Me too. I live around Saratoga, NY, which is the site of the nation'a oldest organized race course (not to mention it's the oldest organized sporting venue of any kind in the US). I also have the Saratoga Harness Track near by, so I'm surrounded.  Grin Grin Wouldn't have it any other way though. Smiley

Triple Crown is always fun to watch in the spring. The Breeder's Cup is coming up soon too; only two weeks away.

Watching to see if a bet comes in right now...

Just won a whopping $0.75 on a last minute show bet.  Grin Grin

Cool

Never really pay attention to the Aussie Tracks, although I have seen them while flipping to the OTB channel late a night.  Wink

Used to go to the horses every now & then years ago with a lady friend, it's kinda neat, never won anything tho.

Back in the 50's there was a major racetrack within walking distance of us, of course being underage, we couldn't go in, it's now a park, but the grandstand is still there.

Looking forward to the day when horse racing and rodeos are no longer permitted.

If the horse (or other 'farm animal')has to be put down, so should the jockey (or rider).

Race horses are well taken care of.  Take a close look, you'll see they're all in top shape, well fed, well groomed, and properly exercised.

It's pretty effortless for them to run a race, and they don't run more than one in any given day.

Don't know anything about rodeos, so can't comment.

Actually, racing does take a lot out of them, but they usually don't run in a race more than once every two weeks (thoroughbreds) or every week (standardbreds). This provides them with enough time to rest, train, and prepare for the next race. As with any sport, rare accidents do occur. However, you have to remember that with every horse there is a live person who is also risking their life. Both the horses and jockeys are incredible athletes who deserve respect for what they do.

Also, don't be fooled. These animals are extremely smart. If a horse really, really doesn't want to run, they won't, or they won't do it fast.  Grin I've seen it happen several times.  Grin

Lets try to keep politics and personal opinions out of it though.  Wink

The only thing I know about rodeos is that it's a challenge where men try to last more than 8 seconds.  Roll Eyes

Wink

Thanks for the input, B-Valvs, good to know.

We've had horses boarded around here in the past, the neighbor on the corner has a vacant backyard, they had two horses there for awhile, really nice animals, quiet, fenced in by a white horizontal type wood fence so you could easily see them.

Long ago, the people who lived straight across the street had a horse, not fenced in, it would sometimes wander into my front yard and munch on the grass.

And on rare occasions someone comes through riding a horse.

Cool, although I've never heard of horses being allowed to wonder where they please.  Cheesy Grin

I live in Saratoga, New York, so as soon as you get onto the backroads or out of town there are horse farms all over. It's a huge industry here, with a lot of history too.

That was about 1965ish, I think they've tightened up the ordinances by now.  It was kinda comical, tho, to see it practically at your front door quietly munching away.  Only happened maybe 2-3 times.  I would always tell them their horse got loose, they'd come and get it.  I think the neighbors got it for their kids.

Now that I think about it, a friend of mine had a mini-pony, or whatever they're called, for awhile a few years ago, but he lives pretty much in an area that accomodates that sort of thing.  Another really nice animal.
