I was recently going through some old floppys & found a backup of 'baby simviation' - known as 'the strip'
It was hosted on one of those hosts that boast 'unlimited traffic & space' for about $20 pm. The date was Sept 1998 & each section had one page. At the time I got my files from a setup called 'the mining corporation' checked 'em all out & reconfigured them for easy install & thought it would be fun to set up a site with good files, easy navigation & instructions ..... I knew very little about it apart from my own experience of 10 years of being a MSFS fanatic (yes - since 1988 ) & a real life pilot within very restricted airspace who fantasised about what only FS can offer.
It was like looking at a picture of my baby ( although my real baby is .. just... a little more beautiful.... !!)
If anyone is interested I may pack it up - or post it as a kind of momento - for old times sake - .........
I seem to remember Grumpy1 (Doug) started to write to me around this time & he became the best partner anyone could ask for.

Wow, that brings back some memories Pete.
It's like looking at some long-lost photos. Not sure I was around here then either.
I started off with CFS1 & didn't get FS98 until much later.
I first found The Strip sometime after Jan 99 which was when I purchased CFS1.
Simviation was born only a few days afterwards. I became involved just before the Easter weekend of that year. April 99? Surely not, it seems like only yesterday. Not sure we had a forum at that time. Things have certainly changed.
Oh dear, where's my tissues. I've come over all sentimental.

WOW, thats even before I got here. I remember first comming here when I got CFS1 from my firend Adam about 2 or 3 years ago, I think it was in Sept. 1999 when I met him in my first week of high school. I guess that was about a year after this all started. I can't believe I've been around here for that long.

The Strip looks like a great site. Things were so much simpler then. I wish I'd found your site back then and got in on FS before the information overload and grown with the FS boom. Having just started, I'm pretty overwhelmed by it all now
Thanks for all you did back then, Pete, and all you are doing now.
I presume you're going to put the Strip link in a more prominent place that this thread ???

I think it was early 2000 when I first found simviation and its cool to see how it all got going.
Pete I haven't done very well with my controller for some time but have a new mb to go in and some other goodies due so I hope soon I can be back to my original ways soon. I've been very quiet over the last year though and seeing this thread makes me sad because I've missed so much but happy because it shows all the to me originality and strong foundations of the best.
I remember your 1st Gazelle with fondness and have aquired a great colllection of aircraft thanks to simviation.
Part of the spirit of simviation is the openess and coolness of the huge cummunity it's/you've spawned. Long may it continue and your dreams come true buddy.
When shooting for the moon, even if you miss you still land in the stars. Never lose heart, always be ready and stay open to new things. You do these things well, so carry on the great site work and thank you.
Heres looking ahead and up

Gosh! I thught Simviation started out as Simviation. I remember the night I found Simviation...
Boredom overran the boy as he sat in the livingroom, wondering what he could do on this late summer's eve. He lowered the legprop of the recliner and proceeded towards the computer room. The farmiliar sign-on noises filled his ears. This sound used to annoy him, until he finally got used to it. He had gotten FS 2000 for Christmas, and had been getting his extra aircraft from another site.
He had always had an interest in airplanes, but had only known that FS existed only when he opened up that heavy package from under the tree, while his mother's eyes gleamed bright, knowing she had purchased the right gift for her son.
Once online, he commenced a long, hard search for a decent aircraft site, when he saw a link on about the tenth page, among all of the others that for some reason alien to the boy told him to click there. When he did click there, he discovered a whole new world that he would be involved with for two years, and many more to come.
Thanks, Pete!

I didn't have a nearly "poetic" discovery of simviation. My soon to be best friend (whom I had just met at the time because I was attending a new school) introduced me to the M$ FS games thorugh CFS1 and told me about this great site. I can safely say the first addon I downloaded for an FS game was from here.

That looked like a trip back into the past!!
Too bad I wasn't involved with add-ons yet at the time. Came only when "The Strip" got the name "Simviation", and I believe I found this wonderful place when I typed "F-104" in Altavista seach.....
What did I find?? I found loads and loads of high-quality files found nowhere else, of course a lot of good friends.

Ah well, all things start from somthing small dont they?
Pete maybe renaming to 'when you first found simviation' would sound better, seems that everyone is talking about when they first loged onto the site... and im no exeption...hehe
Must of been about this time last year, work experiance at RAF Shawbury. I was complaining about an add-on that had 2 2k aircraft and cost about £30. One of the guys mentioned your site and i found myself a few 747's, a spit'IX and a C-17
...
...Then i went to South Africa for 3 weeks and completely forgot about it
Next time i was here was to log on to the fourms, about half way into september. the day after i registered the forums got buged and had to regester again

Hey All
I didn't find this site in such a poetic way either.
I was bored at college one day and decided to take advantage of my only acess to a high speed internet connection. I was attacking the search engines to find information on a 747-400 that I was considering as my final, end of year project.
I came across the aircraft information part of the simviation site first, and almost immediatly dismissed it as I followed a link on the page to a different site.
When I was done with the other pages I looked for other links on the simviation page and was completley swallowed in by it, and I haven't really left since.
And thats how I discovered simviation.com
So thank you Pete for running up my phone bills and giving me square eyes from staring at VGA's all day long
j/k

P.S. I didn't continue with the 747, it's now a P-51D I'm making.

