Not sure if this was posted in here yet, didn't see it on the first page but the guy posting these pictures was a former F-18 Navy pilot. Jim Campisi is beta testing it, I've been waiting for ever for this release. I hope it comes soon  Shocked

Sorry guys, not my shots. There were from the AVSIM forum of the thread I posted. The guy flying Hornet was an actual F-18 driver who now flies for Delta. In fact the skin on it was his unit.

He said this thing is right on. I believe he mentioned in that thread that he believed it would be FREEWARE.

A Blue Angel Skin would be very nice  8)

He even has a 1979 GMC Jimmy (with AM radio!!!) and a 1985s' (I think 1985) Corvette.

We once managed to hold 18 children in the Jimmy. Another time, we managed to fit about 19 high school students in one of those old Volkswagen vans. The funny part is we passed by a police cruiser and one of the guys waved, then the cop waved back.

LOL we are really going off topic.

Yes all Naval aircraft have to have folding wings. You can see the hinge lines on a top shot of the Hornet. The F-14 is nice because the wings have an "oversweep" setting allowing for some tight parking on the limited deck space on aircraft carriers.

It's nice to have an actual Hornet driver test the plane within FS2k/2k2 limited simulation parameters.

Hello guys,

I'm glad you like my F18 model, even from these screenshots only.

I thought that it will be finished last year, but there were also another important things, e.g. like this:
...
http://lisner.unas.cz/matous

You know, these delays are sometimes a destiny of freeware projects  ... Smiley

But now I would like to attend to this project again and finally finish it.
It's hard to say any exact date, but because the major part of this project is completed, I can say it could be rather weeks than months ...

In the meantime you can enjoy several latest screenshots:
- 2D panel ( thanks to Aeyes from http://www.cockpits.nl for his background image, Eric Marciano for his HUD and radar http://emarciano.free.fr and to thanks to Paul Schwerdtfeger for his MFD gauges )
- 3D cockpit ( there were added some new details )

Screenshots of the external model ( "walkaround" ) were created using Active camera ( http://www.anticyclone.be )

... ... ... ...

... ... ... ...

More and larger screenshots are here: http://airspace.uhk.cz/mlk/msfs/f18/f18_1.htm

I'm feeling even more excited about this than I am about the B-1B!!! Cheesy  Excellent work!

Can I ask one thing, though...does the Hornet have folding wings or am I right in thinking only the Super Hornet has folding wings? ???

Hoping to be flying that bute soon... 8)

Yes the F/A-18A-F all have folding wings. Although the Navy no longer uses the A/B variant, I beleive NASA does though.

The polygon count should be quite acceptable, I think. External model with gear down has cca 6500 polygons ( similar polycount has e.g. default FS2002 planes ) and internal model ( 3D cockpit ) has cca 3500 polygons ( including some parts and effects from external model, which are visible from the cockpit ).

Wow, this is almost too good to be true!  This plane meets everything on my list! Shocked
  • Good panel
  • Has VC
  • Doesn't have pilot figure in VC
  • Poly count close to stock
  • Excellent textures

There has to be a catch, I've never downloaded an FS2002 plane that was perfect.  There has to be something wrong with it!  There are two that usaually put me off.  Does it have:
  • Aileron co-ordinated pilot?  (head moves with stick)
  • Really, are the textures really that good?  Could you post a close up shot of the textures?  I'm still a bit skeptical they look that good in the sim.

If you answer no to those two, well, this is just something I'm going to have to see to believe!  Or better put, fly to believe! 8)

A perfect FS plane could be quite subjective thing, couldn't? Smiley

My model of course won't be perfect for everyone.
And how about some flight characteristic in your list?
This is also importatnt for me.

Pilot's head moves with rudder movement in this version.

And here are several screenshots, which I created for you. From close look the textures aren't of course so sharp, but too high texture resolution isn't much optimal IMHO. I would like to have my models reasonably balanced.

Here are thumbnails:
... ... ...

