i was just watching a DVD on the United Triple7 and the flight it takes is the O'hare to heathrow route, but the thing that caught my attention was the fact it had a 3 man cockpit crew, i thought it was only meant to carry a 2 man crew or is it just something i have missed before?
thanks for any help

i'm not exactly sure, sort of there to back up the F/O on the radios in an emergancy and he was also doing the map plotting and checking. and also a few of the radio calls along the way. my guess is it was to maybe take some stress off the two up front. but he wasnt just taking a ride in the jumpseat as he was doing the work and was also on the flight back a day later
very puzzling

what i know for sure, is that the KLM has 3 pilots in their 747's. a commander, a first officer or co-pilot and a second officer or co-co-pilot. when the captain goes to have a nap, the F/O takes over his job and the S/O becomes the F/O. they always take young pilots for this job (S/O) so they can make some hours, but they actually don't fly alot. they aren't allowed to fly below a certain altitude and stuff like that. (pretty boring if you ask me) i know this for sure cos i was almost one of them
this is perhaps the reason why you saw three pilots during your long haul flight. but i don't know if they use this kind of crews with the 777. of course it also depends on the airline.

I believe thats KLM 's policy on all jumbo jets, but I still have no idea, and nobody at work can see any rhyme or reason to why the 3rd person was in the cockpit. The 777 really could be flown with one person, but is advertised as a 2 man crew.

there is something that sort of might be a reason. maybe because they had the guy in there filming they thought it would be an idea for security to have an extra guy in there incase something were to happen
