As a resident of Canada, and a proud Canadian, I regret to inform you that we will not be able to meet the promised support for the war on Iraq:
Our Liveral Government has listed canoes as an example of "culturally significant artifacts." As such, they are now protected under Canadian Law and cannot leave the country.
Cutbacks resulting from a falling crimerate have resulted in a total RCMP strength of only 3 members. None of these 3 men have fired a firearm at any time and are required for ceremonial duties in any event. We may be able to provide one man for the victory parade. You will be responsible for assuming any costs associated with the transport, feeding and care of any RCMP member assigned to victory parade duties.
The only flying squirrel we could find was, in fact, a US squirrel. It is now going through the refugee claimant process (pre-approved) which is extremely expensive as well as pointless. Also, as only one squirrel could be located it has been listed as an endangered species. We hope to locate at least one more refugee claimant squirrel (of the opposite sex) so that the species can be continued.
With sincere regrets,
The People of the Dominion of Canada.
btw Blade...
If the joke had been about the War in Iraq the joke would have been funny. Canada's support for the war on terrorism was quite serious:
Canada supplied a battalion of infantry, several state-of-the-art recce vehicles and a number of specialist sniper troops:
The snipers were directly involved in supporting US troops and the US Army has recommended several for combat citations.
A Canadian sniper set a new world record for the longest range sniper engagement.
The PPCLI were involved in a number of engagements with terrorist positions.
The Coyote recce vehicle was quickly made responsible for airfield security/camp security as it is head and shoulders superior to any recce vehicle fielded by any army.
Make fun of Canada and our military all you want...but please keep the facts straight. We tend to get touchy when our (generally) insignificant contributions are overlooked.

I really don't want to start an argument, but here's what I genuinly don't understand. This joke was posted and a moderator quickly jumped and got a little defensive about it, but jokes are constantly being posted making fun of President Bush, and a moderator has never stepped in before

It may just be me, but I've never seen a moderator step in other political jokes, just political discussions in the general and cafe boards

Andrew, it is politically correct to bash Bush and anything American. You are failing your civic duty if you do not. No matter what country you are from,
especially
if from the US or an ally.
As an American you are required to bash them. And as an American you are strictly forbidden from saying anything good or bad about any other nationality, group or country. Even good comments may be offensive to some or misconstrued.
As an American you are required to laugh and agree with jokes about America and the President. If you cannot you must at least remain silent. You absolutely may not complain about them saying anything about the US or the President. They have the right to, we do not have the right to reciprocate.
Nasty comments about white American males, conservatives, Republicans and fat asses are to be encouraged and subsidized by tax dollars.
If you fail to do so, you may be publicly ostracized. You may be expelled from school or college. Publically pilloried and have to register with the local authorities as a sex criminal for the rest of your life.
(Don't get in a sweat Ozzie. I am American and this is obvious satire. Or is it?)

If you read my original response you will note that I clearly state that I am a Canadian:
As a resident of Canada, and a proud Canadian, I regret to inform you that we will not be able to meet the promised support for the war on Iraq:
I close by stating:
Make fun of Canada and our military all you want...but please keep the facts straight. We tend to get touchy when our (generally) insignificant contributions are overlooked.
Half the remainder is a general satire of Canadian military capabilities in the same vein as the original post, the other half is a statement of what Canada has contributed.
Please also note, this was posted by a mod...but that mod is also a person. I have friends in the PPCLI, aboard ship in the Persian Gulf and throughout the Canadian Forces. I'm not likely to care much what is posted about G.W. Bush, but I am likely to care about stuff closer to my home.
Most posts made by mods are not "mod" posts...they are personal posts that are part of the discussion. As such you have to deal with all the normal weaknesses of regular people. Like this one... a mod who is also a retired member of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Oso, please don't get me wrong, I never said I agreed nor disagreed with jokes bashing President Bush, I just asked a genuine question based on observations.
If I wrote out all my opinions, i'd be starting the worst flame war known to international discussions, so I'm gonna stay away from it all

Silverfox - I agree with what you said 100%. I was not dialing in on you. I guess I was trying to say that is that everyone is too touchy right now about all things politic. The subject should be avoided by all. There are some other threads in which there is American bashing allowed and it should not be. Either everyone may comment with impunity, or no one can. It is not fair that Americans are stifled while others are allowed free rein.
I got in an arguement with one person on this site who was bashing the US and when I challenged it I was the bad guy.
I come here recently to join a communty of fellow flight simmers. And to make friends. If I wanted to argue politics I would go to Rush Limbaugh or G Gordon Liddy's sites. I do not.
I do not like comments about the US or Bush anymore than anyone else does about their country or leader.
I am very aware that I am risking being banned from this site. But if I do, I will not lose anything if it is anti-American then, will I?
I appreciate a good joke, even at my expense, but do not expect me to grin and bear it without the right to tell National jokes as well.
And I got some real good ones!
PS - Silverfox - if you notice you will find that most of my commentary in that post was US bashing.

