I've recently noticed that the language in these forums has been slowly degrading.
What has caused this, and can it be fixed?

Undecided

I think it's just the plain and simple fact that we're starting to get younger members.  Only for examples, look at the contrasts between Katana and Fozzer.

I don't even associate age with it....I see it as "too much trouble" to insert punctuation and not enough attention span to learn proper grammar when the lessons were upon some..............to, too, and two are very common errors on here........

Maybe I should have elaberated.
I do agree that the grammar of many members is getting harder and harder to read each day,
but
I was referring to the vocabulary of a lot of recent threads in particular.

Words that are rather foul that may offend other members.

For some people, it's part of their daily vocabulary. Not myself personally, but being a high school student, I am pretty numb to it.  Wink

I believe Yabb has an option to edit out the particularly naughty words. But, words like crap, hell, etc. aren't considered "bad" in my book.  Smiley

I haven't noticed any difference Steve-O.

I occasionally insert the odd word which may be considered rude or foul, but being Australian, there are some words which are just ordinary words for us and I may not realise, for example, I'm told that "arse" can be considered a bit naughty but it's perfectly OK in "mixed company" where I am, anyway we spell it differently from the rest of you.

However, as for F's and C's and Sh** I don't use them here at all, at least don't recall. I use "crap" often, but I'm told by my American friends on the Forum that it's OK.

Speaking as an English teacher I think there are two major reasons.
Number one we are attracting a lot of new members for whom English is NOT their mother language, and they should be applauded for having a go in a different language (believe me I know how hard it is!), and you have different levels of expertise within that language, for example ATI is v.good at English, and he is German, whereas some of our other foreign members are still just beginning to learn English.
Also the education system (please note that word, do NOT suppliment for teachers!) is failing. All students seem to care about these days is their rights, not their education. When I first started teaching in Hungary I was treated v.differently by the students than I am now, nowadays they know I can't even give them a detention, so they swear at me, or wonder into the class half way through the lesson, and don't apologise! It really comes down to the hippy brigade (no disrespect to ex-hippies), and their free will attitude and lack of discipline. In Japan things are v.different, and they still have exceptional discipline, and it shows!
Alas we cannot turn back the clock and fix these things, and alas the American sueing culture is catching on everywhere these days. There was a good thread about this a while back, and a lot of the American members here were saying 'why can't people accept responsibility for their actions?', and they were right.

I actually disagree. I've sometimes noticed a marked improvement after members have been here a while. The general standards of spelling, punctuation & grammar are surprisingly good, particularly for an international forum. Some of the blame must lie with the popular texting & internet shorthand culture but age has nothing to do with it. IMHO  Wink

The ability to spell has no bearing on intelligence. It comes easily for some people while others will always have problems. I'm particularly fussy about spelling which is why my posts are often edited. I'm a rotten typist & often make typos so I take the trouble to go back & correct them. Most people wouldn't bother. Silly little things that often annoy me are the errant apostrophe in plurals & posessive pronouns (it's instead of its) & the misuse of the word "to" for too, meaning also. The word "lose" often seems to gain an extra O for some reason. Loose has an entirely different meaning.  ???

In my experience, the people who complain the loudest about the quality of spelling & grammar are not always as good as they think. I expect you will all go through this reply with a fine toothcomb for mistakes.  Grin

I always proof read" my posts! I think people sometimes make assumptions about you when you are constantly spelling words wrong and using foul language. It says something about your charactar. Then again, I need to be aware that alot of people speak different languages and are doing the best they can. I refrain from any foul language here and in my personal life. I know that alot of todays youth speak horribly and every other word is a curse or just plain dis-respectful! The words that come out of their mouth and the things some guys say to girls,  I can't believe. Believe me, when I was young, yeah, I definatley said ALOT!!!! But I always respected my peers and women! It is in their up-bringing. Unfortunatley they are products of thier enviroment. Poor parenting breeds poor offspring!

See I just  "previewed this and found 3 mistakes!"  lol

Yeah, I see that some misconstrued Steve-O's meaning.
As I said in my post, there are words which may be OK for some and not for others. I think usually, though, you can tell in context whether the person is being rude, disrespectful or is just speaking the way they would normally do so.  Grin Wink

Hagar my friend, you inspire me to go and learn....after seeing your placement of the word " toothcomb " at the end of your post, I wondered if you forgot the space in the middle, or used that word in place of fine-toothed comb...A term which is more commonly used in my part of the world......in my search to learn what a toothcomb is, I did find out that a toothcomb is a set of teeth, used in many animals primarily for grooming and foraging for food, so in essence you didn't make any error there at all................thanks for the lesson, pal..........if you hadn't said it, I wouldn't have learned about this......

I must admit to checking the correct spelling of toothcomb, especially for posting in this thread. It's a common enough expression in my part of the world but I wasn't sure. It didn't show up in Dictionary.com so I went back to good ol' Google.  Wink

Hmm, interesting.
It amazes me what you can learn here Grin
As for harsh language, I'm a hypocrite. I don't tollerate it from my students, I don't like it when somebody is using it in front of a lady, but when I'm working on something or irritated, boy can I use the F-word e.g. fudge, flip, fruitbat etc.
I did recently do a whole lecture on this word at uni., and it proved to be a really interesting lesson (according to my students), and quite a lot of fun. It is  just such a versatile word.
But I won't tolerate naughty stuff here, so be warned!

Simviation has actually given me a complete 360 and sent me off on my way after a final 180 as far as cussing was concerned!  Last year, I had a Scottish friend who said a lot of girls found me attractive but were put off by my excessive swearing.  My school speech and my Simviation speaking style are almost identical now, but I regretfully have no update as to my situation with the ladies.  Ol' 'Scotland' has moved back home and I've always been a bit oblivious!

