a couple in cambridgeshire sued the MOD for 9 million £'s because of the noise harriers flying overhead were making. they claimed it was causing problems for there personal lives and business lives, now luckaly they only got 950 thousand but even that is to much in my opinion and although the mod says they will try to sort the problems out.
personally i would love to be under a harrier flight path, would sure beat bristol airports, i just cant believe these people, what do they think, that they can now stuff their ears with the cash and block the noise Undecided

Hey there Crazy, and while you are at it, make sure some of the ordnants dont 'fall away' and completley flatten those people and their mansion.......

Man this subject really gets me sometimes. The ONLY people who have a right to complain about aircraft noise are the people who are in their senior years, as chances are, the airfield was there a long time before they were, and even bigger is the chance that they moved to that area knowing full well that there was an airfiled in close proximity.
If they dont like it, simple......move. The majority of RAF airfileds have been around since before WW2.

Better get down from my soapbox before i start on the heathrow 'Hacan clear skies idiots'.......

It's the sad state of things today.  People are unable and unwilling to take any responsibility for their own lives.  They constantly look for others to blame their misfortunes on.  I should sue my school of nursing 'cos the pressure of the course that I completed damaged my relationship with my wife.  I could also sue them for putting me on a ward with a very attractive nurse that caused the breakdown of my marriage.  I could make a fortune LOL.

They think they got it bad? When i go stay with my dad at RAF St. Athan (Cardiff) you usualy get rudely awoken at 6:30am by 3 or 4 tornado's or jaguars at a time, all using afterburners on takeoff. So you know, St. Athan is DARA's home base, who service all the RAF's aircraft, VC-10's, Harriers, C-17's you name it, its been there for repairs.
Why do people have to complain about stupid things like this? I'm going to sue MS for not providing a yellow and pink box for Windows XP Roll Eyes.

Guys we all know that people like this are muppets, and not really worthy of the gift of life, I know I've lived next door to a few people like this, but please tone the language down a little.
Oh and Craig, drop some napalm on their lawn for me. It smells like victory! Just kidding, what they should have done was ask him to go and fight in the next war in their stead as they hadn't had enough training... I sometimes wonder what goes on in side peoples heads, in the case of farmers living in 16th century manors in Cambridgeshire, not a lot!

Last time I was at Strathallan a call came in from Auchterarder, the guy complaining of our cessenas was a "pilot". He couldn't understand why he was being overflown by "low flying aircraft" every few minutes. He tried to order the cheif instructor to change our flight plans so as not to disturb him so early on a sunday (at 15:00hrs).
Now our aircraft were only bellow 5000 feet whilst climbing and decending and at no point came within 7 miles of the village, putting this guy in his place was great fun Grin.

That's not half as bad as one I heard.
Southwest Airlines is know for their fun and perky air staff. They often use rhymes and such to cheer up passengers. One day an innocent young stewardess said "Enie Minie Miny Mo, pick a seat we've got to go" to try and get people to take their seats. Southwest is now being sued by two African American women who were apauled at the use of this rhyme because of its "racial origins." The stewardess did not know about the rhyme's racist origins. You older guys will know how the rhyme may be concieved as racist.

???

Sorry to sound a slightly discordant note guys.

Actually the house had been there for hundreds of years before the base and as I recall, most aircraft movements had been reduced or even terminated in recent years until there was a decision to reactivate with the Harrier training.

Problem was they were using the house to line up the trainee pilots, continuously overflying it and as I recall (although I can't be sure) flying outside of the agreed hours to the extent it was affecting the lives and business of the residents.

Sorry folks, when I saw the recent TV news report I initially felt like most of you but when I heard the full details my sympathies were with the people. Looks like the authorities felt the same way also.

Surely quality of life is more important than the right to fly whenever and wherever you want - especially when there are so many closed airfields in the UK that could be reactivated for the purpose while affecting almost no one.

I'm sure as an occasional posting guest I'll get some flack on this one, but it's too easy to get hysterical if you don't know (or want to know) the facts.

No flak from me Bumper.

I really detest people that move into a flight pattern and then complain of the noise.

However, I realize there are two sides to most stories.

