Okay, you've got a 900mghz machine and you're running W2K...  Let's start with a very important question -- how much ram are you running?  To be candid, CFS3 is a pretty demanding game -- and many people who have basic systems have had serious problems.  Much to my wife's chagrin, I built a new machine just for playing my flight simulations.  Hopefully, you won't need to go that far!

Air Geko

Asus A7N8X Deluxe, AMD2100, Geforce4 Ti4600, (2) 100gigWD HDs, Liteon DVD, Samsung CDRW, (sony 3.5), 1 gig Corsair 3200 DDR Ram, Antec TruePower 480. All settings on 4 = 75 FPS clear -- 50FPS when it's hitting the fan...

ok,  follow this out ... go to   MY COMPUTER( and right click on it) go to "properties" and ( left click )  the page that comes up is called device manager.... it will say how much RAM is installed.

email me for some great set up "notepad files" if interested. I also have pictures to show the basic settings pages to help if that would  be a + for you.

I love the game. you will too. it ran on my old AMD600 with 384 pc133 sdram thru a G4 mx440.
now  really sweet on my...
AMD1700+, 512 DDR2700, WD30g 7200rpm,G4 Ti4200 64m,(shadowed with system ram, in BIOS) and on a 56k USR Pro , Creative 5.1 sound,Logitech input & stick.

You mentioned shadowing your video card with system ram in BIOS. What is that and how do you do it? Will that increase performance?

Thanks

Perhaps I can help out a bit. I have a similar system and have gotten CFS3 to run problem free. Your processor is sufficient seeing I have an AMD 950mhz Duron. I'm going to go through all that worked for me so you may want to print this out. First uninstall CFS3. Download the new CFS3.1 patch (link to this in the SimV CFS main page) as well as the CFS3.1 no-CD Patch (available in the CFS3 Misc section here at SimV)

Now you will want to upgrade some things. If you don't already have it, go to the Microsoft web site and download DirextX9.0. Then go to the Nvidia web site and go into "Drivers" and "Driver Archive." Download and install the Nvidia Geforce vers 30.82 drivers. There are more updated drivers but the vers 30.82 work the best. Be sure to uninstall your other nvidia drivers before installing the new set.

Now that you have these installed enter your video cards additional properties menu menu. In Direct3D find the mipmap detail list and select "Blend."  Under Open GL turn off Vertical Sync. Also increase memory usage sizes. (16MB for Open GL, 70MB for Direct3D) This allows the card to use system memory along with the card's.

Now to play around inside CFS3. Full install the game then install the 3.1 patch and the no-CD patch. Now start up the game and go into display settings. Play arround with these settings until you get the desired result. I use 4 Aircraft, 3 Terrain, 2 Scenery, 2 Effects, and 1 Clouds but I only have a Geforce2. You may be able to go higher with your Geforce4. Oh yes and before you play the game, quit any non-essential utilities and turn off the Anti-virus program in the task bar before playing, this increases ram available to CFS3. I usually just keep sound settings and Norton Internet Security on while playing CFS3.

As for Ram, for SD system Ram have 320MB min, 512MB optimal installed. DDR ram might give better preformance. Remember that you cannot mix ram types or install Ram that is not compatible with your Mother Board. I highly recomend that Ram should only be installed by a qualified computer repair technition.

I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday. Wink&&The Rig: &&AMD Athlon XP2000+ Palomino, ECS K7S5A 3.1, 1GB PC2700 DDR, Geforce FX5200 128mb, SB Live Platinum, 16xDVD, 16x10x40x CDRW, 40/60gb 7200rpm HDD, 325w Power, Windows XP Home SP1, Directx 9.0c with 66.81 Beta gfx drivers

I would like to put my two cents in.
I think you have recieved adequate advice, Orenda has the right approach. I have a system that is twice that of yours and I couldn't get the game to run at first. One, thing GeForce cards are great as long as you set them properly. ATI seems to be better out of the box with default settings. A high RAM load is a must with this game. 512 Mb to start. I suggest you have as much RAM as your system is expandable to and I suggest you get a tuning program for your nVidia card. It's called Riva Tuner. Do a key word search and you will find it. That is a have if you use nVidia cards with this type of graphics intense programs.
