I like this plane and wouldn't mind flying it for a while, but in an airforce with F-15s and F-16s I don't think I'd be happy to plod along at 450kts for very long. Still it's got a GAU-8 Avenger, one HELL of a gun Grin.

I am a huge fan of a/c with unique configurations, such as the V-22 and Gee Bee, and the Warthog is probably one of my favorite military planes.  I've never understood what the problem is with cruising along at under Mach 1, but some people just need the speed. Wink

This is by far one of the most  ShockedAMAZING Cheesy models of the A-10 that I have yet seen.  Where did you get this beautiful bird?

ya i am wondering the same thing as Ender_Baron. Also the A-10 (along with most figters) was desinged for functionality not looks. If it looks good then maybe a flight demo team will use it but when one of those damn Iraqis or something is shotting at you they arent gona give a s*** about weather the thing looks great or not, they are gona like it more when it is a flaming reck. And the A-10 given it flys at slow speeds need to be able to take one h*** of a beating, which it can. With this aircraft flying at mach 1 isnt something that would help it. close support= speed not nessisary= Puch a must. so the A-10 from a Opperational stantpoint is a buttie. so really the poll should be more specific because looking at it, well lets just say it isnt the hottest girl on the tarmack but then one everyone likes.

It's ugly, not in a 'that girl isn't very pretty' ugly way, more like, a 'hey that dog is about tear me apart' ugly.

The ugliest plane has to be the flying boat made in the early 20th century. It must have been 100 feet long with wings.

Probably the next ugliest was the plane Alexander Gram Bell made. It looked like a flying harmonica.

P.S Good shots.

Ugly depends on your point of view...

  • 1. If you like planes it is odd looking
  • 2. If you are an infantryman watching enemy tanks closing on your position when an A-10 rolls in...it's beautiful.
  • 3. If you are an enemy tanker closing on an infantryman when you suddenly see an A-10 rolling in...it's ugly. You also know it's gonna get a whole lot uglier.

    this plane is the BALLS

They built the aircraft around the gun. The pilot sits in a Titanium tub to protect him from getting shot at from the ground.

2 engines and 2 rudders help this "Beast" come back with some bad battle scars.

That is Kirk Ollsens plane, he has an A-10 and an unarmed OA-10 which does some FAC for the grunts on the ground. To me, this by far is the best looking A-10 out there.

    Great shots!

Well all I can say is that it looks unique. There are uglier aircraft. Look at the apache. And the F117. There both butt ugly.

You say that the plane was made around the gun? I've heard that story before... Oh yes... The P39! Grin

BTW has anyone actually noticed that its an aircraft and not an artillary piece? There is a big differance. 105mm howitzers do not fly. Nor does the USAF put heavy cannon on there aircraft. (note i am saying that the minigun in the nose is a machine gun. not a cannon.)

Oh well thats that done. Great shots Whitey! (and when can we expect the spit?) Wink

no heavy cannon on USAF aircraft?

well, look at the AC-130 Spectre. i think that it has a 105mm cannon mounted on it's steerboard side together with an 23mm cannon and another cannon.

Ah I forgot about the AC130... Thats an exception...

Foo Fighter. I personally do not consider a 30mm cannon "heavy". Nor do I think that a 40mm cannon heavy. Lets say that anything above 50mm is a heavy cannon. Because at that sort of size it becomes uneconomical to have it on an aircraft when you can only have about 30 rounds to go with it.

Oh and another thing. .30mm is about the diameter of a full stop. so no. I do not think that that is heavy either. Wink

    Hi Whitey...!
    Fantastic pics.... Grin...!
For looks, I put it in the same catagory as the Apache AH 64 helicopter.
    Both purposefull looking aircraft.
The A10 makes a very individual sound, I heard one pass over my garden at low level a few years ago.
They always sound as though they are flying much faster than they really are due to the unusual sound of the engines...they hum...!
    (Love the runway textures).... Wink...!

    Cheers...

Lucky old Fozzer...the only time I've ever saw a fighter plane outside of an airshow was someplace up North...I just heard a big rumble, then a Tornado  streaked past...LOL.  It could've been either an F3 from Leuchars or a GR4 from Lossiemouth... Roll Eyes

My Uncle had a pretty cool encounter once, though...he was driving along a narrow road, lined with trees in the Highlands.  All of a sudden his car staring shaking and all he could hear was an almighty roar...then a Tornado belted by only 100 feet above him! Grin

This reminds me. Several years ago I visited Mold in North Wales for a RC (PSS Scale) slope soaring holiday. The flying site is on top of a steep hill, forget the name. Unbeknown to us the area is used for low-flying by the RAF. On the first day we were chased up the footpath to the hill by a couple of Tornados which crept up behind us. Wallop.................!  ???  Roll Eyes
Gave me quite a start I can tell you & we were looking straight up their jetpipes on full A/B as they continued on their way. I'm convinced they did it deliberately. Grin
We had to keep a sharp lookout while flying as the RAF Hawks, Jaguars & Tornados flew through the valley & were often lower than our models.  Roll Eyes

Speeking of storries mine has an A-10 in it. Ok here it is:

Well I was out camping last year at Sacandaga Lake. We had decied to get up early pack up then head out to Sand Island for the day. Anyway we where all out just jumping off the boat into the lake when I climb into the boat to make my next jump when i hear that tell tail noise. I look up and there are 2 A-10s at I would say around 2000'msl but my dad would say otherwise. They where in a desert camo type pait and in simi close formation. The one just dose this slow half roll, I though the guy a Salute and he returns to noninverted flight.

The GAU-8 is a 30mm, 7 barrel gattling gun used primarily in the air to ground role as a soft target killer and tank buster. The Avenger is the only fighter gattling gun that retains its brass for recycle after the slugs are fired. The gun fires 3,900 rounds per minute, with a mix of both armored piercing incendiary (API) and high explosive incendiary (HEI). The entire front one- third of the A-10 consists of the gun

Have you seen what that gun can do to tanks? Believe me, it's a heavy hitter.

I went to an airshow once and a Hog Driver showed me one of the rounds from the GAU-8. Its about as long as a pencil, and about an inch wide. The bullet is a depleted uranium spear encased in tin. What happens is the cannon fires (only a 2-3 sec burst because thats all it needs). The bullet fires and a hits a tank. Next the tin crumples on the outer shell, and the depleted uranium spear drives in through the tanks hull. It goes out the other side and impacts the dirt, no big deal right? Well here comes the bad part. As the spear goes in, the tin from the incasing gets sucked in, and stays inside the tank. I guess you can imagine what happens to anything or anyone inside, pretty gruesome.
