What was the first aircraft you ever saw or remember seeing?

The first one I remember was in 1946 at Camp Gordon, a US Army "camp" at Augusta, Ga.  I was 4 and we had just joined my Dad, who was in an intelligence unit there and was soon to be discharged.  My brother and I would run out in the yard when we heard one flying over (still doing it! Embarrassed Cheesy)  The first one I remember was a big silver bird, probably a DC-3 (or C-47).

Surely I must have seen them before that, because I was born on the coast of Ala, and the flat coastal plane of Ala & the Fla panhandle was dotted with airfields....But this is the first one I remember...and still one of my favorites! Grin

What are your early aircraft memories?

Don't exactly remember the first one I saw because I probably was seeing them since I was first able to see Grin

Reason being that my grandparents live under the ILS approach path to Glasgow airport (EGPF) runway 23

One of the first airplanes I remeber seeing up close was the BUFF at an airshow, god damn those things are huge Smiley

I could go on for hours but I save you the pain Wink

1st seen (that I remember): Eastern Air Lines Constellation or Pan Am DC-6.

1st ride in: Eastern Air Lines DC-6

1st "furrin" plane I remember - Caravelle, (Air France) F-BJTA.  Used to pass over my high school on final to San Juan Intl Airport (SJU), late 60's

1st remembered is a 707 I rode in from HR to JFK at the age of 3...... still remember it & I got a host of goodies including a metal model of the jet, a hard cover childrens book on the BOAC fleet & a trip to the cabin. I think they've toned down a child's experience now ..... (like nothing + full fair...  Grin )

The first one I remember as a kid was an old Air Force jet the town bought and put in the park for us rug rats to climb around on. Unfortunately the hooligans in the town tore it up to the point that it had to be removed.

It was either an F-86 or an F-84. I don't recall that far back. I remember it had a nose intake, single engine. I don't remember whether the wings were swept or not. I was so small, I could barely climb into the durned thing. Smiley Smiley Grin Grin It was at a park near Brownsburg, IN. USA. It's probably Mountain Dew cans now.

The first plane I saw was a 747 when I was nine months old. The first I remember is a 727. I was driving by the aerodrome and I saw it take off, Ididn't really know how or why bu I fell in love with planes from that day on...

For me, it was probably a Boeing 737.  I have lived about a mile or 2 from the airport in my hometown my entire life and it always has 737's taking off and landing.

I remember the first plane I saw was actually at the first airshow I went to.  Then I was at the tender age of 4. I remember walking across the airfeild with my grandpa when a pair of F-104 Starfighters flew over doing a low level pass.  I still vividly remember hearing the rumble of jets heading toward me then becoming suddenly louder as they passed overhead (absofreakinlutly exhilerating  Cheesy ).  I guess that moment is what made me love aviation from that point forward.

The first planes I saw was in 1939 when running home from school in South London dodging the German bombers  who were busy razing my area to the ground!
We all evacuated shortly after to the country-side to avoid certain death.
A lot of my friends and neighbours were killed in that onslaught.
I spent the remainder of the war in Herefordshire among the cows and sheep, something we never saw in London!
...stopped here ever since, beautiful County!

Here endeth the first part of the history of the "Fozzers"... Grin....!

Although I've lived near an airport all my life the first aircraft I actually remember seeing was at the old Gatwick Airport. I believe it was the first post-WWII SBAC display. My Dad took me when I was 5 or 6 years old but I'm not sure of the exact date. Late 40s or early 50s.
Yes I was young once. My Dad has a lot to answer for. LOL

The aircraft was a B-17. It looked huge to me & dwarfed the tiny aircraft parked underneath. This was a one-off designed & built by the apprentices at Lockeed Aircraft Corp. It was so small the pilot flew it from the prone position strapped head-first on top of the the fuselage. The rudder pedals were near the tail. I've never seen a pic of this aircraft & don't remember the name. Maybe Felix can help.  ???

My first recollection is of a Tiger Moth - my Dad paid for me to have a flight when I was about 7.     After that I can remember being allowed out of our classrooms to see a Vampire Jet come over and later a Canberra Bomber.   Time flys ?

The first plane I "saw" was a piedmont airlines 737. Granted, I was about 8 months old, but there's a picture of me looking at the plane and drooling. Prophetic, I guess, because I still do that Smiley

The one that sticks out in my mind the most is the B-1 that decided to do a few low, lazy circles over my high school during marching band practice. I've always wondered what exactly those guys were doing.