My grammar, punctuation and spelling are always terrible.  I am better now that I can use a keyboard but my brain moves at about 500mph and my fingers at about 5mph.  I am always rushing trying to get to the point of what I wish to say and often I lose the thread completely.  I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to my international buddies who for some strange reason don't always see the funny side to my jokes.

I would also like to thank you guys.  This is beyond doubt the politest and most helpful (is politest a word?) forum I have ever seen.

I despair when I read some post's as I haven't a clue what the person means.  I have taken to not responding if I only think I understand due to a recent disagreement with a member of a collective.....

Hey Will, Since this thread is about punctuation & grammer, I will have to tell you that "politest" is not a word.....as far as I know without checking the dictionary.

It should read, "This is beyond a doubt, the most polite and helpful forum I have ever seen."

Interesting to learn that there is such a word (and thing) as a "toothcomb" however, I really do think, regardless what part of the world you're from, that in the context you used the expression, Hagar, it is supposed to be "fine-toothed comb" as in the type used for removing nits etc.   Grin Grin Grin Grin Wink

That was also my understanding of the word. However, the meaning of the actual word is not important. The phrase "go over it with a fine toothcomb" is well known & still in common usage. The spelling seems to vary between toothcomb & tooth-comb depending on which part of the world you're from.  Wink

I think i've said crap a few times before in this forum but i can stop the same way i started, all you gotta do is say it......

My main problem with grammar is my brain and fingers....

My brain goes faster and then my fingers, so sometimes i might end end up typing:

somehting, wihch, etc, etc.

Other than the crap word or damn ( excuse me for using it now, but i need it for this post) i hardly, i ever say F**K and i do agree that forums like these teach you new words and a beter language. Like when you have a friend that says: That is the bomb!
I might not say the bomb but if i keep hanging out with him i am going to pick up that word as well. So, thos forum is like that friend, you pick up stuff as you go.

Oh, and i might use shortcut words like gonna, donno, gotta, etc. I know the correct word, Going to, Don't know, Got to (which is not correct. If i am not mistaken "I have to" is the correct way)

Well, there is what i have to say and as to the favorite button is the check this if you wish to be notified of replies to this topic, i click a few things, not all. Like this this one

Peace

Id like to coment that of all the forums found on the information super highway, this is about the cleanest I`ve encountered.Im new to computers, and I never took typing in school-I exelled in Industrial Arts-Typing was for girls in that day,so if I mis-spell a word,or mis-place a punctuation it doesent mean Im stupid. The skills of my hands provide a decent and comfortable life and future for my wife and two sons.I can speak the language properly, not type it-I "chicken peck" these messages out because I enjoy the conversation and exchange of information found here.As far as foul language goes, the word"crap"is no worse an expletive than "bloody hell"Thats the worst you`ll here from me.If the paragraph needs someting a bit more, you might see"#%*#!@"just to lend the point gravitas.Besides, this is a flight simulation forum, not Shakesperian actors orratory school! 8)

Grin Hmmmmmmm!!!!!!   Are we expected to be perfectionists in our Typing and English skills?  With all the comments made here, maybe a Moderator should make up some ground rules for what is expected.  Is that really necessary?  This is a Flight Sim forum and I love it in here.   I agree with Phil, and I suspect a lot of participants are "Hunt and Peck" typists and have not a lot of time to sit down type, correct or proof read.  I type 85 wpm and make mistakes which I hate correcting, its time consuming and one is only trying to make a point, ask questions or comment on a subject.  I am also an old fart, my use of language leaves something to be desired sometimes (I spent 36 years in the military),  and I havent seen anything in here to upset me at all, whether said by a 12 year old or a 65 year old.  I love the information that can be gleaned from these forums and have put a lot of it to good use to upgrade, update and make my FS better, even tho' sometimes I have to read between the lines or ask for elaboration.  Sorry guys, I dont mean to preach, but I just don't see a problem here.  You want to see bad language, go into multi-player and watch the "scrolling comments" in the lobby.  Anyway "enuf" said  lol, lmao, rotflmao.  Anybody pissed at what I said, tell me so.  I like that. Congratulations Woody, I'm glad you don't go in for the more insulting expressions.
As I've said, being from Oz, there isn't really anthing that's taboo, and at the risk of speaking for the majority of my countrymen, we aren't offended easily by anything , much less words. Please consider, in the interest of those who may not be so liberal that "Bugger" has to do with the......how shall we say......the sticking of.........ummmm....something.......into the.........ahhh....errr........rear of a person (man or woman). Ah, basically describing the act of sodomy.
But don't get me wrong. Still a great word for describing the condition of oneself after heavy exersize (buggered), the condition of one's car engine (buggered) etc. Stuffed is always good too................. Grin Grin Grin........................................... Grin Cheesy Winkj/k

I move to the floor that that this issue be decided upon by our esteemed moderators,as the rules and regulations of acceptable language, grammar and general conduct are in drastic need of clarification as this thread is in danger of becoming "buggered",as well as"NFG"  Grin All those in favor say....... 8)

The rules and regs are pretty well set out. I believe they are discussed at some length somewhere on the home page.
Everyone has a reasonable idea of what is acceptable and what is not, as far as bad language is concerned.
As for grammar etc, well, we all have our strengths.
As has been mentioned, there are posters from foreign countries and from those that are still in school and still learning.
So, given all this, we need to be patient where there is an obvious language barrier or lack of knowledge due to age.
The annoying thing for most, is the laziness and lack of pride that is sometimes quite evident.

Those that are at a genuine disadvantage can use this forum as a place of learning by way of advice from those here that are "in the know" or by making use of spell checkers, thesaurae and other tools.
