(Psssst, hey Fozzer,, this was in your back yard)

I took off from KSFO (San Fran), took the obligatory, scenic loop around the bay and headed south down the coast. (C182RG)

At 4000 msl very near Half Moon Bay, I heard a crash noise. Kinda like when you land too hard or without the gear down.

Anyway,,  the engine quit and wouldn't restart. I had plenty of altitude so KHAF was no prob (in fact I  put the gear down early and even needed a notch of flaps)

After landing, I checked all the realism and system-failure settings,,,  NOTHING !

Is it possible,, that in one of the most scenic/effect rich parts of the world (FS2002 world), that I hit a bird  Shocked

Has anyone else experienced this ?

I guess I kinda wanna believe that the old Sim can still have a surprise up it's sleave  Wink

I don't think it has any bird strike options. Are you sure you haven't added a random failure engine at sometime, and its just kicked in? I had a Spit quit on me as I'd forgotten that I'd added one about 6 months earlier!

I've reinstalled the SIM since I last "played" with system failures,,anyway, I checked that when I landed,,

Oh well,, maybe it was a "code-loop-fluke" <sigh>

I was hoping it was a bird...

I've had this happen before too, many times wile doing VFR. I put it down to a bug in FS that makes the sim think the land is higher than it is.

I presume this, because as I'm on approach (with gear down) I've clouted an invisible hill and left tire marks!

That's intriguing enough to make me go back an criss-cross that are  (this time with gear down) and see if I can leave a skid-mark in mid-air    Shocked

(right over Half Moon Bay @ 4,000 msl),, just in case anyone else wnats to replicate  it..

Rick, Brett - Do either of you have terrain mesh installed?

It's quite posiible that duff levation points do exist on the default installation of course, but I was wondering if a terrain mesh installation had either failed to work properly or was conflicting with the default scenery perhaps.

Very interesting.
KSFO is my Naval aviation home base. I'll do carrier ops on the Connie from there. Mostly with the T-45 or the E-2C Hawkeye. But, I've never heard or seen anything like that happening.

S'gotta be a bug!

Regarding shut-down.
I've had it happen to me too. Just the other day I was on climb-out and lost power.(don't remember where I was though). There have been occasions where I would be at cruise and the the engine would just quit. each time I would go back inthe settings menu, double - check to see if I inadvertantly changed something. Nichts, Nada, zilch. One time it was so bad I gave up and re-installed FS.

I've just written if off as some kind of gremlin/bug.
