Hi all. Been checking out the forums from time to time while on hols here in the US - glad to see everyone's doing their thing as usual.

While here I've got access to sooooper fast cable downloading for a few more days - just got the 20.4meg of Briefing Time in 2 mins 9 secs which blows the socks off my dial up at home.

Now the thing is what other big downloads should I get while I'm here. Got Concorde already - any ideas on aircraft or scenery? What about freeware mesh sceneries - US perhaps, but esp Europe and UK. Are they worth it? If so, which ones.

Hope you can come up with a few ideas becos I'm like a crazy man with a machine gun, but I don't know where to point it!

There's a 70mb freeware mesh for Spain and Portugal come out in the last few days (forget where). If I remember rightly, according to the readme, it has a link enclosed for France too.

Might well be worth a look. Too big for me on dial-up.

Thanks John and Eric. Got that one now and look forward very much to running it when I get home.

Also got the brilliant Oleksiy Frolov / Thomas Herger Dash 8 while I was at it, meshes for British Columbia, South Africa, Japan, most of US west coast and two different meshes for the UK and much more.

Total around 500MB so far. Don't you just love fast cable!

This is unreal - I live in an area where Broadband isn't available at home so I've got to make the most of it and I'm still looking.

Yikes Shocked Sad Cry, that's not even the slightest bit funny!!!

I wish I could do that, I have to concentrate on small downloads, 10Mb at most, in 1 bloody hour!!!!!!

And it takes 3.3% of the time to download twice that much there!!!  That's a really scary thought.  What a pleasure! 8) Grin

Cheers,
Greg

Greg, Use a download manager that will allow you to resume downloads. That's what I have to do.

Hey Greg, you guys will not believe this. My other half went shopping so I stayed in all day looking for stuff to d/l.

Would you believe I've got over 2 CDs worth (thats like 1300 MBs!!)

Stuff like mesh scenery (inc 16files av 40MB each for Alaska!!), Yannicks Falcon that I didn't have already because of the size of the package, the Project Focker stuff, all the Meljet 747/777 stuff I needed, 737 stuff, new POSKY stuff, stacks of panels etc etc.

Jeez - it'll take me weeks to install it all! Probably need a new h/drive as well. Still, won't be so bad going home after the holiday now but it'll be real bad going back to dial up.

BTW - great stuff Pete. Simv and Avsim both d/l at real cool speeds - 160/180 kbs. Flightsim....would you believe like only 10/15 kbs - when you can get in. That's only 2 or 3 times as fast as dial up. Could be a temporary fault I guess, but files that would take seconds to get from Simv were taking an hour or more from Flightsim (Japan mesh - don't tell me now it's on Simv after all....)

Oh well - still got tomorrow - what's left.....

Oh yeah - best thing is my wife could hardly find anything to buy - so worked out well all round!!

You'll enjoy that Falcon.  Wink

It was a quantum leap forward in FS aircraft when it was released. Still one of the best aircraft (freeware or payware) you can get.

John, you won't believe how much I'm looking forward to installing this stuff. I like to spend time making my own stuff but when I do d/load, just like Greg, I tend to make decisions based on the size of the package. That means with a dial up you miss out on more and more new stuff, and especially on new scenery. You just can't think about d/loading the Spain scenery that you and Eric mentioned, let alone the over 600 MB Alaska mesh that I got today.

Trouble is, unless I move I have no choice - we're in an area of 'insufficient demand' for DSL - only just under 300 people have pre-signed in our area which is a bit rural - and in any case BT say our exchange would not be economical to convert.

Sad

Aw man i wish i had DSL or cable or something faster than this 56k! I have DAP and 5 MB might take 5-10 mins while without it would take like 20 but you still look for better stuff, which come in bigger packages.

Something i wanted to download but couldn't because of it's size was the program at around 40 MB to edit clouds and really make them 3d. It was in the "Must Have" thread about 2-3 weeks ago.

Well, the best of luck downloading everything you possibly can. It is gonna be exciting returning home and installing everything!

I'd also be interested. I'm paying for this connection and I'll use it any way I can and if it means a 2hr download that's what is going to happen!!
