I was just wondering if anyone here knew anything about flight training. I have found a seemingly good deal and was wondering if any of you agree. here are the specs.
The Land Away Double (1 hour)*
Experience 2 take-offs and landings and fly the aeroplane yourself! Land Away Double is designed as a unique double value introduction. It comprises 2 'hands on' 30 minute training flights with an instructor in one of our modern dual controlled training aircraft. You fly to another airfield, land and have a coffee with your instructor. Question him or her about all aspects of flying. A comprehensive pre-flight briefing and after flight discussion complete this all inclusive lesson, designed to be 'flying fun' as well as counting towards your Private Pilot's Licence.
Also if any of you know anywhere near London where I could get a better deal please tell me
EDIT: In case you didn't realise I am thinking of taking lessons. This particular Flight is from Elstree Aerodrome

It sounds pretty good to me. You forgot to mention the cost so I can't say how good the deal is. To count the time towards your PPL I think you would need to have a Student Pilots Licence or whatever the equivalent is today. It might be worth giving them a ring to clarify this. I'm sure they will be pleased to answer any questions. Good luck.

Well, my info is rather out of date, 1960 to be exact. LOL
EirePlane. If you're serious about this I think it's worth confirming with the flying club. After posting my first reply I checked your age. I think this is worth mentioning too. I'm sure they can work something out.

It sounds pretty good Eireplane, my advice is pick up the phone and call them and discuss the ins and outs and see if there are any restrictions e.g. age, medical etc.
But if the price is right go for it! Oh and Elstree is only just outside W.London, not far from Slough.

it's £115 for a 2 seater or £129 for a 4 seater. I found it at
http://www.cabair.com
. I sent them an E-Mail this morning asking about age restrictions but as far as I know you can get a licence at the age of 12 so I probably am old enough (Im 13)

Just to compare prices, here is a chart of charges for various aeroplanes at my local aerodrome....
http://www.aeroclub.co.uk/HACDefault.htm
They include a full briefing before and after each flight and you receive a certificate which goes towards your PPL.
(Note 1 hour flying in a Cessna 150/152 is £87.50 with instructor).
Cheers...
Paul.
(England).
P.S. you also get free tea/coffee....

Hey Paul, you know what they say. A good landing is one you walk away from, a great one is were they can use the aircraft again.

Go for it!!!!!
I have my first lesson booked for 3rd April 2003 at 11.00.
I was going to have a trial flight but thought "what the hell" and booked a full hour in a piper warrior for £140.00. It is expensive but it adds a full hour to my shiny new log book and at 6'5" I can't fit into a cessna 152.
I am told banks will give loans for flight training but you need a business plan etc. I would love to get commercial IFR certification but that is for the future.
Wish me luck.

I would say go for it. From experience it's much more practical & convenient to use a local club.
My old company have dealt with Cabair for years & I know they're a reputable outfit. From the description, Fozzer's local club is a non profit-making organisation which does make it cheaper overall although there is an annual membership fee. The actual cost for their 1 hour trial lesson is £95 & £122 respectively. This would be a continuous flight with just one take-off & landing.
http://www.aeroclub.co.uk/HACTrialLesson.asp
You would also have to add the cost of travelling to & from Herefordshire.
Good luck to everyone.

Ozzy...
... how long have you been in Hungary?
Eireplane :
Elstree is directly North of london - just north of Mill Hill.
By the way - Cabair is one of THE most expensive places to take lessons in the UK. They are probably very professional - but they are used by airlines & corporate bodies for flight training mainly. I suggest you buy a current (Mar 2003) copy of 'Pilot' magazine -
www.pilotweb.co.uk
- as they have currently a free addon called 'where to fly' in the UK (& elsewhere to a lesser extent)
The cheapest (though it's still expensive) around north of london is Panshanger. Depending on where you are - get the guide - it's your best bet
PA28 at Cabair dual = £168 p/h
PA28 at Panshanger dual = £127 p/h
The minimum age for a PPL(A) in the UK is 16 - though most schools now seem to be going for the JAR PPL which has a 17 min. There is no minimum age for dual lessons but it will be a little drawn out if you start now.
No harm in taking a trial lesson or 2 though

Pete I've been here a loooooong time. Occassionally my geography goes a bit off. This is why I fly so low, I can read the street signs (even inverted!)
As for magazines, outside of Budapest English language mags are a rarity, and English language books have only recently started turning up in bookshops too.

Cabair have replyed to my E-Mail and said
Quote:
You can take a flying lesson from any age, however when it comes to training for
either the National Private Pilots Licence (N.P.P.L) or the European Private
Pilots Licence (JAA-PPL), you must be at least 14 years old to log flying time,
countable towards your licence.
To go first solo, where you will be in command of the aeroplane yourself, you
must be atleast 16 years old, and for licence issue you must be atleast 17 years
old.
Hope this helps,
Ian Hunt (Flying Instructor)
Cabair - London School of Flying.
Mabye I'm better off waiting till next year so I can try and log a few hours

there is always the whole other side of it though.
if you take a lesson now then you get to know wether or not its really what ya want to do, 9 times out of 10 it always is
just a thought,
its up to you in the end

The other side of it is that the
minimum
time for a ppl is 45 hours time logged. If you want to get practice in now enjoy it. I will never be able to afford to get a ppl without a loan and a job that would support the hours I need to keep it once I get it but I am taking a lesson because I love the idea of flying. The worst that can happen is that I hate it. The best is that I somehow manage to scrape the funds together and fly for real. In any event it will make me a better sim pilot and if that is all it's better than nowt.

I thought Smoke is a Limey. ???
I've never been to Newcastle but always associated "nowt" with Yorkshire. Ilkley Moor b'at 'at & all that. Yes, I have relatives in Yorkshire & the native "Tykes" really still speak like that in everyday language.
Here's a Geordie- BBC English translator.

I know a lot about flight training. I have been a out a bit lately for personal reasons, but I am a flight instructor. I would strongly reccommend looking overseas. Hillsboro Aviation (where I work) has a Visa program.
The exchange rates for today (As of 3/31/03)
Your cost with us (the school you are looking into)
$123.40 US Dollars for two seater
$138.42 US Dollars for a four seater
The price for you at Hillsboro Aviation
$62 US Dollars for a full hour in a Cessna 152 (two seater)
$78 US Dollars for a full hour in a Cessna 172P (four seater)
Now, lets put that money back into your currency.
Your school:
£115 for a two seater
£129 for a four seater
Hillsboro Aviation:
£57.78 for a two seater
£72.70 for a four seater
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

hmm, look overseas, do you think it would be any easier to get the licence in Ireland. If it's as bad as the driving tests I could fly there and if I failed fly back home again

It might be cheaper but I doubt it would be any easier as Ireland is a full member of the EEC. I don't know for certain but they would most likely use the European Private
Pilots Licence (JAA-PPL).
PS. Not too sure about Scubapro's currency conversions.
£115 = $181.85 US & $62 US = £39.21 at today's rate.