1st of all Bumper - you shouldn't get any flack .... being 'rude' in this little corner of cyberspace is strongly discouraged  8)

However this case did strike me - from  the little I heard about it - as being 'establishment supporting establishment' - somethin g that is supposed to be dwindling in our enlightened times ... There must be 100's of similar cases that get thrown out the window. Who is with me on wondering if this was an old fashioned  fart of a judge who was a member of the pheasant shooting party that  this couple ran from their estate?

& the British MOD (Ministry of Defence) is usually imm une from civil prosecution. I heard that there are soldiers out there who have been disabled for life in the course of their (non war) duties only to be given a pathetic pension & an even more pathetic payment ($15K/£10K for the loss of an arm, for example..)

No doubt someone will correct me if I'm wrong.....

i wont go into the ins and outs of the MOD my dad works for them and ya never know who maybe readin this, but according to the MOD a number of soldiers commited suicide by shooting themselves in the head twice. so i would never trust them, but this couple must have known about this flight line before they moved in no matter how long the house has been there
i am gonna go on the whole old fart of a judge idea

The house is actually Walcot Hall, a Grade I listed manor house in Barnack, Lincolnshire, near RAF Wittering. I saw an aerial photo published in today's newspapers. It might be a huge estate but it's so close the house is almost part of the airfield & in direct line with the runways. No matter how rich you are I doubt anyone could put up with Harriers constantly using the house to line up on final approach at all hours of the day & night. Those Harriers are deafening at the best of times. I love aircraft but would certainly complain too.  Roll Eyes

If you buy a house next to a military airfield, you should expect that there will be a lot of air traffic and that it will be loud at times

But who would buy a house next to a military airfield? It will be noisy, no matter what you want

Well, the house was built in 1678 so it's been there much longer than the airfield. The present owners moved there in 1963 when activity was confined to conventional aircraft. They had no objection to that & all was fine until the Harriers started operating there in 1967. If you've ever heard a Harrier landing you will know just how noisy they are. I don't usually have much time for people who complain about aircraft noise but have a certain sympathy with the owners in this instance.

Hi Hagar/All...!

My local airfield, (Shobdon EGBS), has VERY, VERY strict rules regarding over-flying the villages and sensitive areas surrounding the airfield, and everyone obeys these rules to the letter.
It is EXTREMELY important NOT to antagonise any locals, but to encourage them to visit and enjoy the hospitality of their local airfield.
Small airfields, at least, need all the good press that they can get, to prevent them from being closed down, which they surely will be if local residents complain too much...!
...seen it happen lots of times... Cry...!
Noisy aeroplanes and the general public don't mix very well...

nor do the complaining general public and fast low flying jets with big bombs under their wings Wink
actually at the middle wallop airshow they used to have a really funny trick they would play,(i think i have told ya about this before) but they would send an assistant to the car park and note down the number plate of a really nice car and then they would have a helecoptor bring in an old car and then accidently drop it from a large height, they would then have the announcer come over the PA and ask the the owner of said car please goto the nearest info booth we have accidently picked up the wrong car for our display. then they would, get a bottle of bubbly for not sueing after finding out it was a joke
maybe they should do that to these people and give them a little heart attack instead of bubbly:)

Hi Woody... Grin...!

I'll give you 10/10 for that reply me old Mate.... Grin...!
I have a new next door neighbour who keeps and breeds parakeets in a very large aviary near the bottom of my garden.
He loves his parakeets and is quite oblivious to the noise they make 18 hours every day, 365 days every year...
..but it is slowly destroying my life...

It's a bit like the general public and aeroplanes, we are all looking for peace and quiet in our lives...
As you say, not everyone is an aviation nut, and not everyone is a parakeet nut...
and there the problem lies...

Cheers...

Don't get me wrong. I always liked the Harrier & love seeing them displayed at the local airshow. The display aircraft & pilots are most likely based at RAF Wittering. The noise is incredible & almost painful. I would soon get fed up if they were constantly flying over at zero feet at all hours. Much as I love aircraft it would be beyond a joke. I strongly object to the local police helo using my house as a landmark for practice with their FLUR gizmo or whatever they're up to after midnight. LOL
I just spotted this on the official website. "The nature of the tasks undertaken generates a very high level of aircraft activity within the Wittering local area and, on average, nearly 100 movements are flown every day".

