Anyone into classical music I just want to know who your favourite composer is and your favourite piece.

My favourite composer is Modest Mussorgsky and his fabulous piece "Night on Bald Mountain" but it has to be the rimsky-korsikov version.

Oh and I really really really hate Mozart  Lips Sealed

I rather like Wagner myself, nothing quite like flying a Huey with Ride of The Valkyries blasting out of the stereo!
Bach and Beethoven are okay too.

not really into classical, but I like flight of the Valkyries when flying in Nam. Also I like Calssical Gas (its a guitar piece so I supose it dosn't really count).

My all-time favourites are Sir Edward Elgar, followed by  J.S.Bach, G.F.Handel, Mozart, Pachabel, Henry Purcell, John Dowland, etc....
...because...
I play their pieces on my piano, harpsichord, lute, guitar, recorders, flute, etc...
Me...
A man of many instruments... Wink...!
..and a love of Classical music...

as a child i use to like Vivaldi alot, don't listen to much classical music anymore

Careful with that Stratocaster, cause if you stay in that purple haze for too long, you'll wind up in a manic depression as you walk all along the watchtower looking for a foxy lady........move over Rover and let Jimi take over so I can go downtown to shoot my old lady and get my EXPERIENCE ....

J.S. Bach - Absolutely the father of western music.

Vivaldi - Would Bach have been as great without him?

Wagner - Revolutionized opera.  Too bad it died immediately thereafter.

Beethoven - Overrated but nice symphonies.

Mozart - Everything he touched sounds great.

Edward Greig - Peer Gynt suite No 1.
especially "Morning Mood" and "The Hall of the Mountain King" ahh hell, all of it.

Chopins' "Pollinaise" (spelling?)

Can't say I'm into bach and all that baroque stuff myself but I can see why people do.

I have to disagree about the mozart I'm sorry but aaaargghh it irritates me its sooooooo fancy and decorational. It sounds so simple like any of his violin pieces but bloody impossible to play. Of course you're entitled to your opinions.

I see Wagner is popular I like it but only if it is the purely instrumental version when people sing I believe it ruins it.

I have always been partial to a bit of Rachmaninov especially prelude in G minor (op.23 no.5) If you aint heard it listen to it nice an bouncy rythnm thats pure genious.

Just out of interest how many of you have heard  Night on Bald Mountain?

You'll find this alot. People being quite familiar with a piece because it has been in a famous movie or TV show but not realising what it is.

For example: William Tell Overture = The Lone Ranger Theme
Most people would recognise Fluer D'elise
Also one of my favourites "Morning Mood" would be recognised by most people as it has been used thousands of times.
Television adds seem to have been using "Gillbert & Sullivan" pieces for ages and most people would recognise parts of HMS Pinafore or The Macardo, although the words they know would be different.  Grin Grin

Of course there is also Strauss' Blue Danube. Alot of people may even know it's name when they hear it.................lol Grin

It's was an insiduous plot by hard core classicists to get people to like classical music .... I admit - the cartoons got my "hooked on classics" and from there ...

Suffice it to say that I listen to a variety of music, not necessarily classics, but "Barren Rocks of Aden" is a  nice tune.  Now if my wife would let me buy a chanter ...  I tried to convince her that there's Andalusian blood in my ancestry, but she says no to bagpipes...Sad

Good to hear.

I'm into all kinds of music ranging from pop to rock (proper rock like led zeppelin) to metalica to classic.

Classical will always be the real music though.

Some good movie music:

2001 - A Space Odyssey - great treatments of Also Sprach Zarathustra and Blue Danube.  Other wierd stuff cuz Kubrick was a classical music freak.

Clockwork Orange (Kubrick) - Beethoven's 9th like you've never heard it before.  Walter/Wendy Carlos later released a complete version of the synthesyzer symphony.  Also, Pomp and Circumstance #4 (not the one you're used to).

Overlooked but great -

Antonio Vivaldi - Gloria.  There's a story behind the fact that it's all female voices.

Bach - Concerto for 2 violins (BMV 1043).  Awesome!

I must admit I have a very strong liking for what might be called "Chamber Music" in the UK or US.

Basically, but not exclusively, string quartets. There have been a number of suites and odd pieces composed in the last 50 years.

There is also an Aussie named John Williams who is reknowned as one of, if not the  best, classical Guitarist in the world. He lives in the UK, but still has his instruments made by a bloke who lives in the bush about 200 miles from Sydney. Williams has done some beautiful albums of both compostions especially for guitar and his renditions of other beautiful, older pieces with his guitar/s along with a string quartet or similar arrangement. He has and does tour Europe extensively, at least lately.
One of the best is his take on "Cavatina".  8) Grin Cheesy Wink

I agree I've never been into chamber music or any music from that period but there are a few nice piece that came out of the era (mainly from bach.)

I forgot to mention I like modern classical (if you catch my drift.) Mostly shostakovich (is that how it's spelled ??? ).

My favourite player is Martha Argerich (absolutely brilliant tho only person who can play Rachmaninov's £rd piano concerto properly apart from Horowitz.)

My favoritre is "Blue Danube" (1867) by Johann Strauss Jr.(1825-1899).

Most anything by:

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791).

Ludwig van Beethoven. (1770 - 1827).

Richard Wagner (1813-83), like Ozzy...I got rather fond of  Ride of the Valkyries in Vietnam.

George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), I really like "Messiah" Composed: August 22 - September 14, 1741

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), I particularly like his harpsichord and organ works.

So fair to say I like just about all classical music. Grin