I discovered simviation way back in the late months of 98 when a member of a VA is was in at the time gave me the url. That night I probably stayed up to 2 a.m. downloading planes, learning new techniques, and checking out everything the site had to offer. Still to this day I have'nt used any other sites on the web for my flight sim downloads except for the rare occurence when the site does'nt have something I'm looking for.

1999 I think I found my second home here............Funny thing is, when I had a go of 98 after looking through the old download pages, I found i still had most of the planes and panels installed on my machine. Just wish I had found the forums earlier. Everyone (or most) are brilliant and I thank you for the early days of my FS world.

hehehe ... I hope you are joking - ...
'the strip' isn't on the web except on a folder at this site & if you found it through a search engine I'd be both astonished & puzzled. I've yet to know any search engine that is more than 6 months up to date on this site!!! I only put 'the strip' up a couple of weeks ago .....
'Google' for instance is way out of date in referencing this site.

If Pete started "The Strip" does that make him the original "Stripper" ... If his name were Jack, do we call him "Jack the Stripper" ???

I, for one, would like to see an expanded Early Simviation Site Archives section linked on the home page.

LOL!
I was doing a search for Flight Simulator Downloads on AOL Search and I found Simviation on the 3rd page (up to date as well!) and much later on there was thing called "The Strip", but the web adress was something like
www.simviation.com/thestrip/fsdownloads.htm
, so I entered and I found lots of FS98 downloads and was a bit shocked at that!

Somehow I got from the 1999 homepage in the earlier post above to a spiffy looking 2000 homepage. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone (the "zone between the zone between the zone...."
)
I couldn't reproduce that later, but a simple search for simviation.com at
www.archive.org
came up with a neat chart of 40 simviation homepages grouped by year. It included 3 from 1999 & 2 from
2000
--oops--I meant 2 from 2002. (I suppose most of you did this earlier when this topic was fresh, not to say that it's stale now
)
All those pages have a copyright by Simviation notice at the bottom. Now
www.archive.org
says
it
has them copyrighted ???. Not being a Philadelphia lawyer, I don't understand this. Can anybody tell me what's going on here ??? ?

Not that it really matters because we are going this way >>>>, not <<<<<, but it would be interesting to watch archive.org try to claim an infringement of copyright by a site/domain owner!
You simply cannot claim copyright on already copyrighted material.
Like I say - it's not an issue in simviation's case - but I can imagine archive.org is also claiming copyright on news sites' moments of history!! Or maybe it isn't......

I'm wondering why someone has mentioned this yet and why they have'nt been busted for copyright infringment long ago
. Oh I also found this little tidbit there about getting a page removed from their archive.

Somebody may have just done this (name possibly starting with a "P"
), because when I search there now for Simviation.com, it says it hasn't been archived.

It is a tribute to all the hard work Pete, Grumpy and others have put into this site. I had no idea what I was getting myself into after I purchased FS2k2 and found Simviation.com. I know I've been a pain in the side at times, but I certainly appreciate all the help! Grumpy you are extremely gracious and generous for all your responses and help you've provided for me and many, many others. I have learned so much about my computer, files, configurations, etc,. Just reading the forum responses. Thanks Tim.

Somebody may have just done this (name possibly starting with a "P" ), because when I search there now for Simviation.com, it says it hasn't been archived.
Not guilty..... why would I do that???
if this is true it's just yet another example of how some birdbrain (& there are plenty of them in every hobby including FS) see it fit to act against this site.

Now that you mention it, I guess it wouldn't make any sense to remove the pages from the archive site, since there's no possibility of a fight over copyrights. ??? I just mentioned it before because they seemed to disappear just as we were discussing it on this topic.
I see now they're back again; that is, when I go to
http://www.archive.org
and type in "simviation.com," I get a neat chart of Simviation web pages laid out by year. Maybe they never were gone and some kind of glitch kept me from finding them. (I double checked my spelling, etc., and couldn't find anything wrong. There is an "archive.com" site, but I'm sure I didn't go there.)
Anyway, I'm glad they're there--it's nice to be able to browse the old pages and see how the site developed

I don't use one, Bazza, but I
usually
read over my posts, so I'm sure you'll catch me in miss steaks from time to time
. Actually, I think I saw that one right after it was posted, and I thought to myself (who on earth else would I think to?), "Maybe I'm not really that anal-retentive, maybe I'll just let that one go like the big boys do." I see now that that was a mistake
.
It
seams
seems like a little trouble to me to type my posts into a word processor, spell-check 'em, then paste them into the forum reply screen, but maybe not. I'm thinking about giving it a try. Also I'm thinking about downloading Fozzer's "spellwrite" program.
Keep up the vigilance

