The captain thinks the ship can be saved. He delays the "abandon ship" order for over an hour after his engineers tell him it's hopeless and he needs to get everyone into lifeboats as soon as possible.
The engineers struggle to keep the dying ship afloat and supplied with electricity for as long as possible. None of the senior engineering crew survived.
