Good afternoon all... Smiley

Time on my hands waiting for the old girl to get home from being saved at church again... Grin

A good Link and a couple of things you might like to read... Smiley

http://www.all-acronyms.com/tag/aviation

I am sure some of you here at Simviation have "AIDS"

AIDS...Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome
(not found in above Link)... Grin

Since there has been talk about old airliners and the radial engine on the forums here are a few lines to read... Smiley

Basically, a radial engine won't start if:
-the phase of the moon is wrong
-you look at it funny
-you or it is in a bad mood

If you have ever seen a radial engine start up, you know it is a miracle when two or three cylinders fire, and then you have to coax the rest to act in agreement that the engine should be in a state called "Started".

When a radial engine has been sitting a while oil collects in the bottom cylinders.
During the walk around you pull the engine "X" amount of blades to begin pulling the oil out of the bottom cylinders and back into the crankcase.
When you start it, you let the starter do the work, but for the same purpose.
On a R985, pulling a three bladed prop through nine blades before turning on the Mags allows all nine cylinders to go through all four strokes.
This way you minimize the chances of oil remaining in the bottom cylinders and the associated Hydraulic Lock.

Above info taken off the net... Grin

They are touchy creatures (radials), but they are amazing...so long as YOU are not the one paying for the engine!   Grin

It looks like radials were built inside out. No one was around back in the day to tell them pushrods go 'in' the engine not outside of the engine.. Imagine some debri hitting a pushrod and bending it. Yet some of those radials are still around.

Here is a copy, from Dougs link, of a pristine 985..

And look what that 985 is mounted to; one of Canada's 10 greatest technological inventions of the 20th Century, the DHC-2 Beaver.

Radials were meant to be serviced in the backcountry, in the jungle, in that hangar off in the corner of the airfield by that twenty year old kid just out of the Navy...

After a lifetime of "kicking" various British motorcycles fitted with Kick-starters (and 6 volt batteries) since 1950, all my Japanese Bikes since 1980 have been fitted with 12 volt batteries and push-button starters!

Getting back to Radials, I was watching an old episode of "Ice Pilots NWT" (compulsory viewing for all radial heads!) and one of their DC3's developed an oil leak in flight from engine number 2 which also started showing low oil pressure  and vibrations. The Pilot , Justin Symley I think, managed to continue to an alternate airfield where they found that an entire cylinder, or "Jug" as they are refered to had cracked completely around it's base.
It certainly says something about the ruggedness of radials that the thing was able to be kept running to allow for a safe landing. The engineers replaced the faulty cylinder with the engine in-situ and, after a brief test flight was able to fly to it's destination the following day.
Perhaps there's a lesson for Boeing in there somewhere?

Zaphod. Wink
