Having owned CFS 3 for about 8 hours now, I must say MS is not winning any converts here. I have a pretty good system (the only flaw being shared video memory, but with a gig of RAM, who cares!), and even with frame rates in the mid-twenties it stutters like a virgin in his first nudie bar. I heard tell of a patch somewhere, if someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. So, here are my main gripes, please feel free to advise me on them or ignore them if you have heard them 1000 times already.
1. Butt-ugly interface: Man I really wish that guy would go take a leak or something! Doesn't he get bored standing around the flight line all day? If MS is going to subject us to ‘in-game’ quality pictures then I think we should be able to rotate around the plane and choose how we look at it.
2. NO PREVIOUS ADD-ONS? Come on now! I have a perfectly nice Corsair from CFS2 waiting in the hanger and can’t take it out because Bill wanted to start from scratch…
3. Aircraft and scenery not up to par: This sim actually looks worse than CFS 2. When I get octagon shaped tires I start getting mad!
4. Not enough free will to exercise over the sim: Is this thing going to tell me how to wipe my… nose next? Jeez, all I want to do is hop in a plane and take off for a little flying. We don’t have to plan a moon shot to do it do we?
5. This sim reminds me of the release of FS 2000. Remember what a mess that was? Then I tried to take a moderate side, saying that MS was building a base for future systems to run on and that we were on a verge of a big growth in computing power. It happened, but I was wrong. FS2K was flawed and so is this
Now, before everyone starts screaming at me, there are a few things I like…
1. Better flight models: Remember European Air War? When it came out, the flight models were hailed as realistic as it could get outside of maybe X-plane. I love the fact that I can’t turn 180 degrees without ‘redding out’ or watching my stalls. The first time I couldn’t pull out of a dive in time, I laughed my rear off!
2. Ground Targets: It’s about darn time! Man, I got chewed up about six times from flak from those damn whirblewinds
3. Better campaigns and role playing: I haven’t gotten in to this too much yet, but the ability to ‘grow’ a pilot looks very promising
BTW, the best add-on yet I’ve found is the “Hogan’s Heroes” theme music!
