If I download a flyable plane and don't like the way it handles, can I replace its 'model' file with one from another aircraft which I do like?

That would be a big mistake.  Sad  The model (MDL) file is the physical aircraft as you see it onscreen.  Roll Eyes

I think what you really mean is replacing the AIR file with one from another aircraft.   And, yes, you can do that...within reason.  All you really need to do is rename it properly....BUT that won't change the Description and Performance data within the file that is displayed in Freeflight, unless you edit that using AirEd.  Wink

CAUTIONS:   Tongue

You should select an AIR file from another version of the same aircraft, or one very similar to the one in question.  You really don't want to replace the AIR file in a P-40 with one from a B-17.

Be aware that the way the plane flies (whether you like it or not) may well be the way the actual plane handled.

Hope that helps.  Smiley

I think Boxkite meant the flight model TR.

Don't forget that the Aircraft.cfg entries take precedence over the AIR file.

I've done this a lot in the past but you need to know what you're doing.

Thanks, Hagar, for the headsup about the CFG file entries taking precedence.  I should have mentioned it.   Smiley

Many aircraft have very simple CFG files that you do not need to worry about, but increasingly (and particularly with the popular use of Air Wrench), CFG entries are being used to over-ride AIR file entries.  Smiley

You're welcome.

It's a long time since I messed around with CFS2 so I could be wrong about this. I think aircraft are listed on the CFS2 Aircraft selection menu under the Aircraft.cfg title= name rather than the AIR file entry. Simply swapping the flight dynamics with a similar type should not involve AIR file editing. Just remember to use the title= & [contact_points] entries from the original aircraft.

Thanks guys i'll psyche myself up to have a crack at it..Smiley
Reason I asked is because sometimes I download a plane (eg Fw190) which has good graphics but unrealistically jerky flight characteristics, so I look around and d/load another Fw.
Problem is, the new one might have excellent flight chars but not so hot in the graphics dept.
Hence my solution would be to combine the best graphics and the best flight chars into one plane.

That is correct, but I was referring to editing the Description and Performance text blocks of the AIR file, which appear in the individual aircraft window in Freeflight.  Wink

if you offer beer and chips. and ask nicely maybe tango can help you. i wouldnt play with them too much. sometimes one lil adjustment and you'll be do back flips everytime you pull up. (than again you would realy confuse the other pilot)

Tango and I played with the Commando to get it to takeoff better with some minor success on my part but it took Tango to get it to Fly as i couldnt get it. So pick your bird than see how she feels. if you think it needs adjustments than Give a shout out and let these guy know what its doing and what you want it to do.

Best advice i can give. if you have FS2002pro you can load the plane in the editor and modify the aircraft.CFG file. just remember to paste it into CFS2 after your done.

You're right of course. I've spent too much time with FS9 & FSX.