Excuse me butting in guys.
Oso. As far as I'm concerned you're very welcome here. I make it a rule never to discuss politics or religion on this forum. People tend to have very strong feelings on these subjects which can cause terrible arguments even amongst close friends. Things are a tad sensitive right now & this is even more the case. IMHO
I'm now about to break my own rule just this once. Some people don't like their leaders being criticized or made fun of. I respect this but never understood it as bashing politicians is a national sport in my country. They're used to it & it comes with the job. If you saw some of the cartoons & caricatures published our newspapers every day it might surprise you. Most even enjoy it & often ask the authors for the originals. They have them framed to hang in their homes. You should hear what I call our beloved leader over breakfast with my cronies every morning. At least I'm free to do so without fear of being locked up. That's all I have to say on the subject.

Guys, lets not get all upset. Like Hagar says taking the mickey out of politicians is fair. They are public figures afterall. If anyone posts something nasty about Blair I'll be thrilled, it'd make my day as I'm not a fan of my Prime Minister, and I would suggest Megyessy, however I think I'm about the only person who knows who the Hungarian PM is, and believe me he gets a regular pasting in the media!!! Which of course delights me.
Andrew don't take things so to heart, I hear what you are saying and understand. You love your country, and it is a poor person who doesn't, but don't let these things get to you. Its all in fun, its just GW makes more gaffs than most and so more jokes get made. You should have been alive in the early 80s, every other joke was about Maggie and Ronnie, and they were funny, oh and I quite like our Fuhrer Margret! Better than that Welsh twit Kinnock (now an EU commissioner)!

Oh! OK then. I guess it is OK to post this then.
"A letter home from a marine with the multinational force in
Bosnia
Dear Dad,
A funny thing happened to me yesterday at Camp Bondsteel
(Bosnia): A French army officer walked up to me in the PX,
and told me he thought we (Americans) were a bunch of
cowboys and were going to provoke a war in Iraq. He said if
such a thing happens, we wouldn't be able to count on the
support of France.
I told him that it didn't surprise me. Since we had come to
France's rescue in World War I, World War II, Vietnam,
and the Cold War, their ingratitude and jealousy was due
to surface, again, at some point in the near future anyway.
I also told him that is why France is a third-rate military
Power with a socialist economy and a bunch of faggots
for soldiers. I additionally told him that America, being
a nation of deeds and action, not words, would do whatever
it had to do, and France's support, if it ever came, was only
for show anyway.
Just like in ALL NATO exercises, the US would shoulder
85% of the burden, and provide 85% of the support, as
evidenced by the fact that this French officer was shopping
in the American PX, and not the other way around.
He began to get belligerent at that point, and I told him if he
would like to, I would meet him outside in front of the Burger
King and whip his ass in front of the entire Multi-National
Brigade East, thus demonstrating that even the smallest
American had more fight in him than the average Frenchman.
He called me a barbarian cowboy and walked away in a huff.
With friends like these, who needs enemies?
Dad, tell mom I love her,
Your loving daughter,
Mary Beth Johnson, LtCol, USMC"

If someone would "whack" my country's leadership I would be very grateful.
Any "Sopranos" type accent I might have had during this post is purely relexive and shouldn't be seen as suggestive in any way.
On a serious note:
I would hope that everybody understands that while I am somewhat "touchy" about my country and her endangered military, I would never allow that to interfere in any way with how I mod the forums.
Disagree with me all you want.
I'd be more than a little strange if I served for 15 years defending the right to free speech...and then try to deny it to others.
That's the great thing about true freedom...it applies to everybody, not just those with power.
Oso...I actually understand your "Letter Home." After serving with CFE (Canadian Forces Europe) I can tell you that we always knew when an exercise had been planned for our base...
The French Army would arrive at CANEX (Canadian Forces Exchange). The standard joke was that they were there to prevent looting.
