Can a vehicle equipped with a paddle shifter still be driven in fully automatic mode, that is, without using the paddle shifter?

I've noticed that some V6 models have the paddle shifter as standard.  I drove a stick for 12 years, do not want to go back, even tho there's no clutch involved.

I've googled paddle shifters but results weren't too explanatory.

Why would I buy a car with a paddle shifter if I wasn't going to use it?  Because there are only certain models I'm looking at, I'm limiting my choices to V6 coupes, and some of those choices do not have a fully automatic option.

Most of the time yes. You'll need to post what cars your looking at though.
to be honest dont expect much from a paddle shift gearbox in anything lower than a bmw/merc level car. I've tried a couple, and they were dreadful. Also ask what type of gearbox they are using, if its a CVT the paddles are purely there for the driver to play with, they do very little.
I also found you have little control over the actual change times, and with your family affordable gearboxes, it can take a good second or two from you pulling the paddle to it actually thinking, yes I will change gear lol.

Thanks, Craig, that's very helpful.  I'm only looking online right now, auto show's coming up soon (Miami), I'll go and check things out.  Specifically, online looks have been Honda Accord & Hyundai Genesis, I'll keep looking, like I said, it's gotta be a V6 coupe, and in an affordable range, can't do high level's.  I'll ask at the auto show and compare notes, ya never know what the sales people know or just want to tell you.  The whole point is to avoid any distractions and just drive on full automatic.

Right now my 2002 Alero V6 coupe 21,000 miles is showroom condition, and new rack & pinion really solidified the steering feel, it's really going great, so I can wait and wait, which is prob what I'm gonna do, but it's always good to research things.

Honda's usually in this country have a fully auto option with their paddle shifts. you also get the rally style push pull gear stick change.

Most have a switch that changes it between automatic and select shift.
