Why no real life liveries? (Read 514 times)

Why does FS come with no real life liveries?  I have two theories.

Airlines wanted MS to pay them for the use of their names and logos but they wouldn't.

MS wanted airlines to pay it for "product placement" but the airlines refused.  This might explain why airlines don't mind addons.

Or maybe the airlines just didn't want people taking screenshots of their planes in various stages of crashing.

I would think that the airlines would have to pay to be in FS2002 as a form of advertising. Airliners don't mind addons because it's basically free advertising.

I only pretend to know what I'm talking about. Heck, that's what lawyers, car mechanics, and IT professionals do everyday. Maybe it's because the airlines don't want MS making a profit by using their logos in a commercial product???

I'm just speculating.....

Good question. If they can use real liveries in train sim(BNSF, Amtrak) why not in flight sim?

You summed it up in your post at the start of the thread.

Which way round it is I don't know.

On he one hand, I've heard of airlines forcing VAs to stop using their logos  as infringemen of registered trade marks Roll Eyes, and on the other, Mr Gates is never one to miss a dollar making opportunity.

Maybe it's a combination of the two.

I heard somewhere that MS had a FS forum but I can't find it.  I'm determined to get to the bottom of this.  In the next week I'll send emails to MS and a bunch of airlines - anyone want to speculate what the results will be?

I'll bet anyone 2-1 that I get a bunch of nice "Thank you for your inquiry but please go away" replies.

If I was a betting man, I'd say that if you were to get any replies other than the type you've described, they'd go along the following lines:

Airlines: Use of our registered trademarks and liveries is only by prior consent and agreement with us. This is not usually granted where a commercial enterprise is concerned:

Microsoft: Airlines refuse to allow us to do so. (Read - they want paying for it or refuse to pay Microsoft for what they'd perceive as advertising).