And here are the originals, 1280x1204, non modified raw screenshots:

http://airspace.uhk.cz/mlk/msfs/f18/shots7/image01.jpg

http://airspace.uhk.cz/mlk/msfs/f18/shots7/image02.jpg

Ahh yes...but unfortunately none of the F-18's in CAF Colours can hold a candle to this exceptional F-18 model. But hey,  if there isn't any interest in it then i suppose theres nothing i can do Sad

Slider, don't worry about CAF colours, maybe I'll do it myself. And if not, I'm also working on "repaint kit" with texture templates, so someone could create it easily then.

Milan,

Congrats on the bambino, how are the sleepless nights effecting you?

The '18 looks great so far, how are the afterburners controlled?
In those shots it looks like you are on approach with the 'dirty' configuration but the afterburners are still blazing away. Are they assigned to the throttle or are they selectable via a light switch?

Looking beautiful all the same!

Good luck with her!

Thanks for your congratulations, my nights aren't so bad as I expected initially Smiley

The afterburner effect is controlled by engine RPM.
( and it's not static but has dynamic animation, which looks quite interesting, I hope - you can hardly see it from this static screenshot unfortunately )
It's showing up on the screenshots above, just to be visible on screenshots and for your pleasure Smiley

No, I never said that ...

And does really matter, which program was used for its modelling? Smiley

I actually created the basic 3D model in AutoCAD and 3D Studio. Then assembled it first in Aircraft Factory 99 ( so this the simplified FS98/CFS1 version ) and later then  I assembled it in FS design Studio.

And I have already plans for assembling it in Gmax too, with some reworking and improvements.
But some effects cannot be simply create in Gmax/Makemdl, e.g. the vapour vortices or afterburner efefct controlled by engine RPM.

So the FSDS version has its own advantages.

Milan

Milan,

I hate to correct you, but I've got xml gauges on my Eurofighter which control afterburner display with throttle position (or engine rpm, whatever you prefer) and also wingtip vorticies which come on at certain g forces....

And it's a GMax model....

It's OK, Dave Smiley
If it's something useful, I'm glad I know about it.
But the afterburner control with throttle position could be done in Gmax itself, using keyframe animation, couldn't?
And the wingtip vortices are also independent effect, I was thinking rather about the second vapour effect, which isn't a FS effect, but textured polygons displayed under certain conditions - and these conditions aren't available in Gmax/makemdl ( I heard somewhere, that these conditions could be used in Gmax models, but it seems it's  a kind of "black magic" for me ... Smiley).
If the xml gauge you mentioned, is for public, could you send me it, so I can look at it?  -  mlk@volny.cz

I had several requests for CAF skin. Because I promised it, here is the result. I hope, you will like it. Now I have some time again for FS design, so I hope that I make some final progress on Hornet model.

Here are 2 shots, especially for you, SLIDER  Smiley

GrinBeautiful job MLK, Love the fake canopy painted on the underside that the Canadian Air Force use.  It would be difficult for an enemy pilot to tell the difference.  Can't wait to fly this one!!!!   Grin Grin Grin

WOW! Shocked. Completely speachless, I LOVE IT. Will it have an opening canopy, and how close is it to being completed? Cheesy

Hi,

I know it seems, that I forgot about my freeware Hornet model, but it isn't dead.
I had just another priorities - I have not only a second child, but also a new job, so I hope you will understand it. So the Hornet model was just sleeping in my virtual hangar.
Thanks to your mails and messages in several forums, I restored its development. Recently I finished several things on 3D model, panel and textures, which I want to complete.

It seems, that now remains only a documentation and installation package. Again - I can't tell you any exact release date, but I hope that your waiting won't be so long ...

I created also 3 new attractive skins for some fun flying - it could be at least a little compensation for your long waiting ...

Milan

I have a feeling the payware F-18s will be hard to sell when this beaut comes out  Wink. Those schemes look great, i especially like the first blue camo. Milan's done a fantastic job, well done

PS:Milan, did you convert the model to Gmax from FSDS or is the final result gonna be FSDS all the way?

PSS: Just a suggestion; you should change the canopy glass to make it more shiny and transparent. it looks...well..a tad unreal and too dark...just a suggestion though

Great job Milan Wink
Expect to see it with the Israeli Air Force too  (with your permission after it will be released of course) Grin
Oz is right, the canopy sould be as he say, but a part from that it looks great and I've been following the model's progress from first time I heard on it with great interest.
