I have tried several map gauges but found none that met my needs.  The default FS9 map is fine except you must leave the cockpit to use it (why?  I don't know;  it's not a full screen map, on every system I've had it's a small map in the center of a black screen);  so something like this as a pop-up window would be fine.  It is oriented with north to the top;  hovering the cursor over ndbs, ILS feathers, etc. gives necessary information, it can be scrolled and zoomed.  The only thing I would add is a scale.  Is there such a gauge?

I just d/l'd that a few days ago, after hearing it was now freeware.  Haven't yet installed it (sounds like a good project for this afternoon).  Thanks.

Try this out:  http://www.blueskyscenery.com/

Go about 1/4 down the page and download the BSSMM - Moving Map by BlueSky Scenery.  You can also download the manual from there.  It's FREE and works quite well.  You can even display real-time weather.

Thanks.  I had actually grabbed that a couple of months back, then was told it only worked in the US so haven't tried it (though admittedly that would still cover about 50% of my flying).  I see what I'll be doing this weekend.

another really good moving map system (if you have internet on the computer that it is going to be used on) is "
Plan G
".   It is totally freeware, 4 different levels of "maps" that you fly over (basic map with road names/Satellite view/"hybrid" satellite with road names/ and Google Earth), shows you AI AIRCRAFT while in Single or Multiplayer mode.

You can even plot your Flight plan in it, and export to FS9/X and use the GPS and autopilot to fly the route.

as well as Create User Points of Intrest (like putting a pushpin on a map) so that you can come back to it later, or if you have several points, then you can base your flight plan off of the points that you have set up (Misty Moorings / Misty Fjords)
