Cruise speed in the Beech Baron? (Read 908 times)

With all the talk about the Beech Baron and the RTW flights I thought I'd try one one my own. No races - I'm in BOTA and may be a little over my head.
So I fired up my Beech Baron 58 for the first time but could only get a max speed of 145 kia, when the manual says cruise is 200. Admittedly, that's only at 15,000 but I can't think 5,000 feet would make that much difference.
All my settings seem fine: gear up, flaps 0, cowl flaps 0, max throttle, but only 145 KIA. Any ideas?

If that's
indicated
airspeed it's probably right for that altitude. Turn the GPS on for ground speed.

You are absolutely correct and I am kicking myself for not thinking of that.

is it possible to legally obtain the beach baron without buying the fs 2002 pro edition? I wanna do the RTW thing also (or attempt it) Yet I am struggling to find a suitable prop plane, but from what I've heard the Baron sounds the best.

Not that I know of. It's one of the few default aircraft that, as far as I know, has never spawned a freeware equivalent. Personally - I think it's by far the best of them.
As I mentioned in a different thread to a similar post, you might consider Fred Choate's Piper Aztec or possibly Chuck Dome's Duke B60. Had the latter been a Gmax aircraft, it would have been my first choice over the Baron. As it is, it's a VERY nice FSDS model. Chuck's said he's doing an FSDS2 version soon.