I remember I was on a flight on a 747 when I was 6. Even more suprising it was my uncle flying the plane, so my mom told the stewardess to tell the captain that his sister is onboard. So, when she came back the stewardess took me into the cockpit.

If I become a commercial pilot,  I would take a kid in the cockpit on every flight.

Having lived off the end of Carswell AFB in the late 50s I believe the first plane that really made an impression as the first plane I had ever seen it would have to be A GREAT BIG ole B-36. Talk about loud. One dropped an airspeed calibration instrument through the roof of Brewer High school about 3 Miles from where I lived. I think it was the only thing they ever dropped from the plane. The next frightening thing was the B-58 I met some pilots years later and boy do they have some stories to tell about that screamer.

Well the first aircraft that I saw was  helicopter a UH-60L Blackhawk at my local airport when I lived in London, Kentucky when I was 1 year old.  By my moms stories I ran up to it screaming "Heliplopter" and I actually ran up to the pilots beside of it and they picked me up and put me in the pilots seat,  I still have the picture of me sitting in the seat and the flight helmet looking like it swallowed my head Smiley If I ever find a scanner I'll upload it and post it here.

Ha Ha, I'm 12  8) 8) 8)

The first aircraft I remember seeing was an Air Lingus Boeing. There is a road at the end of the runway at Dublin Ariport (Ireland) that my dad always brings me to. You can park and watch the planes take off over your head!!!!! I love planes, and I'm going to be a pilot when I grow up. I have FS 2002 and pedals and a yoke and fly all over the world. I even visit my cousins in England, it is that realistic!!!  Grin Grin I always was allowed into the cockpit of jumbo's when I was flying, but after September 11th, I have never been in one since (except on my Simulator). It's not as if I'm going to put a gun to the pilots head, come on  Angry Angry Angry Angry. Ah well, got to go.

SmileyThe first plane was a constellation. I live next to an airport so I see alot of military and non-military aircraft. I fell in love since then. I used to go to McGuire AFB in NJ to see their airshows. Where I live (close to West Point) we have C-5a's based as well as C-130 refulers. Recent spots include State police Bell 430, commanche, huey's, and Sirkorsky s-76. Last summer a lot of f-16's.

The Lockheed Constellation made a big impression on me, too.  When I lived in Birmingham, AL, (US) at age 8, my father used to park us near one at the municipal airport.

Huge then, they would be totally dwarfed now by the Lockheed C5-A Galaxy, the largest and loudest plane in North America....Wow, what a plane!  Sounds like you've got some excellent spotting territory Smiley.

The first airplane I remembered seeing was one in a bunch of Japanese biplanes flying low over the city of Manila, Philippines  when the Japanese first attacked the islands in '41 during the "big war". On the other hand the first US airplane I saw was the B-24 Liberator back in '44 during the initial phases of the liberation of the Philippines. NOTE: Never saw another Japanese plane after that.

Amazing Shocked.  I hope the lack of other Japanese plane sightings means that you got the heck out of there!  Not a nice place to be from Dec. 41 to Oct. 44, for Americans and Filipino allies anyway Cry.  Surely you didn't stay in the Philippines until 44 ??? ???.

Doug C-3:

My family and I stuck it out in the city of Manila throughout the Japanese occupation. We lived about two block from the University of Sto. Tomas where all US citizens were interned by the Japanese for the duration of the war. The reason I saw few Japanese planes after my initial sighting was perhaps because the city was declared an "open city" but above all the Japanese must've needed their aircraft somewhere else. Remember that six months after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese were already on the defensive. No I never got out of the Philippines until I joined the US Navy in '55. Been here ever since. This is my country now.

Hi, BH!,

I'm sure I speak for everybody when I say:  We're mighty proud to have you! Wink

And I can't wait to read about your experiences in the Philippines when the final draft is published, as you mentioned in the "General Discussion, Who was in the military?" topic.

