usually done via the zone. The game is called the SimV dogfight and is a private game with password entry only (Maccers or Woody will no doubt give out the password although the old password was simply pete.)
There are two CFS2 game rooms on the zone and I can't for the life of me remember what they are called now but I trust someone will let you all know.

Now the bad news (for those of you hoping for a few easy kills that is) I'll be at Duxford all day on Sunday for the Duxford Spring Airshow and I don't normally get home untill about 9-9:30pm so I may not be home in time to join in. I will pop over to the zone as soon as I get home, but if the game is running, I will not be able to get in.

9-00 pm Sunday GMT. That's 7-00 am Monday in Sydney.
You blokes haven't got Daylight Saving going on over there, or anything that would change the normal 10 hr difference?

Just to make sure of my timing (so I'm not late or early for the very first one), I'm posting this at 11-35 pm my time which should come up as 1-35 pm there. Can someone in Britain give me a time reference?

P.S. Is there some arrangement we can make so that any late comers can get in. Say, a break at 10-00 am and 10-30. (Not for me - I should be on time..........lol Grin))

Games normaly last around an hour - hour and half. People slowly drop out (problems on their end of the network, computer crashes, the slightest bit peeved about being shot down all the time Roll Eyes Tongue) but as long as their are 2-3 people there the games carry on, but by then it goes to formation flying.
Games should still be on the same IP if you drop, just re-connect and join again Smiley

Guys, just go over to the CFS2 game area (is that what it's called) on the Zone and scroll through the games untill you find the SimV game. Enter the game (password needed, pete I think it is) and we'll see you there!

How come it didn't work out for some? Problems on the Zone or something?

Anyway, apologies for my absence. Woke up at 0530 but couldn't manage to get out of bed on my own. The Mrs usually helps in such instances but I couldn't expect her to, as she had to get up at 0730 to go to Uni.

So, I laid awake while it all went on without me. Ahhh dear!!

If it's on next week, I think I'll try and stay up all night and doze in my "comfy chair" till it's time.

Thanks  Grin Cheesy Wink

I hope we can have another try next week. Maybe we should try an IP game from the start?
Brensec pal, sorry you could not make it. I would be happy to give you a game sometime when it's easier for you to join in.

To put it bluntly (for me anyway)... it sucked Angry
I feel real embarassed about what happened Embarrassed. The game would load fine from Zone, and everyone would get into the aircraft selection... then everyone would drop out one-by-one. Or if someone else was hosting, everyone would drop out all at once.
It even did it with me and Crazycraig on the IP's.
The fact that this problem only happened to me (and craig i think) means its somthing wrong at my end. Sad
I would really much like to try it again next week, im going to play about with CFS and my internet options, firewall (even though it was turned off) and hopefully get it working next week 8)

Thanks Hawker,

I'd like a private shoot-up. It's not so much the timing though.
Even though some may have a heart attack at the thought of getting up at 0530 for fun.........lol. It's not a problem for me, so long as I'm not working the day before or that day (I only do 2 or 3 shifts a week).
The main problem is that my condition is very unpredictable ie, pain etc. I don't know how I'll be until the time comes.
But, as I said, if I sit up in my "comfy" armchair and doze all nite (don't usually go to bed till 1-00 or 2-00 anyway) I should be OK for next week.
So let me know if it's on boys.

I hope it all goes a bit better next week. Grin Wink

Maccers, Do you have Win XP?
If so do you have it's in-built firewall switched off?

This would prevent you connecting.

Otherwise???

I usually fly at 100% (the other guy blacking out is my best chance of not being shot down!!!), and as I said usually stock planes but if I'm on next Sunday I shall have a look for the game.
It does get boring in the same planes so a spin in something closer to home is sometimes good.

Have fun

Hey Hawker,

Did you post any of the screenshots you took during the "sortie".

I looked in Raw Screenshots but couldn't find anything.

Thanks  Grin Grin Wink

I too am working tomorrow, but that in itself would not stop me joining in. However, one of my DVD drives went Ga Ga this afternoon so my machine is in bit right now and I'm stuck with my partner Pamela's crappy old P2 266 with 64 meg 16 meg video and a 56K dial up! Why don't we make a date for next Saturday night, say 9:00pm and get together for a scrap then?
Guys, if you do play tonight, don't forget to take some combat shots! Good hunting.
