Darn Daley! I tell ya, politicians only care bout 3 things, money, being elected, and having things named after them. I mean please; an airport for a park? (I smell widespread protests..) Anyways, maybe after Daley leaves and some other guy (with good intentions) comes in, maybe a reconstruction of a new Meigs may be planned (but those politicians always say lies...)

Mates, I,m half way round the world and my first MS flight was out of that field. I,ve got a field a long way from were I live now that will forever be 'home'. I join in your sense of loss.
Look at those photo's. Do I see boatpens? That piece of land will never be a park!

Being Australian, I don't know what the significance of this airfield is. Although I do mourn the loss of anything that is of importance and emotional significance to so many.
Please accept my condolences. I haven't read alot of this thread, just skimmed over it, but it seems to me another case of an elected official taking their assumed authority a bit too far.

i hope that Daley isnt gonna be in office very long-do u remember this? Quote:
Meigs Field to remain open until at least 2006!
Likely 'til 2026!!!

Governor Ryan & Mayor Daley agree on deal that will assure the life of Meigs Field.

On Wednesday, December 5, 2001, the "Coolest Little Airport on the Planet" received new life: An extension of its life by 4-24 years or longer.

At a joint press conference, IL Gov. Ryan and Mayor Richard Daley announced a comprehensive agreement on airport capacity for the Chicago region, a plan that includes keeping Meigs Field open for up to 24 or more years (with some conditions, including an option for the Illinois Legislature to vote Meigs out of existence as early as 2006.)

To Gov. Ryan:

All 6,000+ members of the Friends of Meigs Field say:
"Thanks for your vision, leadership and tenacity for all of general aviation."

To every person and organization who has been involved in the effort to preserve Meigs:
"Way to go, team!!! You're the best!"

maybe its just me but i dont think its 2006 yet.... Undecided

LOL, Unfortunatly, here in chicago, we don't have free elections. We just have this day were you cast votes for the one guy on the ballot. Roll Eyes

Oh, sometimes we have a choice, but it's ussually some moron that doesn't have a prayer of winning anyway. Any serious threats are destroyed before they have a chance of decrowning "King Daley".

I just e-mailed the Mayor and passed on the anger of the flight sim comunity (somewhat exagerated of course), and the friends of meigs site, linked elswhere in this thread, has a wonderful coments forwarding service on the main page. I used that to.
I would suggest, even if your only minorly interested in the subject, that you could help those of us fighting this, by forwarding opinions of outrage, real or imagined, through the above mentioned sources. The more the the better. Don't care if your out in austraillia, or out on the moon. The flightsim comunity is a strong population of people whose opinions are probably not expected by the mayor, and could in fact aid in the backlash.
  Thanks

Being the cynical old duffer I am I think the support of the FS community would do more harm than good. As a typical aircraft & flight sim fanatic I'm already regarded by friends & neighbours as some sort of eccentric, nerdy weirdo. They're most likely correct & I do nothing to alter their impressions.  Wink
From past experience of the outrage shown by the FS community when upset, the type of hate mail he is likely to receive would confirm it. Roll Eyes

Either Mayor Daley has gone beyond his domain & broken the law..... or the system is wrong & you should blame that.

If Daley has broken the law then you should concentrate on this aspect & read what others are doing about this. If not - then the Chicago city political system has some pretty loose strings & it's that that is fundamentally wrong..

Democracy is supposed to be contained within a system of checks & counterchecks so that elected people are accountable to people all around them who also hold power - not to mention the people who elected them. If one man can yield too much power then one man always will - there will always be someone out there ready to grab power if it's sitting on the shelf. Corrupt politicians only survive in a flawed system.

& I certainly agree with Hagar that mentioning the FS community would be an own goal. IMHO, You should take a look at the 'save meigs' sites (there used to be a guy who ran one of them that hung round here..) & see what they advise & support them if you can. In my mind that's the best course of action.....

He can be slapped with perjury. He signed the agreement to keep it open till '26. It is still in the making, (apparently) and according to the legal system, he will be in a world of hurt if its signed. There are several plans out there.

One more word - Recall.