Best wishes,

Why do you all see those interesting stuff flying around?? LOL

The first I've seen and remember is probably a Cessna Skyhawk... What a boring plane.... Grin

The first airshow I ever went to, was at CFB Shearwater, and I remember riding on an APC (M113 probably) and yelling to my dad over all the noise "Daddy, I want to go home NOW!!". This was when I still didn't have much love for the tremendous noise the F-15C doing solo created Grin I felt releived when I saw the F-15C climb up, and the noise go away, but a few secs later, it comes straight down, and with even more noise Grin I just love the F-15C Grin Grin

The most recent airshow was over at NAS Lemoore 2 years ago!? That's quite a ways back. LOL. I saw the SuperBug fly, quite impressive I might add, but I was even more impressed by the F-16 flyby done on the 2nd day Smiley

I hope to go to NAF Atsugi on the 28th this month and go see some Navy again... Grin

the first plane i remember seeing was a  probably a 737 i live near newcastle airport so you see every plane making their final approach i think that was the reason why i got intrested in aviation because i can just sit outside and watch all of the aircraft

The first plane that I remember would Have to be The F-4 Phantom. However, since my Dad and I love Airplanes I guess that I Have seen quite a few. I even remember seeing an SR-71 taking off from Nellis when I was about 10.  Grin

Hey, Bonzonie,

I am stationed at NAS Lemoore right now and in 1996 I was stationed at Atzugi. I miss that place. I miss the Georgia Coffee's and the food there.  Sad

Wow!

Atusgi must have been too hot and humid for you. tons of mosquitoes to go around!

I'm going to miss the 'Cat when it goes away.. Hopefully I'll be seeing it for a couple more years......

I see Japanese RF-4 and F-4EJ "Kai"s sometimes as well. They are LOUD!

I saw a C-5 a while back, and I loved the sound of those engines. it gave a distinct "roar".

I have no clear memory about the first plane I ever saw, but I guess it would have been an older type of air liner flying from East Midlands airport. I do remember a small company flying DC-3's from there that I used to see a lot when I was a kid, so I guess that could well have been my first one.

Believe it or not, I don't really remember the type, but I was taken as a very young Geordie, to see some gliders landing on a field, near to where I lived in South Sheilds. I think they were Cadets of a sort, but that is not the one I really do remember seeing.....It was the Fairey Delta 2 which I saw fly high overhead ......World speed record holder around that time too.....next one I do remember, is when I left England on a Bristol Britannia, and as we taxied out, I can remember, very vividly seeing the glasshouse front of a Stratocruiser in BOAC colours.....which incidentally, is the airline I was being flown out by. After being in Canada for a few months, my parents bought a house in the flight path of Malton airport and we had the good fortune to move in next door to a person working on the biggest project of the time and see the Avro Arrow on many occaisons.....

Wow, that's a very impressive collection.  With all those "greenhouses" you could do horticulture when you're not flying Wink.

It would be nice if you could post pictures of them some time.

first one i remember hearing were french Mirages somewhere in southern france.

First flight of my whole life was on a 747-400, and a DC-9 clone in the same vacation.

The thing i will remember is one of the rare tupolev visits to schiphol.

Whe i rode my bike from school to my home i saw the unusual (it's mostly 737, 757, and fokker F-27/50) shape of a Tu-154, with its big brown smoke cloud trailing behind it.
Normal ATC route is (depending on wind conditions): departures (01R) to the north over the village where i live, arrivals (19R) near the eastern edge of Alkmaar (where my school is)

My father rode a Tupolev (or ilyushin) in 1976 for a trip to Baku, and with a company day-off held the controls of a cessna for a few minutes

Russian planes: IL-76 (all standard length ones),  Tu-154 and Il-62, Tu-134 and An-24RV&&&&AI flightplans and repaints can be found here

First plane I remember was in the mid eighties, somewhere near RAF Mildenhall and was bright red (memorable eh?). Anyway it was a Hunter (even more memorable - we know how to make good looking aeroplanes this side of the channel, I think G-BOOM, a 2 seater).

The first aeroplane I flew in was a DH Dragon Rapide (nice) from Sywell I think when I was about 3 (before seeing the Hunter) but I don't really remember that. The first aeroplane I FLEW would be the DHC Chipmunk. Solo the C152 and the fastest the Sepecat Jaguar. 8)

The first aeroplane I remember hearing would be the Vulcan or the Lightning...  Smiley

TAROM (Romanian) airlines TU-154 is the aeroplane I most wanted to get off ('cos one was ill you know...)  Undecided

Sorry for boring you all

My first plane to fly on and see was a SAAB 340. I was about four at the time and I was going to California with my grandparents to visit my aunt. It was very loud and very turbulent, but it was great.
