I have a query about the lessons and licenses in the simulator.  I have managed to get the PPL quite easily.  I acheived this with full realism within about two hours of purchasing the Sim.  The tight turn threw me at first but is quite easy after some practice. (I had been playing FS2k solidly for a few weeks lol)

My problems started when I moved onto the next license.  Rod always starts the lessons full of confidence, gives the first instruction and then that is it.  In the first lesson he tells me to rotate the heading bug to 340 degrees (or something) I do this and then nothing.  Not a peep.  For ten looooooong minutes I sit there and the man must have jumped out or something.

Without the lessons the exam makes no sense to me at all and I do not stand a chance.

I recognise that similar questions will have been raised in the past and would therefore suggest that it may be better to E-Mail me at wilf47@hotmail.com rather than clog up this forum.

Any advice on VOR navigation and how to pass these tests would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks in advance guys.

So let me get this straight (I am having trouble at this point as well).

You do a parallel entry into the holding pattern and then hit the KSEA VOR, do a standard rate right turn to 140 fly for 1 min, standard rate turn back to 320 and fly back over the KSEA VOR?

Once you fly back over the VOR then you would head off to the next beacon (NOLLA) and follow the chart for an ILS landing?

OK I think I understand that bit.  Now onto normal operation.  So when they say hold on the 140 radial that means that the return leg to the VOR is 140 degrees? Not the outbound leg?  So the radial they use is always the final leg of the holding pattern?  So you should end up back at the VOR after 4 minutes of flying the pattern?

My next question is what are the rules for leaving the holding pattern?  Do you just pull out of the pattern wehen you get clearance or do you have to fly over the beacon and then turn onto your next course?

Thanks for any help.  This is the only thing I have trouble doing for this rating.

Thank you Mr Tipster.  I managed to pass the checkride following those directions. Grin

However my second question still stands.  When doing a normal hold on a beacon, how do you depart the holding pattern?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks FStipster for the reply.  I am kinda new to the civil aviation world having concentrated all my flight simming efforts on combat flight sims - don't have to worry about holding patterns and such stuff in an F-16   Grin Grin  But now I have been hooked on doing things the correct way!  And the check rides are a real challenge that I need to overcome  Cheesy

While I understand how to get into a holding pattern I can find no references as to how to get out of one correctly.  While this is not a life or death matter, it frustrates me a bit that I can find no answers anywhere.

Oh well, hopefully someone will pass by this thread with the answer.  Fingers crossed Smiley

Good Flying to you kind sir!

The only check ride I've ever done in FS is the PP in FS2000. Having passed it I decided it was too much like hard work and never re-visited the things. Grin

Same here. The only checkride I passed was the private pilot in FS2000. I was gonna go for the FS2002 heckride, but once I heard that they were filled with bugs, i figured I was already qualified to fly Grin