Those graphics bring up so many flight hours logged.
I flew a majority out of Hawaii to the other islands. I had a King Air B200 which I flew the most for FS98/2000 (Which I can't use on FS2002 because of some third party BS) I had a Caravan and a few Citations. Memories, memories. Almost a hundered hours logged. I remember once, I was a Meigs with a Northwest Airlines 747-400 and managed to taxi to the very end of the runway and apply the revercers to back up to the very edge of the land and water where I applyed full brake and full thottle to initiate a snap roll and then I let her go and lowered full flaps and took off about 10 feet before I hit the water on the other side. CRAZY HUH?

man, I stepped onto this site from Yahoo!. I was bored With my fleet on 2002 and had heard of D/l aircraft. So I typed it inand Bam, first site up was simviation. I had hit this site right as you were changing from Ultraboard to YaBB. And since I have 250 Downloaded aircraft (half of them work, my fault) And havent stopped since. Then I got into these fourms, met people, had arguements, and found out who Pete was.
Thanks Pete for Brighening my FS life.
three cheers (again) for pete and Simviation

I'm afaid it may have only
seemed
to have been accurate.
In reality Google is pretty behind on it's updating & was constantly throwing up old outdated pages where the links weren't working. I was getting so many complaints as a result. ... in short it was a nightmare..... but of course if you want to irritate yourself you can add google to your toolbar & still 'search this site' (
) ... & just don't write to me about links not working from Google results.
Google is not a bad search engine in general but you'd be missing out on some of the best sites on the net if it is all you use.

I guess I could frase my finding of Simviation in a poetic manner but it would propbably bore you all stiff. Oh well, here it goes (if you can really call it poetic). I first found Simviation.com when I was browsing the net for something like "FS2000 downloads" in early 2000. I had previously that week or so found sites like Flightsim and Avsim and was going insane from not being able to work out how to download files succesfuly ( I knew nothing of Winzip). I stumbled across a link reading "Simviation.com" and clicked it. I was amazed at the quality of the site and it's graphics as soon as I saw the main menu. Thanks so much Pete for building Simviation.com and making the present under the Christmas tree so worth it.
I got started in the Forums probably a few days later and made lots of new friends and found out so much about the simming world. If I hadn't found Simviation I would have never made a good start on FS2000 and I now realize how much joy this site has brought me, and obviously many others. I have learned so much about my PC and had loads of fun along the way. It I hadn't made that search at this very moment I would probably be blowing up aliens this very moment on my PC.
No offence to you of course Pete but I think I prefered the Simviation look of 2000, not that I don't like it now.

1st - thanks for the comments.
I can't remember what the graphics were like in 2000 but we were at that time partnered by a Canadian group called Rydium who re-designed the site & were goi g to do a lot more. One problem was they made the pages far too heavy in terms of graphics - the main page alone was over 100K before input. With the dot com bust the whole thing became a nightmare, hosting especially & the finances were never paid either so eventually I broke with them.
The site design is fluid & always changing. It's not really my area but I do my best. I agree completely it could be improved a lot. The main thing I concentrate on is navigation which I try to make as easy as possible - without anything being too deep into the site & lightweight graphics to make pages easy to navigate.

Man, I forgot all about that eye-killing yellow entry page!
I remember the site back then, I started coming here in late '99 and visted pretty regularly for the next year or so. I was without a computer for a year and have just started getting back into flight sims over the last few months. I initially browsed in, started to get into building planes and such, then decided building is not where my interests lay. I must say, that looking back, the new Simviation is a much better looking page, more accesible, and much better forums.
Pete, keep up the excellent wotk!

Woohoo, took me a bit to find this post
Yeah, memories, although not as old as the site.
It was late '99 when I bought myself FS2000 for this new computer, my first actually, a PIII 450.
I was caught by the CD's advertisement that one could download literally thousands of planes off the internet.
Made my way to the MSFS site as provided on the box and found this link site there.
Of the many sites, I found Simviation the easiest to use and browse. it had loads of tutorials to get a beginner like me going.
Got myself CFS short after and learned apprechiating the most extensive CFS download area of this site, and again, the excellent tutos of a certain Doug Atrell.
Pete and Doug, time to give you both guys a big thumbs up and a warmest thank you.

I came in just after the ultraboard closing, around early 2002, and haven't skipped a beat since.

I came here fairly recently myself, but as far as modding FS, way back with '98 I got myself a copy of Abacus Flightdeck 1, and I just thought that was the coolest, at the time, I had no Idea that regular people could make planes for Flight sim. I kept on buying those Abacus CDs practically every time I went to Fry's. I found Simv, and all these other sites rather accidentally, one day I was just surfing GlobalSecurity.org ,yes you read right, and I followed a link to a site with a Downloadable Firefox, which linked to AVSIM, which I promptly got board with so I just googled FS addons and found Simv and that was only three years ago now, and now I can't stop!

How I found simV nobody want's to know I think.
But I'll still tell you:
I was looking for a good flight sim add-on site,
found a site that listed many many addon download sites, and also this one
I flew sim with FS'98 but later changed to FS2004, and in 2005 I noticed that FS can be expanded......
