Mom's pc got a nasty repeating BSOD when I restarted directly after installing Norton...  I fixed it by booting into safe mode, can you try that?

Asus G71GX-RX05 from BestBuy.     2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 (Very easily overclocked by 15%, 25% for xtreme live-or-die sessions),
6GB of 800MHz DDR2 RAM       1GB GDDR3 Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M     500GB 5400 RPM SATA-150 HDD, w/ 2nd drive bay.  All for only $1300!

THIS IS AWESOME!!!

Safe mode almost always works for everything.  This includes mostly BSODs, but can also apply to things inside windows.  If it works during safe mode, it almost always it something external such as a virus, an incompatible program,  a bad overclock, etc.  Just a thought, check ventilation on your PC.  Sometimes Windows can crash because it is getting too hot, which would fit the pattern of it working most of the time, and then crashing.  This is especially true if it crashes while playing a demanding game.