Hmm, I still think it v.slightly reeks of the establishment. Okay the noise is an issue, but there has been an airbase there since 1916! The good old RFC....
When I was at Wyton we used to have open days, and all the locals from the village were invited for free. Lunch and drinks on the RAF, we found it kept relations with the villagers very amicable, and they always appreciated us and our hospitality.
Mind you now they've been taken for nearly a million I'd imagine certain people will be well and truely off the invitation list....

Hi Hagar.... Grin...!
Hear, hear..... Grin...!
I love listening to the little Cessna's and occasional micro-lights that pass chuffin' overhead, and so do most of my neighbours who pop out into their gardens to watch them.
What annoys us are the Police /Army helicopters that hover at low level, (often, I'm sure, below the 500 foot rule), and rattle our teeth against our tea-cups when sitting outside in our gardens enjoying the flowers and our newly installed "water feature"... Smiley...!

but hey i have put up with it all my life it may aswell be something cool like harriers

It's true you can get used to most things. I never objected to our local airport & hardly noticed the trains when I lived near the railway line. My uncle lived on the approach to Heathrow & I loved to lay in back garden collecting the reg numbers as they flew low over it, one every 2 minutes at that time. He never noticed when the picture on his TV regularly turned upside down. LOL
I do think the constant noise of those Harriers would drive me completely round the bend. I'm almost there now & it wouldn't take much. Wink
As Pete & Ozzy point out, this case might well have been influenced by the "old school tie". Normal people wouldn't stand a chance but nobody should have to put up with that. IMHO

Hi Ozzy... Grin...!
..if those blue and white striped, (Police), helo's had been doing their job properly and spotted the thieving toe-rags who were stealing my lovely Honda CBR 600 FM, motor-bike from my garden path, I might wave nicely to them, but as they didn't, and I lost it, never to be found again, .....two fingers would be in order, I think, for the noise they are making over my English Country Garden... Angry...!
LOL...LOL...LOL...!

Cheers Mate...!

The one that annoys me is a blue & yellow MD903 Explorer. This is the offending object.

...

Not so noisy as their previous Bo105 but I still shake my fist at it on a regular basis. Helos were never my favourite type of flying machine, especially when they insist on hovering over my house.  Cheesy

It's odd what noise nuisance will do to people. I had a workmate who lived on the boundary of Gatwick Airport. His family had lived there since well before the airport existed. This guy worked in the industry & was the most amiable & inoffensive person you could ever wish to meet. He confessed to me once that if he had a gun he would have happily shot at the aircraft in frustration at the constant noise. I'm sure he would not have done so but this demonstrates the effect of constant noise pollution. People have murdered their neighbours at far less provocation.

Being near the RAF's DHFS, we get those, B-212 Griffons and Squirrls in that colour scheme.
Gets confusing when your goin down the A5 at 90mph and see one of those above you Embarrassed 8) "Is it a copper?" "Is it an ambulance" "Is it an inexperienced new pilot of the airforce" *falls out of sky* "yes, its RAF" Smiley
Back to the topic. That couple should really blame the estate agency that sold the house to them (or the previous owner) if they didnt warn about the local airfield. It would seem appropriate to point it out...
Salesman: ... and such a lovley back garden, plenty of space...
*roar of jet engine*
Man: Whats that noise?
Salesman: Thats absolutely definatly not and airfiled close to the house. You'll never get botherd by low flying harriers here.
*Harrier flys past low level*
Man: What was that?
Salesman: That? err... That was a pigeon!

I'd love to see anyone do that around here. Right now the US has 24/7 air patrols around here, because I live in the DC Metro area. I'm sure if anyone did complain at F-16's going full blower at 1AM they'd get a treat the next night hehe.

Would that be Bf 109s? Plenty of them round here in the 40s. Not only creating a noise nuisance but also shooting at you. Tongue  Wink

I did notice the number of posts is creeping up. Maybe it's time I changed my user name again.  Undecided
I keep threatening to retire but can't seem to drag myself away. Guess you're all stuck with me for a while longer whether you like it or not.  Grin
